Attaching the Mounting Rails to the Smittybilt Rooftop Tent

the direction in which the door will open Before you attach your new rooftop tent to your car, you’ll need to determine whether you want the rooftop tent to open to the rear or to the side of your vehicle, depending on your preferences. A. “Off the Back” is an abbreviation for “off the back.” It is preferred to open the car from the back for the majority of bigger vehicles (SUVs). The following are some of the advantages of this orientation: Extra roof space is left available for additional storage.

Prior to attaching the mounting extrusions to the base of the rooftop tent, they must be cut off at both ends, up to the second pre-drilled hole, and then reassembled.

  • Once this is completed, the mounting extrusions are fastened to the tent’s base at a right angle to the roof rack or roof bars, in the direction of the tent’s opening (along the length of the tent base).
  • “On the Periphery” For the majority of medium and compact cars (such as the Jeep Wrangler), opening “from the side” is recommended.
  • This means that the closed tent pack is more evenly distributed on the roof and generates less wind drag because the thin face of the tent pack is traveling forward when it is closed.

8.

Each ladder bracket should be bolted to the tent’s foundation through the holes that have been pre-drilled.

Ladder extension is as simple as sliding onto the ladder and securing it with lock pins (Fig 2A) The Rooftop Tent should be attached to your Roof Rack or Roof Bars.

Carefully raise the tent onto the back of the truck with help.

Insert an 8mm bolt through the sliding plate.

Take a look at Figure 3.

Use two bolts and two sliding plates with the base plate to hug the bar to provide a secure fit.

Overtightening nuts will result in the bolt head being stripped from its aluminum sliding plate, so be careful not to overdo it.

(Figures A and B) Step 2: Unhook the Velcro straps that hold the tent in place on either side of the tent (Fig C) Step 3: Slide the ladder out of the way until the locking pins engage.

Fold the tent open with care.

Please keep in mind that if your ladder is too vertical, you will require a ladder extension.

Remove the internal bungee straps and save them for when you repack the tent.

4.

After you have placed the poles into the pockets and completed the installation of the side rods in the next step, return to the previous step and fasten the quick release straps/buckles on the sides of the rain fly.

Cover rods for doors and windows should be installed.

Opening in a certain direction Before you attach your new rooftop tent to your car, you’ll need to determine whether you want the rooftop tent to open to the rear or to the side of your vehicle, depending on your preference. 1. “Off the Back” is an abbreviation for “off the back.” 2. Open-from-the-back access is preferred for the majority of bigger vehicles (SUVs). There are several benefits to adopting this approach: Additionally, there will be additional roof space available for storage. You will benefit from the weather protection provided by the tent over your head when gaining access to the back of your car when the tent is opened.

  1. The bottom of the tent might serve as a guide for your design.
  2. On the outskirts of town, B.
  3. Some benefits of this approach are as follows.
  4. In order to install the tent at right angles to the roof rack or roof bars, mounting extrusions are bolted to the tent’s base (across the width of the tent base) Follow the mounting instructions once you have determined which is the best option for your application.
  5. Use your hand to move your hand in between the interior of the foundation and the mattress and then push the bolts and washers into the pre-drilled holes that were previously created.

Ensure that your rooftop tent is centered (from side to side) on the roof of your car and that the mounting points (to the greatest extent feasible) are symmetrically positioned at each corner of the tent before tightening all the bolts.

Instructive Guide for Setup Step 1: Unfasten the cover strap, and then gently remove the cover from the tent by unfastening the Velcro along the perimeter of the tent and folding the cover over to the side as you go.

2.

To assist in opening the tent, the ladder may now be utilized as a lever.

XL tent veranda set up.

To begin, pull out the U-shaped bar and place it into the corners of the veranda. 2. Once the U-shaped bar is in the proper position, insert the ends of the bar into the retaining socket. If you insert the bar into the socket and then try to draw the veranda over the bar, you will cause damage. Always place the bar within the cloth before installing it into the sockets. 3. Attach guy ropes and stakes to the veranda to keep it from sagging. To pack away your rooftop tent, repeat all of the instructions listed above in the opposite order.

