Jayco camping trailers, which first appeared on the market in 1968, raise and drop their roofs with the use of a winch and a complex system of cables, pulleys, driving slugs, flexible push rod springs, and telescoping posts. It may be necessary to replace the cable swage sleeves with new ones if the cable was crimped rather than secured in place. Using pliers or vise-grips, firmly clamp them in place.

Step 4

Lifter cables that exhibit symptoms of fraying, breaking, corrosion, or other damage should be replaced immediately. The Jayco’s four lifter cables are attached to the harness block with eye bolts and are routed to the drive slugs through pulleys to complete the lifter cable system. Whenever the winch pulls in the main cable, the lifter cables are pulled down a track that is fastened to the floorboard, pulling the driving slugs. As the roof is raised, the flexible rod springs are pushed through the track and into the telescoping support posts by the driving slugs.

If the bolts are damaged, they should be replaced.

Follow the wires as they travel beneath the seats and cabinets, and look for signs of damage along the way.

Step 5

Before changing the camper’s lifter cables, make a note of how they are routed. Remove the screw that is located on the inside side of the track. Remove the rod spring and drive the slug all the way through the end of the track to the other side. Disconnect the cable from the driving slug and remove the other end of the cable from the eye bolt at the harness square, then repeat the process.

Remove the eye bolt nut and the lock nut to make room for future adjustment of the nut. Calculate the length of the cable and replace it with a new one of the same diameter. The majority of lifter cables are 3/32 inch in diameter.

Step 6

Thread the new lifter cable for the camper through a new swage sleeve on the camper’s frame. It should be looped through the eye bolt and back through the opposite side of the sleeve to secure it. Do not crimp at this time. Connect the other end of the cable to the drive slug by routing it through the floor track and crimping it in place. Install the rod spring and inward-facing screw on the rod end. Pull the cable taut from the square side of the harness and crimp it in place. Increase or decrease cable tension by tightening the eye bolt, which is then secured in place with the lock nut.

Step 7

Slide the bunks back into the trailer and test the cable installation by raising and lowering the roof four or five times with the winch to ensure that it is secure. Take measurements on all four sides of the camper while its roof is elevated and its door is closed to confirm that each corner is within 1/2 inch of the others. Adjust the height of the corners by tightening or loosening the eye bolts that go through the harness square.

Whelp, here’s the first day’s report from the field. After looking for answers on the internet, which was somewhat helpful but still left me unclear of where to begin, I decided to get my hands filthy and start digging. The first step was to raise the top of the car with a dead corner. As soon as I pulled into my parking spot beneath a large tree, I hooked up my come-a-long and cranked and racheted it until it was fully deployed, then I set up my trailer and turned on the air compressor (cuz it hot in Texas.) In the following step, I took measurements and cut 1 X 4s to be used as supports near the extension poles (they were about 47.5 inches long) As a result, I dismantled a step near the sink and queen-sized bed in order to obtain access to the cable system near the winch.

  • After a little digging, I discovered that one of the four 1/4-20 eye hooks had virtually straightened out and the wire had slid off.
  • I reattached the cable end and then cranked it back up to a near-tight position again.
  • Basically, after about 6-8 repetitions of cranking down, modifying the eyebolt lengths by adjusting the nuts, then cranking back up, I eventually got the tensioning relatively near to what I was looking for, I believe.

There is no connection between the spring and the roof; rather, it merely pushes up on the post to raise it.

Even after significant coaxing, the door won’t close from 4″ to 2″.

What I believe is happening is that your eye bolts are being extended too far outward from the block, (the square piece of metal connected to the main cable to which all the lift cables connect with eye bolts), and they are hitting the pulley on the opposite side of the crank before the top reaches its final destination.

  • According to my assumptions, closing your top might be possible if the eye bolts were moved further inside.
  • As a result, the only method to resolve the situation is to modify the length of the wires.
  • Because a Jayco has no solid stop, pushing the eye bolts in will result in the top wanting to elevate even farther.
  • In such situation, you’d need to test how far you could push the eye bolts outward before proceeding.
  • The length of the cable is crucial on the Jayco because of the weight of the boat.
  • It turns out that my cables are still in good condition, at least for the time being.

