Camping options include: reservable campsites. About Guernsey State Park, located in southeastern Wyoming, is a mecca for history aficionados looking for artifacts from the past. The grounds are home to some of the best examples of Oregon Trail wagon ruts in the country, as well as Register Cliff, a massive slab of flat stone that served as a landmark for travelers along the Oregon Trail, who carved their names into the stone to keep a record of their arrival and to assist others in staying on the right path (many are still there).

Camping is provided in seven different locations, five of which are directly on the lake, and a few of which have lovely yurts available.

Chris D.Scout (Chris D.Scout) The park is well-kept, and the campsites are evenly spaced. Dogs are not permitted on the beach, and there are a lot of rangers. If you’re on an electric site, it’ll be hot with very little sharing. While there is no electricity near the river, there is plenty of shade. There is no mobile phone coverage at the campground, but if you drive 1/4 mile out of the park, you will have excellent service. Right on the money. I believe I awarded this park four stars since I had low hopes for it.

The vistas are breathtaking. Because the reservoir was not conducive to fishing, we moved on to the adjoining Grayrocks Reservoir, where we had more results. In addition, the water is really cold! We tried our hand at swimming. While we were there, there was also a little wildfire.

The worst State Park experience I’ve had thus far. Although it is not entirely the responsibility of Wyoming State Parks that the lake was drained, they might have done a better job of explaining on their website and in follow-up emails that there is now nothing but a large ditch and no longer any lake. We stayed at Sandy Point at Guernsey State Park for the night. Given that we had been informed in advance that the reservoir had been emptied, it came as no surprise that our lakefront location was a little disappointing. The campsite is clean, and the vaulted toilets are adequate in terms of comfort. The power hookups were excellent, and the site was flat and flattering. We didn’t have any more t. We stayed at Sandy Point at Guernsey State Park for the night. Beware, the Guernsey Reservoir is completely depleted. The North Platte River flows through the area that would comprise the reservoir. It takes 200 yards to get to the river from Sandy Point campsite, which is traversed by a lot of muck. This was not stated anywhere on the state’s booking page. This is quite frustrating! There are a few other courageous campers there, but the most of the campsites are deserted. Wow, what a fantastic site this was. In Guernsey State Park, there are various Mini-campgrounds to choose from. We stayed at Sandy Point, which was really beautiful. Being directly on the lake, you can gaze out your windows and take in the breathtaking scenery! The campsites are spacious, with lots of area to spread out and relax. The plots are gravel and mostly flat, with some sloping. There are a few disadvantages. more Wow, what a fantastic site this was. All of the electric sites are next to the train tracks, and sure, they are busy. but that is something I enjoy about them, and I was only woken up by train action once every night. In the park, there is a nice museum. My mid-September visit was pleasant, with only a few mid-week campers there. It is recommended that you make a reservation (and pay the Reserve America cost) since better located sites are reserved. Craig [email protected] would stay here again in a heartbeat. There are many positive things to mention about Guernsey. The Lake is a beautiful place. The caves are where it’s at. It’s fine for an overnight stay. We wanted electricity in case we needed to use the air conditioning in early September, which we did. Camping is available beside the reservoir near trees, but the electric sites are basically a row of tent sites on a gravel parking lot. There is no privacy or shade, and it is quite dusty. Toilets should be flushed thoroughly. There are no showers. There were trains close, but they didn’t disturb us (I wore earplugs just in case). Verizon 3GGrammaB would return to this hotel.

“Bomb Testing!”

Updated on the 8th of August, 2014. Our visit to Guernsey State Park took place in June of 2005, after the lake had been drained for the season. We were the only people camping in the entire park, which made for an incredible experience. That is, until the military began raining bombs from the skies on the population. The shock from the bombs was so powerful that it rocked the trailer we were sleeping in. Our Ranger explained to us what had happened and that they were.more Aluminarium would return to this location.