  1. Install the internal bungee cords, which will aid in the even folding of the tent.
  2. You might need to use a Ladder Extension if your car is taller than the standard ladder (Smittybilt part2785) WARNINGS The tent weighs about 116Ibs/139 lbs; ensure that the attachment on which it is being fitted can support this weight as well as the content weight.
  3. There is an approximate 661 lb/770lb weight capacity for this tent in this configuration (XL only) (With an equitable distribution of power) If your tent is overloaded, it may cause harm to your tent as well as to your car.
  4. Never drive with a tent in place.
  5. Storage and Handling Recommendations When closing the tent, do not pull down on the side holding Velcro straps as this can cause the tent to collapse.
  6. When closing the tent, press down on the top folded base to condense the tent, and then use the velcro straps to keep the bases in this place once you have finished.
  7. – Avoid storing the tent if it is damp.

As soon as you are able, unzip the tent and allow it to dry completely to avoid the growth of mold and rot.

– Do not drill locking holes in the ladder below the level of the existing locking pin holes.

Purchasing a ladder extension is recommended in the event that you need to expand the length of your ladder.

– Keep in mind that when you install a rooftop tent on your car, the total height of the vehicle increases.

Installing the rain fly and removing all interior items are not recommended.

After that, concentrate on all of the locations that have been sewn and water log the cloth as much as you possibly can.

It may be required to repeat this method two more times.

When seasoning the canvas, do not be concerned if your tent leaks the first or second time you use it; this is natural since the thread and canvas contract and expand together as they contract and expand together.

After the third seasoning, it is possible to apply a seam sealant. 6. Zippers may be lubricated with a silicon spray, which helps to keep them lubricated and increases their water resistant properties.

How to Set Up Smittybilt Roof Top Tent

Smittybilt roof top tents are specifically designed for those times when creepy crawlies and inquisitive creatures cause the greatest trouble. You will find it the most difficult to sleep with them through the night. This type of arrangement just serves to demonstrate why ground tents do not provide the comforts of home. There is just too much demand for comfort going on with more chances of groundwater leaking in. Due to the fact that roof top tents avoid these difficulties, people may now go out on camping trips in places where a traditional setup would have been impossible otherwise.

An easy-to-follow setup guide is included for the Smittybilt roof top tent.

  • Attach the mountain rails to the Smittybilt roof top tent using the included screws.
  • Attach the mounting extrusion to the Smittybilt roof top tent using the included screws.
  • Assemble the Smittybilt roof top tent on your roof rack.

The choice to switch from a ground tent to a roof top tent is a significant one for a number of reasons. Just as with any other purchase, finding the specifications and features you want is not always straightforward. There must be factors that should be followed, as well as research that should be evaluated. Roof top tents are typically complex and expensive to install. If you make a rushed purchase, you may wind up with a tent that is not up to par in terms of performance. Because such camping equipment is considered an investment, this article will explain why Smittybilt roof top tents are the finest choice for both standard park accommodations and wild camping adventures in the outdoors.

Smittybilt Roof Top Tent Features

Designed to be mounted quickly and simply on a factory-installed roof rack system or on an aftermarket rack system, the Smittybilt Roof Top Tent is a great addition to any vehicle. Because it is small and lightweight (weighing just 118 lbs), it may be mounted to virtually any rack arrangement. The tent is equipped with the following features:

  • Grab handle straps made of red nylon are used to aid in getting into and out of the tent and are available in two sizes. Essentially, these increase the level of caution required when climbing and descending the ladder
  • Screens and covers: can be rolled up and held in place with the assistance of the connected cords if necessary. LED light: This type of light is utilized to offer illumination in the early morning or late evening hours. a shoe bag that may be hung on the ladder or the side of the tent to provide storage
  • Sun-resistant: can be worn without a rain fly for the best results
  • 12-volt outlet: this may be used to charge cameras and other electronic devices. Side flaps: may be secured by pulling the bottom rope with a handle through the grommets on either side of the flap

Setup Steps

In order to set up aSmittybiltroof Top Tent, the first step is to locate a parking area. There are no falling boulders or falling tree branches in the appropriate parking spot, and there are no lightning strikes or severe winds in the right parking spot. Without taking these risks into consideration, you might end up with serious injury or even death if you simply set the parking brake without thinking about them first.

