The Different Types of Geodesic Domes

Geodesic domes can be either complex or quite basic in their construction. “Tessellations” refer to the varied levels of intricacy present in the work. The greater the number of tessellations in your dome, the smoother your dome will be. Dome voltages ranging from 3V to 6V are some of the most regularly constructed. When it comes to strut length, a 3V dome offers three distinct options: shorter strut lengths, longer strut lengths, and more struts as you move up in detail. The smoother the surface of your dome, the more hubs and struts you’ll require.

Putting Together Your Materials List

From a stack of toothpicks on your desk to a large metal edifice, geodesic domes may be constructed out of a variety of materials, including paper. Getting the Right Hubs

The structure is formed by connecting all of the struts together through hubs. These aren’t the kinds of things you’d find on the shelves of your local hardware store, either. We looked into the possibility of fabricating our own (there are several options), but we eventually decided to use a firm for our hubs. Now that we’ve determined the size of our dome and the number of pipes and lengths we’ll need to cut, it’s time to start manufacturing the structure. After visiting Home Depot and witnessing the stunned expressions on the faces of the employees at the pro desk when I requested over 150 10′ PVC pipes, I needed to devise a means to cut a large quantity of pipe to the exact same length. I normally use my chop saw and measure out the lengths of items to cut, but that would be wasteful with this large number of pipes to be cut at once.

I was able to select the length and repeat the cuts over and over again in this manner.

The first stand I purchased did not have this feature, and I had to return it in order to obtain one that would not move when I bumped it a bit.

Having a big pile of pipes chopped up (the image above is only for one dome), you’ll need to drill holes in each end of them so that you can attach them to the hubs when you get to the job site.

As a result, I placed the pipe against the stop, drilled the first hole, and then flipped the pipe over to complete the process. I was able to align the first hole vertically with the screw on the left so that I could drill the second hole with the screw on the right.

Building Your Domes

You now have a massive pile of pipes that have been chopped and labeled. This is the point at which the excitement begins! Come on, let’s get this thing going. A dome on her front yard was created by myself and a helper before we built the other two at Maker Faire, simply to make sure everything functioned properly. With the use of a step ladder, the two of us were able to construct a 20-foot dome in a matter of hours. I’ll give you a good summary of how we put it together in the section below.

  • As a first stage, you must set down the basic ring of pipes and link each connection with the 4-armed hubs, which are provided.
  • If there is a significant drop off, just put a piece of wood or spare pipe below the dome to raise it up (for now).

How to Build a PVC Geodesic Dome

Who wants to spend their time in a drab tent when there are so many other choices available? A geodesic dome may be used as a hut-like building that, when covered, can serve as an excellent camping shelter (or partying).

Step 1: Tools and Materials

It is possible to construct this dome with only three tools: PVC pipe cutters, a bandsaw, and a drill press. It is possible to use a portable drill, but it will take significantly more time. Make careful you use ratcheting pipe cutters because there will be many hundred cuts to make. Step 2: Making Hubs

Dome hub construction is the most complex, time-consuming, and important component of the project. The hub design is comprised of PVC tabs that are fastened together to form a sturdy and flexible link between the struts of the vehicle. The usage of schedule 40 pipe is really critical in this situation. Class 200 is unable to withstand the strain of keeping the dome together without crumbling under its own weight. Schedule 40 is flexible enough to allow the dome to be constructed without bending exact angles, yet robust enough to prevent it from collapsing during construction.

Step 3: Mass Production

Given the high number of parts required for the hubs, it is critical to be able to mass produce vast amounts of similar pieces in a consistent manner. The assembly line approach and the use of jigs to reduce the need for time-consuming measuring are the most efficient ways to do this. I constructed my jigs out of plywood that I cut to fit over the PVC so that I could see where to cut without having to label anything. This made it possible for me to cut all of the hub pieces to length in a short amount of time and mark the notches without having to worry about it.

When building the jig, it is really beneficial if you can devise a method of holding the workpiece in order to prevent errors.

By focusing on a single sort of activity at a time, setup time is significantly reduced, and the entire process is completed much more quickly.

Step 4: Cutting the Notches

This is by far the most time-consuming and challenging element of the process of creating the hubs, so plan accordingly. The notch needs to be cut all the way down the centre of the pipe, to a depth of approximately 2.5 inches. Although the marking jigs make this process a bit faster, plan on spending at least a couple of hours cutting. The collection of dust is really significant. PVC powder is not good for your lungs, and there is a lot of it in the environment. This is one instance in which wearing a decent dust mask or respirator may make the experience far more enjoyable.

An excellent alternative is to use a shop vacuum.

I had horrible results with some of the larger blades, so I went with a 1/4″ blade with small teeth to achieve success.

Step 5: Flattening the Tabs and Drilling the Holes

I flattened all of the tabs in a vice to make drilling and assembly of the hubs more straightforward. You are not need to do this, but it is useful since it ensures that the hub components are compatible with one another. Drill a hole in the center of the hub pieces about 1/2″ from the end of the tab. This provides sufficient strength while yet allowing the hubs to fit together properly. Make use of a 5/8″ bit to ensure that the 1/4″ bolts will fit without difficulty.

Step 6: Assembling the Hubs

By putting a 1/4″ bolt through the holes in the hubs, you may join them together. My choice of 2.5-inch bolts was made so that I would have enough thread left over to attach additional items, such as the dome covering or, subsequently, lights on the inside. To avoid having holes in your covering, make sure that the bolts are oriented internally instead than outwards.

Step 7: Putting the Frame Together

The most satisfying element of constructing this dome has been watching the frame come together. You will most likely have spent several hours in the shop cutting hundreds of pieces of pipe at this point, and it is now time to transform that pipe into a dome. You will require the following materials: three to four companions (the more people, the easier this step is) Hubs with a 104-way configuration Hubs with 65 connections 106-way hubs with 35-way connectors Struts that are too long30Struts that are too short1 There is a lot of open space.

The first thing you’ll need is a schematic representation of the assembling process.

I prefer to construct it from the top down, with a small group of people lifting it up for each level.

It has been my experience that it takes at least three persons to set up the dome properly.

Step 8: Covering the Dome

I decided to cover the dome with a few tarps to keep it from getting too hot. This worked well enough to keep the wind at bay and to look attractive, but it would never hold up to rain or other heavy rains. I intend to eventually construct a rainproof cover for this dome, but for the time being, it is only suitable for use in dry weather. After a lot of folding, rolling, and duct tape, the tarps were eventually able to fit together. We also removed a single strut in order to create a door.

Step 9: Party!

Convert that dome into a wild party atmosphere. After all of your hard work, you deserve it.
