# How To Make A Geodesic Dome Tent

## New Geodesic Dome Calculator and DIY Dome Plans — ByExample.com

We created our own geodesic dome tent last spring, complete with a dome cover, ventilation system, and rain fly that we made from scratch. Construction blueprints, geodesic dome cover designs, and our preferred dome assembly method have all been made available on our website. A geodesic dome calculator has also been developed using geodesic dome formulae to assist those of you who are intending to construct your own dome.

### Geodesic Dome Calculator

Dome Formula Calculator Made at Home In accordance with the given radius, our geodesic dome calculator will calculate the length and number of struts for 2V, 3V, and 4V geodesic domes, respectively. It simplifies the process of calculating geodesic dome formulae by automating the process.

### Dome Plans and Patterns

Design and construction drawings of a geodeic dome are included. This page is based on our personal dome construction effort, and it includes geodesic dome blueprints, dome cover patterns, and a calculator to make geodesic dome calculations easier to understand and remember. There includes information on how to build your own geodesic dome tent, as well as information about geodesic constructions and opinions on living in a dome house. Our Homemade Geodesic Dome Cover was a success! In addition, we developed and built our own form-fitting geodesic dome cover from scratch.

Patterns for constructing a geodesic dome cover are provided.

Our bespoke dome cover design includes a ventilation system as well as a rain fly to keep you cool in the summer.

Following extensive testing, we have determined that this approach is the most effective means of assembling geodesic domes.

### Geodesic Dome Comparison

The Difference Between Geodesic Domes of 2V, 3V, and 4V Dimensions Building our geodesic dome tent required the application of mathematics to construct a 2V geodesic dome, which we achieved through the use of dome formulas. The differences between 2V, 3V, and 4V geodesic domes are illustrated in the following figures.

### Dome Construction Photos

Images of the Construction of a Geodesic Dome We constructed our geodesic dome frame within the confines of our little trailer. These are photographs taken during the construction of the dome. Geodesic Dome Cover Illustrations Creating the cover for our geodesic dome proved to be a little more difficult, and we required a wider room to lay out the tarps. We cut the tarps in a nearby community center, which is where some of these photographs were taken as well.

### Benefits of Having a Geodesic Dome Tent

Geodesic dome tents give good protection from the elements, especially the wind and sun. If you want to spend any time camping in the desert, you might want to think about building your own geodesic dome. Steel EMT dome constructions are naturally sturdy and can support a substantial amount of weight, especially if they are constructed of steel (electrical metallic tubing). In reality, geodesic domes are usually found on playgrounds, where they are used as jungle gyms. Not only is the solidity of the dome structure appealing, but the design and pattern of the structure are also distinctive.

I have used it as a jam place, meditation zone, outdoor workshop, and extra storage room.

We also had a booth in the dome at our lastarts and crafts festival where we sold our wares.

In the future, we will be experimenting with a variety of various DIY dome coverings, as well as more sophisticated and larger dome structures. Overall, this project was not prohibitively expensive, especially when one considers the numerous applications for which our dome has been designed.

## How to Build Geodesic Dome Tent – Geodome Tent Installation

Increasingly, event planners are enthusiastic about the prospect of using a geodesic dome as a site for a commercial or wedding event. Exhibits, pop-up shops, wedding banquet halls, branding, new product launches, temporary classrooms, and ice rinks are just a few examples. Geodome tents will generate eye-catching structures to attract people because of their distinctive look, which is similar to that of a shell. Geodesic domes are simple to construct from the ground up if you have the necessary materials and are prepared to follow the directions supplied by the manufacturer.

## How to Build Geodesic Dome Tent STEP BY STEP

1. Open the packaging, which contains the main profile, steel connection, fixation kit, and PVC membrane cover. 2. Remove the main profile from the package. You’d be better off categorizing them based on the model number that they have. Of course, if you purchase a geodesic dome from Shelter, we will give you the categorized package with no additional charge. You must draw a circular mark of the desired size of the geodesic dome according to the size of the dome. In addition, you must determine the direction in which the door will open.