Step 2: Check all the Components

Check to see that the Smittybilt roof top tent is complete with all of the essential components, including the tent body, mounting rails, clamps, poles main support, pole can awning, pole tailgate awning, pole bag, tent bag, and ladder (if applicable). Take a look at the other features, which include red nylon grab handle straps as well as screens and covers. Other features include an LED light, shoe bag, sun-proof design, 12 volt-outlet, and side flaps. It is possible that if you do not verify these items, you may overlook those who have manufacturing problems and those who are not in excellent shape.

Step 3: Attach the mountain rails to the Smittybilt roof top tent

The mountain rails for the Smittybilt roof top tent are attached to the tent in the following phase of the setup process.

Having the Smittybilt roof top tent open to the rear of your car or to the side of your vehicle are the two options you have when it comes to opening the roof top tent.

  • Opening from the Rear: The opening from the rear position is excellent for most large-size vehicles, such as SUVs and pickup trucks. This creates more roof space for additional storage as well as greater weather protection from the elements. To arrive at this location, cut the mounting extrusions at both ends, up to the second pre-drilled hole, and then glue them back together. After that, attach the mounting extrusions to the tent’s frame with bolts. This should be done in the direction of the roof rack opening at right angles to it. Off to the Side: For tiny cars, such as the Jeep Wrangler, the opening position to the side is optimal. Tailgates are able to work normally as a result. Furthermore, it implies that the closed tent pack is more evenly distributed across the roof. As the tent travels forward, the wind drag is reduced due to the thin face of the tent going ahead. The mounting extrusions should be bolted to the base of the Smittybilt roof top tent in order to follow an opening from the side position.

Step 4: Attach the mounting extrusion to the Smittybilt roof top tent

In order to begin, first remove the mounting extrusion from the container and set it down on the ground. With the 6mm bolt and washers that were provided, slip one hand into the space between the interior of the base and the inside of the mattress. When your hand is already in the hole, place the bolts into the holes that have previously been drilled. Place the mounting extrusion into position and tighten the 6 mm nuts with a screwdriver. Tighten the bolts on the interior of the tent from the inside.

For the ladder, use 4 x 6mm x 40 mm bolts to secure it to the tent’s foundation.

Simply put it onto the ladder and secure it using lock pins.

Step 5: Fit the Smittybilt roof top tent to your roof rack

You should move to step five once you have finished the fourth step in the Smittybilt roof top tent setup. Lift the Smittybilt roof top tent into your vehicle with the aid of a friend. Do this cautiously with your partner so that you don’t damage the tent. Then, insert an 8mm bolt into the sliding plate and move the plate into the mounting extrusion until it is snug. Attach the tent to your roof rack after you’ve bolted the plate in place. Check to see that the tent is centered on the roof of your car and that the mounting points are equally and precisely spaced out on the roof.

Step 6: Raise the Smittybilt roof top tent

The final step in putting up a Smittybilt roof top tent is raising the tent. To begin, unfasten the cover straps as well as the Velcro around the edge of the bag. Remove the tent’s cover and carefully fold it over the side to keep it from becoming tangled. After that, unfasten the Velcro straps that hold the tent in place on either side. The ladder may be engaged by simply sliding it out until all of the locking pins are in place. After that, you may use the ladder as a tool to assist you in opening the tent.

  • Slide the ends of the rainfly’s poles into the pockets on the side of the tent, which are located on the inside of the tent.
  • Make certain that nothing is overtightened once again.
  • The hook end of the rod should be inserted through the grommet on the rain fly so that it faces outward and downward.
  • Before embarking on your first excursion, you can take a little snooze inside your tent.

