Visit one of our five favorite camping gear stores to ensure that your packs, sleeping bags, and boots are in excellent condition. Jessica Allen is the author of this piece. In addition to claiming to be the largest outfitter in Brooklyn, Gear to Go Outfitters claims to be the only full-service outfitter in the entire city of New York.

This past Sunday, a buddy and I went to Collective Governors Island for a relaxing night.

The tents are stunning, and it’s certainly a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be camping and toasting s’mores over a campfire with the New York City skyline and Lady Liberty as a backdrop in the distance.

I’m looking forward to returning there next year!

When you join up for Outside+ today, you’ll receive a $50 discount off an eligible $100 purchase at the Outside Shop, where you’ll discover a variety of brand-name goods handpicked by our gear editors. Perhaps you’re looking for a way to explore New York on a budget. Alternatively, perhaps the seemingly incongruous concept of camping in the midst of a roiling, spewing metropolis is exactly up your alley. Whatever it is that inspires your urban cowboy fancies, you’ll be pleased to hear that it is, in fact, feasible to sleep beneath the stars in New York City (and you don’t even have to be a resident of Wall Street to do this).

  1. These campouts are free, and they include food as well as a guided night hike conducted by a park ranger.
  2. However, you may try your luck by signing up for the next event, which will be held at Van Cortland Park in the Bronx and will focus on wilderness survival (April 19).
  3. According to Daphne Yun, a public affairs expert with the Gateway National Recreation Area, camping in Gateway is a “wonderful experience.” “Each of our locations has its own set of advantages.” Those who cherish their privacy could consider staying at Sandy Hook, according to Yun.
  4. Yun recommends one of the three campsites at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island, which offers views of Coney Island and Brooklyn.
  5. The Fort’s second outstanding feature, according to Yun, is its close proximity to the overlook beneath the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, from where you can enjoy “a fantastic view of New York Harbor and Manhattan,” as Yun promises.
  6. The former municipal airport, which was the city’s first, has been transformed into a park that is within driving distance of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, a haven for birdwatchers and other wildlife.

The others are normally accessible from May 1 through September. All GNRA sites are $20 per day for a maximum of 14 days, which gives you plenty of time to explore a truly wild side of New York City without breaking the bank.

Why Buy That Expensive Tent When You Can Rent? (Published 2019)

Tent camping should be one of the most affordable modes of transportation, provided that only a minimal campground and park entry price is charged. However, unless you can borrow equipment, bringing your own bedroll and shelter might be prohibitively expensive. If your location necessitates a trek, make sure to include a backpack in your luggage count. According to the most recent statistics from the Outdoor Industry Association, 41.8 million Americans went camping at least once in 2017, with adults spending an average of $546 on camping gear in 2016.

  • Several outdoor retailers around the country, like Denver-basedOutdoors Geek (which also distributes gear) and REI, rent camping equipment in an effort to alleviate campers’ investment dilemma.
  • It streamlines the rental and distribution of outdoor gear, which includes anything from trekking poles, torches, and bear-safe food canisters to tents, hammocks, and backpacks.
  • “We didn’t have a location to keep our equipment, and we had no interest in buying all of our equipment and paying thousands of dollars to purchase it,” Ms.
  • Arrive collaborates with major outdoor businesses like as Marmot and Deuter to implement a sustainable approach that involves lowering purchases and repurposing equipment.
  • Mr.
  • Richmond describes Arrive’s consumers as “dabblers” rather than “extremists.” Over the course of one to three days, Arrive offers late-model goods in excellent condition starting at a discount of 15 percent off retail pricing (the service rents gear up to 21 days).

Planning ahead

I went online in July to acquire gear for a hiking trip in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which I planned to do in early August (Arrive accepts orders between one year and one week before use). For my three-day excursion, I went for the camping kit for two, which cost $243 and included a two-person tent, two backpacks, two sleeping bags, two sleeping mats, a stove, cooking pans, and two headlamps, among other essentials. These goods are also accessible on an as-needed basis.

The retail value, according to Arrive, is $1,618.

The firm will send to any FedEx location that enables delivery, which makes the service useful for visitors who are travelling to remote areas such as national parks and wilderness areas (Arrive ships to every state except Alaska and Hawaii).

When I chose a FedEx facility that didn’t have any available space for packages, the company provided a handy option. I received an email verifying that my package had arrived on the Tuesday before my scheduled pickup on Friday, which gave me piece of mind.

Getting the gear

The excitement of opening the 30-by-24-by-12-inch package on Christmas morning was palpable. Everything I had bought arrived in perfect shape, appeared to be brand new, and was far more contemporary than the older, heavier camping gear I had owned. I was very pleased with everything I received. This trial required the participation of my husband, who is an avid camper and backcountry MacGyver in case I needed his improvisational skills. He was, however, instructed to step back and allow the average consumer, who is not particularly technically incline, to figure out how to operate unfamiliar equipment.

Having loaded the gear and food into the Deuter 60 + 10 L backpacks, we made our way to Walmart, where we stopped to resupply with petrol before continuing on to the trailhead.

Field-testing

An interior panel on Deuter backpacks features pictographs of emergency arm signals, which I may use to flag down a passing plane if required, according to the manufacturer. However, I was unable to locate any instructions for altering the height of my pack, which had been top-heavy from the beginning. If I hadn’t been the kind to hang out at REI, I wouldn’t have known how to tighten a Velcro strap that allowed me to shrink the entire pack to my preferred size. Arrive claims to provide a customer care line that can assist consumers with their questions.

Prior to reaching our wilderness camping spot behind the sandstone cliffs that surround the Caribbean-blue Lake Superior, we trekked nine kilometres with our packs comfy but our legs less so.

The MSR Hubba Hubba NX tent with a rainfly, in contrast to the backpacks, came with an assembly diagram printed on the storage sack.

The stove featured a universal connection, which allowed us to quickly screw on the Coleman butane/propane fuel we purchased for $6.

The sun fell in a fiery orange ball into the lake, a spectacular finale that brought all five groups of backcountry campers to the beach, and we used our super-bright Black Diamond Spot Headlamps to navigate our way back to our tent in the pitch black (the newest and most compact in the neighborhood).

Despite the fact that it was an indulgence, the Therm-a-Rest ProLite Apex Backpacking Sleeping Pad weighed little over a pound in the pack and inflated to two strong inches between the ground and the sleeping bag, it felt like an indulgence.

Returning to civilization

It took only a few minutes to set up camp and put the pads and sleeping bags back into their respective pouches, which could be reduced with a tug on the adjustable outside straps. As we were leaving the campground, we quickly repacked the box that the cargo had arrived in and returned it using the FedEx label that had been supplied (the cost was included in the shipping fee). I was concerned that my pack smelled like coffee after the grounds from the trash bag I was carrying seeped into it, but Arrive made no notice of it (there are fees for late or significantly damaged items).

Common sense and a packing list will go a long way towards achieving this (REI has acamping checklistand one forbackpacking).

However, for those who camp just seldom or perhaps for the first time, Arrive provides a cost-effective option that is made more delightful by the use of lightweight, contemporary equipment.
