On its own, nylon is extremely resistant to practically everything (with the exception of DEET), and it will withstand hot-water washings, a lot of detergent, and hot dryers with ease.

Rod Unless I’m missing something, but if your tent, fly, or anything else has decaying, delaminating PU and you remove the coating in order to reapply more.

If you use a substandard PU type product, the problem will recur and most likely in the near future (i.e., the coating will not last nearly as long as the manufacturer applied the prior coating, which will be sooner rather than later).

It is also easier, faster, and more efficient to re-coat when properly applied and blended.

To attempt and wash the remainder off in order to reapply more would be pointless and time-consuming.

I had no idea this was even a possibility.

There hasn’t been any cracking or peeling yet, but it’s definitely on its way.

However, it appears that the sticky problem occurs when the two coated surfaces are stored in close proximity to one another.

The two Sierra Design tents I have are both from the 1970s and the ’80s — one of the original Flashlights from the ’70s and a ’80s Super Flash — both are in excellent condition and were purchased prior to the Chouinard.

Could I use the Permatex Flowable Silicone for this purpose, or would it still require diluting?

Is there a particular reason you stayed with PU rather than switching to silicone?

According to my research, and I’m not an expert, PU fabrics have a coating on the inside of the material that protects it.

It appears to me that the waterproofing saturates the material on a microscopic level in both instances, which is especially true given that nylon is hygroscopic.

I was skeptical because silicone doesn’t adhere well to polyurethane.

Is what I’m saying correct or incorrect?

It just seemed more logical to go with the PU.

It has the consistency of milk and is much easier to work with than the silicone/mineral spirits concoctions that I have previously used.

Years ago, I used a product called Kenyon recoat 3 to recoat a tent that I had purchased.

I followed the directions exactly, and it worked well and looked great after it was finished drying.

If Nick or anyone else has had that experience when recoating a tent, I’d be interested in hearing about it.

It is a water-based product.

It’s possible that it will wash off after that.

The material is no longer a viable option for outdoor usage and has been replaced with ‘TPU,’ which is a completely new material that is as effective.

Time Estimated: Approximately 30 minutes 15 to 30 minutes for application Cure time is 8-12 hours. Steps:

  1. Using a dry brush and isopropyl alcohol, remove the old, damaged PU coating from the surface. Alternatively, you may soak the tent in a solution of water, Revivex Pro Cleaner or mild detergent, and an isopropyl alcohol combination to remove the previous PU covering. Following cleaning and drying the area, shake Seam Grip TF and push the sponge down while pinching to saturate the applicator with product. Apply a thin, uniform coat of paint to the fabric of the tent’s inside. It is recommended to use a single coat. After four hours, check the tent for dryness and wait 24 hours before storing it away.

When the factory PU coating starts to peel and flake off, it’s time to replace it, according to our experts. It may also grow sticky or emit a terrible stench as time passes.