1. Begin constructing the profile tube by starting at the entrance.
2. Follow the instruction by clicking on the icon that represents it and selecting the appropriate pipe.
3. 5.
4. After that, knot the corner with a rope.
5. This phase will, of course, be completed by one or two guys if you are constructing a modest geodesic dome tent (diameter 3 – 10m).
6. 6.
7. The installation of the geodesic dome is completed at that point.
8. Suppose you are building up a geodesic dome of 4m diameter (backyard dome or garden dome), you can accomplish the job in 4 hours by yourself.
9. There is no need to be concerned about the installation; simply admire these magnificent constructions.

## Build a PVC 20-Foot Functional Geodesic Dome

Using only 150 pieces of PVC pipe and a weekend, you can erect a low-cost, sturdily constructed building. Our fascination with the thought of creating our own shelter is piqued, but where does one begin for the typical handyman? Construction of a geodesic dome out of PVC may be the most cost-effective means of constructing a structurally sound but transportable shelter, and it is feasible to construct one in a single day. At the 2014 Maker Faire in New York City, the Sketchup team demonstrated just that.

We wanted something that was simple and enjoyable to put together, but it also needed to be visually striking while remaining easily replicable by anybody with only a few basic tools.

Let us walk you through the process of building ours, as well as how you can use Sketchup to simply design and create your own, no matter what size you need. You can view our Maker Faire domes in action here, and you can also see a video of them in action below.

### The History of the Geodesic Dome

We should start by stating that our team did not develop geodomes; rather, Buckminster “Bucky” Fuller was the one to accomplish it. Please allow the Bucky Fuller Institute to provide you with some background information about him. R. Buckminster Fuller was born on July 12, 1895, in Milton, Massachusetts, and became a well-known inventor and visionary of the twentieth century. Fuller dedicated his life to making the world a better place for all of mankind. He functioned as a practical philosopher, demonstrating his beliefs through creations that he referred to as “artifacts” to show his point.

Fuller’s work was recognized as groundbreaking.

He also wrote 28 books and possessed 28 patents.

### The Different Types of Geodesic Domes

Geodesic domes can be either complex or quite basic in their construction. “Tessellations” refer to the varied levels of intricacy present in the work. The greater the number of tessellations in your dome, the smoother your dome will be. Dome voltages ranging from 3V to 6V are some of the most regularly constructed. When it comes to strut length, a 3V dome offers three distinct options: shorter strut lengths, longer strut lengths, and more struts as you move up in detail. The smoother the surface of your dome, the more hubs and struts you’ll require.

• Dome with 6V power The size of your dome is the first decision you’ll have to make.
• SketchUp can assist you in visualizing things like this in a very simple manner.
• We created a Dynamic Component to allow us to instantly resize the dome.
• We designed ours so that we could type in varied diameters of domes as we desired.
• It is possible to get a model of our house for use with the free Sketchup program.
• You will be provided with a menu that is similar to the one shown below.
• Then, at the bottom, click on “Apply,” and your dome will automatically resize itself to the size you specified.

We used this model to determine where our domes should be placed on the site. After much deliberation, we settled on the twin 20-foot dome configuration you see below: Download our as-built model if you want to check it out in SketchUp before you buy it.

### Putting Together Your Materials List

From a stack of toothpicks on your desk to a large metal edifice, geodesic domes may be constructed out of a variety of materials, including paper. No matter what material you use to construct your dome, you must first determine the number of hubs you will want, as well as the length of all of your struts. You want to make very certain that you do this properly since the cost of making a mistake would be a very expensive pile of PVC that would rapidly become ineffective if not corrected. Allow me to quickly explain the philosophy behind the many methods you may compute struts, and then I’ll lead you in the direction of several useful calculators.

The mathematics underpinning these domes is explained in great depth in this paper from Berkley.

In other words, the entire distance traveled by each strut will be determined by these mathematical calculations.

If you know how much you need to remove from each hub, you may enter that information into our Dynamic Component, which can be found above.