Handling Cautions

  • When closing the tent, do not drag it down on the side, since this can cause the Velcro straps to become loose. These straps are not intended to be used for anything other than holding the bases together. If you do this and use too much power, it will pull out completely. It is recommended that you seal the tent in the following ways: (1) compress the tent by holding down the top folded base
  • And (2) use the velcro straps to fasten the bases in their respective positions
  • There are already locking pin holes in the ladder. If you drill extra locking holes below the rungs of the ladder, the ladder’s structural integrity may be compromised. If you find yourself needing to shorten the ladder, drill the holes above the current locking pinholes to accommodate the change. If the scenario calls for it, you should also invest in a ladder extension in case your ladder has to be extended. Always modify your driving to match the position of your center of gravity. This is due to the fact that the attachment of the Smittybilt roof top tent in your vehicle will affect the center of gravity of your vehicle
  • Check all of the nuts and bolts on a regular basis. It is possible that the nuts and bolts will become loose after a lengthy period of tent use. It is necessary to retighten the screws

Storage Guidelines

  • When the tent is wet, it should not be stored. To avoid mold and rot, the tent must be completely dried before being stored. It is not necessary to drag the tent on the ground in order to protect the cover from damage. It is not recommended to store the tent directly on a concrete floor.

Care Instructions

  • It is not necessary to use soap or detergent while washing the tent. Only cold water and a delicate brush should be used
  • Avoid exposing the tent to flammable liquids such as oil, gasoline, and other solvents. The usage of the tent on a regular basis may result in some wear and tear. Install a high-quality tent-proofing system as soon as you set up your tent for the first time.

5.0 stars out of 5 for this product If you require a large roof top tent, this is unquestionably a wonderful purchase. On August 28, 2016, a review was conducted in the United States. For me, Smittybilt has been a hit or miss proposition. I’ve purchased a bumper, flares, a CO2 tank, and other items from them in the past. It was difficult to get the bumper to fit properly, and the flares rusted in less than two weeks, but the CO2 tank functioned perfectly. While the quality of the tent concerned me, the evaluations I read online gave me reason to be optimistic.

  • After comparing the prices of other tents of this size, I determined that the Smittybilt’s pricing was worth a chance.
  • We took it out of the box and put it on the coffee table in the living room to see what it was like.
  • We folded it back up and installed it on our tent trailer, which we are now putting together, and then we were able to get everything set up.
  • All of the seams are in excellent condition.
  • It includes a 12V cigarette lighter converter, an extension cord, and an LED light that attaches with velcro to the tent’s top.
  • Because the XL is a newer model, the instructions are written for both the normal and the XL, which can be a bit confusing at first.
  • If you want a large rooftop tent but do not like to spend more than $2000 on a Tepui or Cascadia, the Smittybuilt Overlander XL is an excellent option for you.

  • Also, we found out how to remove the rainfly, so it will definitely be removable in the future.

The high position of the tent, on the other hand, It’s not something you’d want to do on a frequent basis, I’m guessing. While you may still obtain some nice ventilation by opening the “skylight” flaps on the roof under the rainfly, you should avoid doing so. Just without the view, of course.

Top reviews from the United States

On August 27, 2016, a customer in the United States reviewed the product and verified the purchase. By the way, this is the Overlander XL tent, which is almost twice as wide as the basic Overlander tent.

  1. We had the tent delivered through freight on a huge pallet (it weighs around 140lbs), and while the packaging was a bit dented, the tent itself arrived in perfect condition.
  2. It appeared to be in good condition overall, with only a few minor dents on the bottom of the tent floor caused by transportation.
  3. Every piece of hardware had been assembled.
  4. It comfortably accommodates four people, maybe five if there are little children present.
  5. They claim that the rain fly may be removed, however it is clearly sewed around the upper support poles, so I don’t see how that is possible.
  6. There’s a unique part for the XL that’s been arbitrarily placed towards the end of the instructions out of order, so make sure you read them all the way through before you start setting anything up.
  7. Note from the author (9/16/16): We have tented in the tent once in the backyard to get a feel for it before taking it on a lengthy journey.

This was reviewed on March 11, 2019 in the United States.

However, I will either give it a 5 star rating later on or downgrade it.

Furthermore, it appears to be highly durable.

However, despite the semi-poor qa/qc, this is a well-built structure.

Only thing I have to say is that your tent will leak if you don’t use the rainfly.

It collects in puddles.

Which then seeps through the cloth and zipper to the outside world.

I have tri fold mattresses that I use for unexpected guests or when we have a huge gathering at a lodge or anywhere.