Hey everyone. We bought a ’92 Jayco Designer Series, King 6 I think it is. Very well used but not beat up. Haven’t taken it out yet but just now went to open it up again and I heard something pop then noticed the left rear corner of the top wasn’t going up. Must be a cable has snapped I guess. Anyone here have any experience replacing these? How in the world do you get in there to them? Someone elsewhere mentioned they thought Jayco’s had a lifetime warranty on the lift system. Is this true? Thanks.

I might know the answer to this one.This happens sometimes on our ’06.There are four lifter cables, one from each corner.They come together at a square plate attached to the cable on the winch (lifter).Each corner lift cable has an eyebolt that holds it to the plate. If one eyebolt comes undone, that corner doesn’t go up and that’s happened to us.In order to fix it you need to open up the covers over the lifter mechanism at the back end of the trailer.On ours this is all done on the inside of the trailer.First crank up the trailer so that you can get in and work at the back end. Prop up the broken corner with something.Then you’ll need to open thedinette seats (or maybe the locker depending on your layout).At the very backend of the trailer, inside the dinette seats should be two plywood covers.You’ll have to work out where the screws are and open up these plywood covers.Once they’re both open you should see the winch at one side and four cables (three taut and one slack and useless looking).If you peer under the unexposed part of the cables, you’ll see the square plate and the eyebolts.The nut usually ends up on the left hand side of our trailer.Get the nut and adjust the height of the trailer so you can reach the plates.Prop the broken end up higher than the other corners, this’ll put slack into that cable and make it easier to fasten the nut on the eyebolt.Then just put the eyebolt back in the square plate and tighten it up really good.Locktite wouldn’t go amiss. If it’s actually a cable, you can probably replace it with aircraft cable from a good hardware store.Stainless might be a nice upgrade. You shouldn’t need any special parts.Finally, a word of advice, check the other eyebolts while you’ve got it open.Don’t just close it up cause it’s dark and you’re hungry and tired and it’s been a long drive. You’ll regret it when you get to the next campsite and one of the other corners doesn’t work.WHile you’re in there you can also adjust the eyebolts if the roof doesn’t end up with the same lift at each corner or if you want the roof to have a bit of a lean so rain runs off.Hope this helps.

When I bought my Jayco the dealer did tell me that the lifter system has a Lifetime Warrenty to the Original Owner.

I check the bottom pulleys every year and have replaced most of their bearings.Our old Coleman has cables exposed to dust and mud, so the bearings get very dirty and dry.I made some covers out of tin, duct tape and a drinking straw over the cable leading into the pulley.

To prevent fabric from catching on the telescoping tubes that raise and stabilize the roof, construct a wide cardboard cover to fit between the tube and fabric before coating them.

After using the silicone spray, let 10 to 15 minutes to pass before gently wiping away any excess silicone from the tubes.

I plan on doing this project within the next two weeks. The directions I received do not appear that hard. So I guessing 1 cable cannot be more than 15 dollars and probably 1 hour time. I can post the directions for a Starcraft put do not know how different they are for your PU. Anyway, brought it to the dealer and it was repaired with new cable for less than $50 parts and labor. (this does not include the 4 smaller cables that go up the roof support posts). I replaced the main cable in our 1997 Jayco 1207KB when I noticed the first few wraps on the pulley were looking pretty bad. The labor is what makes the $50.00 price seem so reasonable, because the materials were pretty cheap, about $3.00 for the cable, and about $2.00 for the swaged sleeve. The tricky part was finding the swage tool to install the sleeve. Junior MemberJoin Date: May 2003Location: Ontario, CanadaPosts: 1 We bought a fix-er-upper off Ebay and the lift cables were shot. It would not even raise when we got there to pick it up. We towed it home and when we finally got it raised with 2 x 4’s we discovered the interior was all just renovated quite nicely so it was worth our while repair the lift cables. My dad did it. He’s an auto mechanic by trade so is quite handy with these things. He did need a special tool which he borrowed from the guy who sold him all the cables and materials. It took the better part of a day to make up all four cables and the main one. It was much cheaper than getting done at a shop, though. (And I still didn’t have to get all messy and dirty!)

I purchased a crimper (swaging tool) for $25 and the parts were around $4 from local hardware. I was told around $350.My husband was so ticked that it would cost that much. We went out and purchased a 1992 Scotty TT for $1,700 since we were getting tired of the pop-up thing anyway.Now we need to decide on what to do with the pop-up. I just can’t believe they wanted that much.