### Getting the Right Hubs

The structure is formed by connecting all of the struts together through hubs. These aren’t the kinds of things you’d find on the shelves of your local hardware store, either. We looked into the possibility of fabricating our own (there are several options), but we eventually decided to use a firm calledSonoStarHub.com for our hubs. It saved us time while also ensuring the safety of our exhibit. In the event that you require them, Sonostar manufactures and distributes the hubs, bolts, and full kits.

The materials used here are off the shelf and can be obtained at any Home Depot.

Our pipe was really 1.9 inches in diameter on the outside.

We utilized 15 base hubs (each of which has four ‘arms’ on it), 6 5-star hubs, and 55 6-star hubs to construct our dome.

### Fabrication

Now that we’ve determined the size of our dome and the number of pipes and lengths we’ll need to cut, it’s time to start manufacturing the structure. After visiting Home Depot and witnessing the stunned expressions on the faces of the employees at the pro desk when I requested over 150 10′ PVC pipes, I needed to devise a means to cut a large quantity of pipe to the exact same length. I normally use my chop saw and measure out the lengths of items to cut, but that would be wasteful with this large number of pipes to be cut at once.

I was able to select the length and repeat the cuts over and over again in this manner.

The first stand I purchased did not have this feature, and I had to return it in order to obtain one that would not move when I bumped it a bit.

Having a big pile of pipes chopped up (the image above is only for one dome), you’ll need to drill holes in each end of them so that you can attach them to the hubs when you get to the job site.

As a result, I placed the pipe against the stop, drilled the first hole, and then flipped the pipe over to complete the process. I was able to align the first hole vertically with the screw on the left so that I could drill the second hole with the screw on the right.

You now have a massive pile of pipes that have been chopped and labeled. This is the point at which the excitement begins! Come on, let’s get this thing going. A dome on her front yard was created by myself and a helper before we built the other two at Maker Faire, simply to make sure everything functioned properly. With the use of a step ladder, the two of us were able to construct a 20-foot dome in a matter of hours. I’ll give you a good summary of how we put it together in the section below.

• As a first stage, you must set down the basic ring of pipes and link each connection with the 4-armed hubs, which are provided.
• If there is a significant drop off, just put a piece of wood or spare pipe below the dome to raise it up (for now).
• There will be a total of six of them.
• After that, erect the first round of base poles, with a 6-star hub being added every third set.
• Connect them to the rest of the red pipes, and then use the blue cross pipes to join them all together at the end.
• Continue to fill the pipes that surround the pentagons.
• Now that you have completed the construction of the dome, you may remove a segment of 6-spoked (red) poles to build a door for access.

That is exactly how you construct and manufacture a PVC Geodesic Dome!

## How to Build a PVC Geodesic Dome

Who wants to spend their time in a drab tent when there are so many other choices available? A geodesic dome may be used as a hut-like building that, when covered, can serve as an excellent camping shelter (or partying).

## Step 1: Tools and Materials

It is possible to construct this dome with only three tools: PVC pipe cutters, a bandsaw, and a drill press. It is possible to use a portable drill, but it will take significantly more time. Make careful you use ratcheting pipe cutters because there will be many hundred cuts to make. The following is a list of materials: In the case of the hubs Schedule 40 PVC pipe measuring 30’1″ in length (There will be waste) 1301′ Schedule 40 couplings are available. Bolts with hex heads measuring 261/4″ x 2″ 261/4″ hex nuts and 521/4″ washers are used.

• Struts that are too long (53 5/16″ for an 8′ high dome) For an 8-foot-high dome, 30 short struts (46 7/16″ in length) are required.
• Six inches must be removed from the length of each strut in order to account for the length of the hubs.
• Choice of pipe: For the struts, I utilized Class 200 pipe (which has a thin wall).
• It is also robust enough to support tarps, lights, and a flagpole.
• It will just be significantly heavier.
• It is possible to save over \$100 on couplings if you search around for them online rather than paying the typical home improvement store pricing.

## Step 2: Making Hubs

Dome hub construction is the most complex, time-consuming, and important component of the project. The hub design is comprised of PVC tabs that are fastened together to form a sturdy and flexible link between the struts of the vehicle. The usage of schedule 40 pipe is really critical in this situation. Class 200 is unable to withstand the strain of keeping the dome together without crumbling under its own weight. Schedule 40 is flexible enough to allow the dome to be constructed without bending exact angles, yet robust enough to prevent it from collapsing during construction.

