DIY Outdoor Canopy

A simple Pinterest picture inspired a “Suntracking Shelter” that could be moved along metal arches as the sun moved across the sky. It was the beginning of a long and arduous journey. I felt it would be perfect for the sandbox because it receives direct sunlight all day and because the sun is at an angle, standard “flat” canopies are ineffective due to the angle of sunlight. When the teacher saw the Pin, she commented, “We can manufacture that ourselves; it appears to be rather simple.” That was the case.

  1. Due to the fact that we did not have any instructions, we had to figure things out as we went along.
  2. We discussed the advantages and disadvantages of metal electrical conduit against plastic PVC pipe, and then we disputed the advantages and disadvantages of an arch versus a square design.
  3. In addition, we purchased connections.
  4. However, the flexible tubing was slightly larger than necessary, so Teacher intended to sand the excess away using his Dremel tool.
  5. We went to our local fabric store and looked through the outdoor fabric area until we found one we liked.
  6. The cloth canopy itself was quite simple to construct — the most difficult element was ensuring that my proportions were accurate!
  7. Yes, it is an outside canopy, but I wanted it to be attractive as well.

Afterwards, I measured and marked four feet each direction from the middle of the cloth, resulting in two lines that were eight feet apart.

I stitched a second line over the first to give it more strength.

Meanwhile, Teacher was putting the finishing touches on the most difficult aspect of the project — the arches.

They were just stunning!

Then I wrapped the cloth around the balloon, and it burst because the weight of the fabric bent the bendable toward the center of the sandbox.

The PVC pipe proposal was abandoned, and the outside conduit was constructed using electrical conduit, as originally proposed by Teacher.

As a matter of fact, he did.

My foot was on the pail to keep it from blowing away as he tugged on the conduit, bending it to form an arch with the curvature of the pail as support.

My husband is a complete genius!

In order to compare the two materials, we lay the conduit over the PVC at regular intervals and made changes as needed.

We attempted the arches in the sandbox and ended up bursting another balloon since they were too short for the children to stand up in the sandbox.

We purchased a ten-foot piece of conduit as well as compression connections.

It’s a piece of cake!

It was just great!

I couldn’t wait to see it finished in its entirety!

It is recommended that the legs be removed for the winter, but in the interim we may push the cloth canopy all the way down to ground level when there is a lot of wind.