I weigh 150 pounds, and I don’t notice the firm bottom except at pressure areas when crawling around or doing other things like that.

It’s like being blindingly brilliant.

When it rains strongly or moderately.

I’m confident that this holds true for any roof top tent.

Also, when you “season” your tent, as instructed by the manufacturer, you should do so at least twice before going camping.

Despite the fact that the instructions stated to remove it, I did not believe the inside would be harmed.

A great deal.

5th of May, 2020 (update) This was acquired in January of 2019.

I was able to go through it in one night.

I recently hauled it out to prepare it for mounting to my trailer, which has been accumulating ice.

It’s not even very tattered, to be honest.

However, they are all separated.

I had no idea that individuals could make straps that weren’t braided.

I’m going to keep it at 4 stars for now.

However, if the straps look like that after 1.5 years, it’s time to replace them.

4.0 stars out of 5 for this product I can’t give it a perfect score just yet.

I haven’t had a chance to put it to use yet.

I’ve seen a slew of videos on the subject.

As a comparison, I have not stayed in any other higher-end brand roof-top tents yet.

Threads are coming out of several areas where they have sewn twice or more.

They stitched the support around the stargazing zippers in this location.

Due to the fact that it has a lip that gathers water.

The cusion was rather good.

And it’s pretty much the same thing as it was before.

The led is too bright.

However, it will be beneficial in any case.

You’ll also get a pool of water above the ladder area, which is where the awning is located.

However, I wish there was a practical manner of storing this vertically without the risk of destroying the cover or tent fabric due to the weight of the tent.

Remove the mattress as soon as possible.

But that did happen.

From the stargazing zippers on both sides, it’s a simple design.

The vehicle was used on a one-day road trip that required a 2-hour drive each way.

Since then, I’ve been keeping the tent underneath my patio (about 1 and a half years ownership).

All of the straps were frayed, which I noticed right away.

All of the strands are still linked to one another.

This indicates that the straps are not braided.

Take a look at the images.

Only because I wrote amittybiilt regarding thebiddue, and they are sending out a replacement set absolutely free of charge with no strings attached.

Hope they intend to give me replacements on an annual basis in the future.

Purchase that has been verified This tent is enormous; I have a 2017 Toyota Tacoma extended bed, and it fits well on top of it.

The inside is enormous; we’ve taken it camping with us numerous times and I’m confident that four people can comfortably fit inside.

The ladder’s design is a little unusual; when you open it up, the side that rests on the ladder side seems a little flimsy.

It’s been a reliable setup, and I’ve taken it on a number of excursions. The tent is well-constructed and performs just as stated. Apparently, a V2 is now available, which addresses several difficulties such as the ladder, which was included on the V1. Advantages: Sturdy construction and attractive design There are an infinite number of mounting choices.

Our Verdict

TheSmittybilt Overlanderis a fantastic rooftop tent for any occasion. When compared to the other tents in our evaluation, this one performs as well as or better than the others in several areas. Smittybilt has paid attention to even the smallest details when constructing this product, as seen by the inclusion of supplementary features such as a hanging boot bag for dirty boots and an innovative LED light strip. The mattress provides exceptional comfort, and the canopy is designed to endure even the most severe storms.

The cover system is one area that you may find frustrating, and here is where we come in.

In addition, when the cover is totally removed rather than simply dangling from one side, it is a little more difficult to reattach it.

Our Analysis and Test Results

Since its inception, Smittybilt has been a basic, blue-collar corporation. They provide well-designed items that are affordable to the common person, and their rooftop tent is a good example of this. TheOverlanderis long-lasting, it incorporates features that other manufacturers want you to pay extra for, and, best of all, it is far less expensive than its competitors. The Overlander is a fantastic alternative for anyone who isn’t concerned with a little more setup time or a little customisation throughout the manufacturing process.

Performance Comparison

Despite the fact that it is substantially less expensive than the top-tier rooftop tents, the Overlander holds its own against them. Space and Comfort

When it comes to space and comfort, the Overlander is one of the best options we’ve seen so far. In addition to a maximum interior height of 51 inches, “, you’ll be able to easily sit up and take in the scenery, and you’ll have plenty of space to change your clothing as well. In comparison to the top-shelf rivals, the floor size is the same (38 sq ft). There are two side windows and two roof windows on the second story. Its inbuilt LED light strip is one of the Overlander’s most useful features, since it illuminates the tent and makes putting up your bedding in the dark a straightforward chore.