Bolts with hex heads measuring 261/4″ x 2″ 521/4 hex nuts and washers261/4 hex nuts and washers

## Step 3: Mass Production

Given the high number of parts required for the hubs, it is critical to be able to mass produce vast amounts of similar pieces in a consistent manner. The assembly line approach and the use of jigs to reduce the need for time-consuming measuring are the most efficient ways to do this. I constructed my jigs out of plywood that I cut to fit over the PVC so that I could see where to cut without having to label anything. This made it possible for me to cut all of the hub pieces to length in a short amount of time and mark the notches without having to worry about it.

When building the jig, it is really beneficial if you can devise a method of holding the workpiece in order to prevent errors.

By focusing on a single sort of activity at a time, setup time is significantly reduced, and the entire process is completed much more quickly.

## Step 4: Cutting the Notches

This is by far the most time-consuming and challenging element of the process of creating the hubs, so plan accordingly. The notch needs to be cut all the way down the centre of the pipe, to a depth of approximately 2.5 inches. Although the marking jigs make this process a bit faster, plan on spending at least a couple of hours cutting. The collection of dust is really significant. PVC powder is not good for your lungs, and there is a lot of it in the environment. This is one instance in which wearing a decent dust mask or respirator may make the experience far more enjoyable.

An excellent alternative is to use a shop vacuum.

I had horrible results with some of the larger blades, so I went with a 1/4″ blade with small teeth to achieve success.

## Step 5: Flattening the Tabs and Drilling the Holes

I flattened all of the tabs in a vice to make drilling and assembly of the hubs more straightforward. You are not need to do this, but it is useful since it ensures that the hub components are compatible with one another. Drill a hole in the center of the hub pieces about 1/2″ from the end of the tab. This provides sufficient strength while yet allowing the hubs to fit together properly. Make use of a 5/8″ bit to ensure that the 1/4″ bolts will fit without difficulty.

## Step 6: Assembling the Hubs

By putting a 1/4″ bolt through the holes in the hubs, you may join them together. My choice of 2.5-inch bolts was made so that I would have enough thread left over to attach additional items, such as the dome covering or, subsequently, lights on the inside. To avoid having holes in your covering, make sure that the bolts are oriented internally instead than outwards.

Although I chose to have all of the bolts on the bottom hubs face outwards so that they could be attached to grommets on the covering, you may do anything you want with the bolts. Attach couplings to all of the tabs on the hubs once they have been bolted together.

## Step 7: Putting the Frame Together

The most satisfying element of constructing this dome has been watching the frame come together. You will most likely have spent several hours in the shop cutting hundreds of pieces of pipe at this point, and it is now time to transform that pipe into a dome. You will require the following materials: three to four companions (the more people, the easier this step is) Hubs with a 104-way configuration Hubs with 65 connections 106-way hubs with 35-way connectors Struts that are too long30Struts that are too short1 There is a lot of open space.

The first thing you’ll need is a schematic representation of the assembling process.

I prefer to construct it from the top down, with a small group of people lifting it up for each level.

It has been my experience that it takes at least three persons to set up the dome properly.

## Step 8: Covering the Dome

I decided to cover the dome with a few tarps to keep it from getting too hot. This worked well enough to keep the wind at bay and to look attractive, but it would never hold up to rain or other heavy rains. I intend to eventually construct a rainproof cover for this dome, but for the time being, it is only suitable for use in dry weather. After a lot of folding, rolling, and duct tape, the tarps were eventually able to fit together. We also removed a single strut in order to create a door.

## Step 9: Party!

Convert that dome into a wild party atmosphere. After all of your hard work, you deserve it.

