The North Face Mica FL 1 is a double-wall tent with excellent ventilation, lots of headroom, plenty of gear storage, and excellent weatherproofing to boot. When it comes to one-person tents, you couldn’t do much worse than the North Face Mica FL 1. It’s straightforward to put up, and the huge entry door makes it easy to go in and out — there really isn’t much to complain about with this one. Perhaps a touch on the expensive side, but you get what you pay for.
5 REI Quarter Dome SL 1 Tent
The REI Quarter Dome SL 1 is a good quality double wall tent with lots of head and shoulder room. It is the second lightest tent on this list and is the joint lightest on this list. Installation is simplified by the use of a color labeled pole assembly and stake placement is straightforward. The mesh and ceiling vent configuration provide good ventilation and help to prevent condensation, while the large number of pockets and hang loops provide lots of storage options. This tent comes highly recommended as a cost-effective and high-quality alternative.
6 ALPS Mountaineering Lynx Solo
The ALPS Mountaineering Lynx is by far the heaviest tent on our list, but what it lacks in weight it more than makes up for in setup simplicity, which is incredibly quick and straightforward. It’s also fairly reasonably priced when compared to the majority of the tents on our list. In addition to its many amenities, this free-standing solo tent offers excellent ventilation as well as a spacious vestibule that can be utilized for additional storage. It’s an excellent alternative for individuals who do not want to break the bank but also do not want to sacrifice quality for a lower price.
It’s true that this cheap tunnel 1-man tent isn’t anywhere like as high-quality as the other tents on our list, but it does have a lot going for it when you consider the price.
Surprise, surprise, it has a few problems, such as a difficult entrance and leave owing to the tunnel’s construction, as well as limited space to sit up.

The Lightweight Shelter Debate: Tents, Hammocks and Bivy Sacks
We’ll start with the bad news: we’re not going to declare one shelter style to be the absolute greatest option for ultralight backpacking. In this case, there are just too many variables at play. What we can do is take an impartial look at the statistics above, and we can see that trekking pole-supported shelters are the clear winners, with a variety of alternatives available for less than a pound each (not including your trekking poles). The following is the sequence of the items: bivy bags, conventional tents with poles, and hammocks.
- Most people will not stray away from the traditionalbackpacking tent, and with a variety of choices weighing less than 2 pounds, it is not a significant sacrifice.
- In the event that you already backpack with trekking poles, investing in a tent that is supported by those handy sticks is a terrific method to reduce weight.
- Despite the fact that bivy bags and hammocks are at polar different ends of the comfort spectrum, each have a tiny but devoted following of aficionados.

Trekking Pole-Supported Shelters
Trekking pole-supported shelters, as our overall lightweight champions, have earned a more in-depth explanation in this section. As the name implies, your trekking poles will be used to construct the structure in place of the traditional tent poles. In the end, the shelters are robust, just as competent in inclement weather as a normal tent, and surprisingly large considering their light weight. These tents, on the other hand, are not for everyone. To begin with, not all hikers use trekking poles when hiking.
However, with enough skill in putting them up and familiarity with the process of selecting a good campground, the procedure can become quite seamless fairly fast.
Packed Weight vs. Trail Weight
When looking for tents, you’ll frequently come across two weight specifications: packed weight and trail weight. When it comes to weight, packed weight is the heavier of the two options. It contains everything that is supplied directly from the manufacturer, such as the tent body and rainfly, as well as the poles, stakes, guylines, instructions, and bags. Trail weight is the most impressive, but it just consists of the bare essentials: the tent body, rainfly, and trekking poles. The reality is that the actual weight you’ll be carrying about will most likely be somewhere in the middle of the two options.
Stakes, which are a vital element of setting up a tent, are not included in the trail weight, and most people do not opt to forego the use of guylines and a tent bag.

Packed Size
A cursory glance at the data above indicates the obvious: packed size and weight are inversely proportional. Weight-saving and compressible materials, such as lighter and thinner materials, allow these one-person shelters to readily fit into any size camping pack. Having said that, the packed size is only useful to a limited extent because we rarely store our tents as a whole unit. Instead, we choose to tie the tent poles to the exterior of our bag, which allows us to put even more gear into the main compartment of our backpack.
Ultralight Fabrics: Nylon, Silnylon and Dyneema (Cuben Fiber)
The fabric used for the shelter’s body is the single most important factor in weight reduction. Ripstop nylon has long been the industry standard because it is inexpensive and can be made waterproof by applying a polyurethane coating and sealing the seams. The bad drawback is that it is not very long-lasting. As the fabric becomes thinner (measured in denier), it has a greater potential to pierce and tear than other fabric alternatives, which makes it less durable. Many small-time cottage industry businesses turn to silnylon, which is ripstop nylon that has been infused with liquid silicon.
Until the introduction of Dyneema, silnylon was widely regarded as the ultralightweight gold standard (formerly Cuben Fiber).
It should come as no surprise that the lightest shelters on our list, including those from Big Sky, Zpacks, Six Moon Designs, and Mountain Laurel Designs, are made of Dyneema and Dyneema Composite materials.
Fabric Thickness
Because of the widespread industry-wide concern with lightweight materials, many of them have grown so thin that they are actually see-through in places. Despite the fact that the various materials are remarkably strong for their weight, durability is necessarily compromised as a result of their thinness. It is critical to maintain some tear resistance, or thickness, in the floor material since this is the area that is most susceptible to punctures and wear and tear over time. Every shelter model’s floor thickness has been listed in the charts above when the information has been made available to us by the manufacturer.
A denier value is assigned to standard nylons, with a lower denier rating indicating that the material is thinner and flimsier than a higher denier grade.
As we discussed in the preceding section, silnylon and Dyneema materials offer greater weight-to-strength ratios than normal nylon, allowing you to use a thinner fabric while making less sacrifices in performance.
When measured in ounces per square yard, Dyneema fibers are as mind-blowingly light as.51 ounces per square yard, while silnylon fibers are approximately twice as heavy as Dyneema fibers, at 1.1 ounces per square yard, which is still a remarkable feat.
Interior Space
One-person shelters are designed only for the purpose of accommodating a single person. You shouldn’t expect to be able to keep a pack of cards or host a game of cards with a friend inside. As a result, internal room is unquestionably limited in virtually every model included in the table above. Bivy sacks are the ultimate manifestation of a snug fit, and they provide approximately the same amount of space as a big sleeping bag—as previously said, they are not for the claustrophobic. The inner capacity of a tent might vary, but glancing at the floor area can give you a decent estimate of how much room is available.
It is usually advisable to examine the form of the tent in order to acquire a more accurate impression of the genuine internal volume.