Durability

On the durability front, the Overlander is one of our most durable models. When it comes to putting its brand on inferior items, Smittybilt is not recognized for doing so. The 600 D polyurethane canopy is extremely durable and will endure almost any weather condition that comes its way. In our testing, the Overlander ladder was the broadest of all the ladders we examined. At the age of seventeen “When compared to other ladders, it makes transporting equipment, children, or pets up to your sleeping zone a lot safer and easier operation to complete.

The integrated boot bag is one aspect that contributes to the Overlander’s overall longevity.

Ease of Conversion

Converting the Overlander into a camping vehicle is a pretty simple process. Taking off the cover is as simple as releasing two straps and then taking off the Velcro that secures the cover around all four sides of the tent to complete the process. Because it is a sliding ladder rather than a telescoping ladder, it is simple to extend the ladder to the desired length after the cover has been removed. Setting up the awning is a time-consuming and labor-intensive process. The side window awning will require four poles to be set up, and the door awnings will require another four poles to be set up, totaling twelve.

With the aid of the internal bungee system, transitioning from camping mode to travel mode is a breeze.

Photograph by Ross Patton Smittybilt also employs an internal bungee system to aid in the collapse of the canopy, which reduces the time it takes to move from the campsite to home (or to your next destination).

Ease of Assembly and Installation

TheOverlandertent is not the most straightforward to build or set up. It’s the heaviest tent we’ve ever tested, so even the smallest movement or modification takes extra work. The installation package only included the most basic tools, so unless you already have a ratchet set on hand, you’ll have to put in a little more effort to complete the task. Also, the sliding ladder is pre-drilled with two sets of holes, but unless the height of your rack matches one of these sets, you’ll have to drill additional holes to accommodate your rack height.

When compared to other options, the LED strip requires a few more minutes of setup time, but is well worth it in the long run.

It’s constructed primarily of Allen wrenches, which eliminates the aggravation of construction.

You can use the LED kit in your car because it comes with a lengthy extension wire that allows you to plug it into a 12 volt outlet.

Cover Convenience

It is necessary to entirely remove the Overlandercover when switching from travel to camping mode. Although it is convenient to have the cover out of the way, you are left with a large rubber cover that must be stored. All of the other tents that we tried had the cover fastened on only one side, which made it simple to roll up, stow, and reattach when it was time to hit the road. When it comes time to pack up camp, we discovered that it is more difficult to orient the cover if it is not already attached to the tent.

We discovered that the Thule Tepuicovers are the most straightforward to deal with.

Best Applications

Someone who wants to enter into the rooftop tent game but does not want to empty their bank account in order to do so should utilize theOverlander application, which is the best one available. It provides virtually all of the features included in the other tents in our study, but at a lower cost and with a little more elbow grease. If you don’t mind that it’s a few pounds heavier, that it might take a little longer to set up, that it could require a little adjustment, and that it takes a few extra minutes to convert, then this is a good rooftop tent for you to consider.

Value

TheOverlanderprovides a great deal of value. Even though it is one of the most affordable rooftop tents available on the market, it provides a comparable level of room, comfort, and convenience to goods that are double the price. Not only does it compare favorably to more expensive tents, but it also provides more in several aspects. The tent is illuminated by an unique LED light strip that mimics the lighting in your living room, and the rubber boot bag ensures that you will never have to worry about bringing damp shoes inside the tent again.

Let nothing deceive you – this is a very high-quality rooftop tent at an affordable price.

Conclusion

When you’re investing this much money, it’s critical to look for value. We chose theSmittybilt Overlander as the winner of our Best Buy Award because it is an excellent rooftop tent that will not leave you with a hole in your pocket.

The Overlander isn’t the lightest or the most practical rooftop tent available, but if you’re wanting to acquire a rooftop tent without spending hundreds of dollars, it’s the best option. — Ross Patton et al.