## You Can Now Build Your Own Geodesic Dome at Home in Under an Hour with This Handy Kit

The geodesic dome, which was first popularized by Buckminster Fuller in the 1940s, has been used to create everything from little garden shelters in backyards to massive sports stadiums in major cities since its invention in 1940. In addition to being highly sturdy for its weight, the dome also has the most volume for the smallest amount of surface area, which makes it an excellent choice for a disaster shelter, among other advantages. The efficient internal environment of the dome attracted Fuller’s futurist side, in addition to its structural advantages.

In the end, this environment allows for natural heating and cooling to occur, and geodesic shelters have shown to be the most efficient human shelter in a variety of climates and temperature ranges.

A geodesic dome building kit from UK’sHubs has just gone into production following a successful Kickstarter campaign that gathered about \$65,000 to bring the concept to reality on July 24th.

According to designers Chris Jordan and Mike Paisley, “We’ve designed hubs, which enable speedy (less an hour, in fact, around 20 minutes if you know what you’re doing) and easy assembly of sturdy geodesic domes.” Dome building is now available to each and everyone, and there is no requirement for specialized skills, a large number of tools, a difficult construction process, or a lot of money.

Initial efforts will be directed at developing a single build kit that includes clear instructions and “everything but the sticks” for building a “dome-based anything.” At the end of the day, this will include all of the essential connecting hubs, ball joints, screws, and other pieces of hardware.

The “dome-based anything” can be anything from a garden room to a fruit cage to an outdoor reading room to a greenhouse, a chicken run, a children’s playhouse, an aviary, a festival tent, a hideaway, or practically anything else one might imagine.

## How To Make A Geodesic Dome Tent

Prices for geodesic dome homes are similar to those for other types of homes in that they vary depending on what you want to build. You could build a beautiful geodesic home with the aid of a kit for roughly \$50,000, or you could spend several hundred thousand dollars on something more extravagant.

## What are the disadvantages of geodesic domes?

Fireplaces may be tricky to install and, if you have a bigger property, fire escapes can be prohibitively expensive to put in. Building divisions and rooms within dome constructions may also be quite tough, especially if you don’t have a lot of previous expertise doing so.

## Can you live in a geodesic dome in winter?

Dome home designs have begun to take on ever more hard and sophisticated jobs, ranging from winter weather-resistant, fireplace-equipped homes built for icy mountaintops to meadow-worthy, naturally ventilated residences.

## How do you make a greenhouse hoop?

A hoop house can be constructed in a variety of ways. The quickest and most straightforward method is to drive metal pegs into the ground and slide six-foot pieces of PVC pipe over the plants, producing an arch appearance. Afterwards, just drape plastic over the hoops to protect your plants from cold temperatures and frost damage.

## What does put up a tent mean?

Phrasal verb is a kind of verb. When humans create a wall, a building, a tent, or any other structure, they make sure that it is as upright as possible.

## What is wrong with dome homes?

Domes are tough to construct a roof for. Moreover, if the roof is not particularly well constructed, they will leak like a sieve. It is more difficult to roof a dome, and it takes longer than it would for a typical house. However, because we utilize shingles that have a 50-year warranty or more, you will not have to reshingle for a very long time.

## Why are green houses domed?

In addition, the greenhouse’s dome-shaped design provides for efficient air flow and consistent temperatures, allowing it to maximize the sun’s light and warmth while simultaneously minimizing cooling and heating expenditures. Natural sunshine from every direction helps you to grow fresh organic food all year long, regardless of the season.

## How much does a glass dome cost?

Finished Dome Homes are around \$130 per square foot of floor space (based on 2013 pricing) when constructed. For example, a 1,000-square-foot dome-home shell will cost around \$60,000 (at 2013 prices); fully completed, it would cost approximately \$130,000 (at 2013 prices) (2013 prices). Start with our Feasibility Study, which is the most effective approach to get the ball rolling.

## How do you cover a geodesic dome greenhouse?

Polycarbonate panels are being used to cover the GeoDome Greenhouse. Plastic panels, such as polycarbonate, are among the most durable covers available. You have the option of selecting the thickness and the size of the panels that you want. In order to achieve your aim of having a year-round garden in your geodesic dome, this would be an excellent covering to use.

## Is Aircrete waterproof?

Plastic panels are being installed over the GeoDome Greenhouse.

Probably the most durable cover you can get is made with polycarbonate panels. Choose the thickness and the size of the panels that you need based on your preferences and requirements. The use of this covering would be ideal if you intend to establish a year-round garden within your geodesic dome.

## Can one person put up an easy up tent?

Easy Peak One Person Setup Technology is used in the construction of this rapid canopy tent. One person can effortlessly open and shut the canopy from the center, eliminating the need to lock and unlock the canopy leg sliders. This is a very efficient design. With just one pinch-free push, you’ll be ready to go!

## What does it cost to build a dome home?

Monolithic Dome Buildings Have Exorbitant Prices Typically, the cost per square foot for a normal home is around \$150 (\$290,000 for a home with 2,000 square feet). Would you be shocked to learn that the average cost of a dome construction project is about \$60.00 per square foot?

## How long does it take to build a geodesic dome?

Monolithic Domes may be constructed in a very short period of time. In most cases, it takes between six and eight weeks to complete the Airform project. Then it will take around two to four weeks to construct a dome shell the size of a house. Large buildings will take around six to 10 weeks to complete.

## What is the cheapest house to build?

Tiny houses, which are often described as homes with square footage ranging between 100 and 400 square feet, are among the most affordable types of homes to construct. However, because fitting your everyday demands into a small area sometimes necessitates specialized work, there may be additional expenditures associated with the custom cabinets and custom fittings that are necessary.

## Can you live in a Geo Dome?

The Eco-Living Dome — A Whole New Way of Living With the invention of the geodesic dome home, Fuller changed the world of design and housing, and Pacific Domes gives the option to live in a home that represents the structure and flow of nature itself!

## How much does a geodesic dome greenhouse cost?

Starting at around \$8,000 for a 15-foot diameter dome and rising to over \$40,000 for a 42-foot diameter dome, a Growing Dome greenhouse kit is an excellent value.

## How much does it cost to build a dome?

Currently, as of June 2019, it is predicted that the cost to construct a dome will vary between \$25 and \$30 per square foot. This pricing range is based on the hundreds of air-supported domes that The Farley Group constructed and installed throughout 2018 and the first two quarters of 2019 (as of January 31st, 2019).

## How long do inflatable domes last?

The lifespan of a dome might range from 15 to 20 years if it is erected and maintained correctly. Dome structures can be used for a variety of purposes, including storage, warehousing, manufacturing, emergency shelters, and pollution control structures, in addition to covering most sports fields.

## Are dome homes cheaper?

Monolithic Dome construction costs are often comparable to the cost of a custom-built conventional home with an equivalent level of interior finish.

For example, if you were planning on purchasing a \$100,000 house, you will very certainly have to spend \$100,000 for your dome house. The long-term and day-to-day costs of a Monolithic Dome, on the other hand, will always be cheaper.

## Is the Geodesic Dome Suitable for Living?

Ask me directly if the Geodesic Dome Tent hotel is fit for living in and I’ll say yes. My response is very definitely appropriate. There is “proof” that I did not say anything ridiculous.

## The first evidence: “Five-star” configuration

Having a five-star vacation comes as no surprise; nevertheless, what has become increasingly popular is five-star camping, which has the same basic setup as a five-star hotel. Among the amenities available from the geodesic dome tent hotel are a comfy single bed, an independent bathroom, a comfortable sofa, a soft carpet, and a refreshing air conditioner. When you open the door, you can take in the beautiful view outside, and when you close the door, you can feel comfortable. You have the opportunity to possess such breathtaking views and welcoming surroundings.

## The second evidence: “Epic-level” security

The safety of the geodesic dome tent hotel is “epic-level” when compared to the safety of typical camping tents. First and foremost, from an architectural standpoint, the construction of a spherical building is stronger than that of other forms, making it more ideal for living purposes than a traditional hotel structure.

Second, the galvanized steel pipe and high-strength tarpaulin used in the construction of the geodesic dome tent hotel are waterproof, wind-resistant, snow-resistant, rust-proof, and so on. It is possible to live there year-round, whether in the spring, summer, autumn, or winter.

## The third evidence: “uncommon” flexibility

In the event that you are traveling alone, a geodesic dome tent hotel, which may be outfitted with an open-air stargazing platform, may be the best option. It is simple to construct and disassemble, and it can be relocated to any location. It’s varied vistas with different geodesic dome tent hotels, much like different adventures encounter different people, and it’s different and lovely in its own way. We only have so much time in this life; what are we doing wasting it? Because the globe is so vast, please bring me, together with the geodesic dome tent hotel, to the beginning of the voyage.

## How About the Security of the Tent Hotel?

The advancement of time has resulted in an increasing number of tourists desiring to be in close proximity to nature. The glamping tent hotel, which is now popular both in the United States and overseas, is an excellent solution to these issues. Many individuals may be concerned about the safety of a tent hotel that will be used outdoors for an extended period of time. So, what about the safety of your data? Many people may have had the sensation of feeling cold in the morning when they woke up in their tent or when they were woken up by tents next to theirs. ## Thinking About Building a Geodesic Dome? Don’t.

It is important to note at the outset of this piece that this was an extremely ancient dome that had been coated with a layer of paint, and that many dome builders have stated that dome building procedures have substantially improved in recent years. Perhaps “Don’t construct it like this” should be the title of the article. After seeing an ageodesic dome residence in North Dakota, urban planning specialist Eric McAfee asks, “What happened to all those domes?” Because I owned a dome on Shoe Lake in Muskoka, Ontario, for a number of years, I might be able to provide an answer to your query.

## What We Learned From Our Dome

My dome was created by an engineer who was inspired by the massive American Pavilion at Expo ’67 in Montreal and wanted to replicate it. It was a remarkable feat of engineering; every triangle was created in his workshop outside of Toronto, and it was a sandwich panel of plywood and fiberglass insulation with exactly bevelled edges so that it could be welded together on site, most likely in 1969, before being transported to the location. After that, a coat of some type of special paint was applied to seal it.

• It was elevated eight feet above the rocks and had a large deck.
• The fact that everyone looked at it and laughed made it possible for me to purchase the home in the midst of a real estate boom for nearly no money at all.
• The next day, after sealing the sale, I drove my family up to the apartment for our first visit, while holding my 8-month-old daughter Emma in my left arm and pulling on the door with my right.
• I just got my arm up in time to save my daughter from getting hit in the head by a very heavy, saturated door as I tugged on it.
• Re-hung the doorframe, which I replaced with a new one.
• We rearranged the furnishings in the house based on where the water was leaking that particular day.
• I repainted the outside, wrapped steel strapping around it to hold panels in place, and continued to move the buckets about on the roof.
• Finally, I built a cabin behind it that served as the new kitchen and dining room (the wood house with metal roof to the left), and the dome served as a living space solely until it became so bad that it had to be closed off for two years due to a yellow safety tape.

I eventually got around to tearing it down and replacing it with a lovely square structure that only leaks a little.

## Domes Have a History

Engineers were inspired to build my dome after seeing the massive American Pavilion at Expo 67 in Montreal. It was a remarkable feat of engineering; every triangle was created in his garage outside of Toronto, and it was a sandwich panel of plywood and fiberglass insulation with perfectly bevelled edges so that it could be bolted together on site, most likely in 1969, before being transported to its final destination. A coat of some type of special paint was applied after that to seal it. At the time, there were no zoning regulations, therefore he built the structure directly adjacent to the water on one of the lake’s most visible spots; today, the regulations require that structures be 66 feet away from the water so that they are not visible to the public eye.

While working as an architect in the region, I happened upon it by chance.

Fuller and domes were two of my favorite things, so I couldn’t resist.

Rather than standing vertically, the door was in the shape of a parallelogram and slanted inward.

By Lloyd Alter, Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License We had no idea what to expect when we first got our geodesic dome.

In the house, we rearranged the furnishings based on where the water was leaking on any particular day.

Finished painting the outside, adding steel strapping to hold panels in place, and shifting the buckets about.

In the end, I demolished the structure and rebuilt it as a neat square structure that only leaks a tiny bit.