Wyoming State Parks, Historic Sites, & Trails – Campsites For RVs

Overnight camping is available at Guernsey State Park in a number of configurations. For those who want a more rustic dryland camping experience, the Park provides 245 designated campsites that can accommodate RVs or travel trailers as well as those who prefer and require power and water hookups. Some campsites are only available for reservation from May 1 to September 30, and others are only available year-round. Location

The Park contains 245 designated campsites that can accommodate overnight camping needs ranging from those who choose a more rustic dryland experience to those who like and require power and water hookups for their RVs or travel trailers. Availability

During the entire year, campgrounds are open. Reservations for reservable sites may be made up to four (4) months in advance of the intended arrival date between May 1 and September 30. Wyoming State Parks, Historic Sites, & Trails

Guernsey State Park has seven campsites to choose from. Five people are gathered around the lake. Comfort stations, picnic tables, fire grills, and drinking water are available at all campsites. A trailer dump station is also available near the south entrance of Guernsey State Park, which is accessible by car or on foot. Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) projects in this park are some of the best examples of CCC work in the Rocky Mountain region. The Guernsey Museum, the Castle, and Brimmer Point, all of which were constructed by the CCC, are all open for exploration.

The structure itself is constructed entirely of hand-hewn wood and hand-forged iron.
After passing through the Castle, with its massive fireplace and winding staircase, you will arrive at an observation deck with a beautiful view over the park.
Walking and hiking have always been popular activities at Guernsey State Park, and they continue to be so today.
It is possible to begin exploring the trail system at the Brimmer Point turnoff.
The majority of the paths are somewhat strenuous in terms of physical exertion.
Many relics of The Oregon Trail may still be observed today in Wyoming, particularly in the state’s northernmost counties.
Visitors to Register Cliff, which is located two miles southeast of Guernsey, were furnished with a “chalkboard” on which they could write their names to be seen by others who followed them.

Guernsey State Park, Wyoming – Camping Reservations & Campground Map

Important Notifications and Information Information on the 2022 Reservation Season The reservation season for 2022 will run from May 1 to September 30. Outside of the season, all campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis only (aka walk-in). The camping season begins with the opening of reservations for Wyoming residents up to 120 days prior to their arrival. Non-residents may begin making reservations up to 113 days before their scheduled arrival. Fees for making a reservation: Residents are worth $4. Non-Residents are charged $8. Payment of Fees: Day usage and camping fees are collected on a per-vehicle basis. A reservation only covers one car
Any additional vehicles must be paid for on the day of arrival at a booth or self-service station. Cancellation Policy: If you cancel your reservation on or before the day of your arrival, you will get a full refund (less the reservation charge). If a tourist departs before the scheduled departure time, there will be no compensation for wasted days or nights. Permits for one year are non-refundable (includes daily use, camping, ORV, and Snowmobile). There are no refunds for reservation costs. Check-In/Check-Out: Upon arrival, you will be required to check in. It is necessary to check in after 3:00 pm and check out before 11:00 am. If you will be arriving late, please call the park at least 12 hours in advance. In an attempt to prevent users from bypassing the booking restrictions, an 18-day hold on date modifications will be applied to bookings made at the maximum booking date of 120/113 days in an effort to prevent users from circumventing the booking rules. After the 18th day, date adjustments will be accepted as per standard procedure. No-Show Reservations Are Not Automatically Cancelled: If a guest fails to arrive for their reservation by 11 a.m. the day after their scheduled arrival (a “no-show”), their reservation is not automatically cancelled. Wyo Parks employees must personally visit the site to ensure that it is unoccupied before entering the reservation cancellation information into the system. This takes up valuable staff time and prevents the site from being made available to others! Please be considerate and cancel your reservation if you will not be able to keep it. Penalties for Failure to Appear: Customers that fail to appear at their planned time of 11 a.m the following day are referred to as ‘no-shows.’ No-shows are strictly prohibited! If you are unable to use your reservation, please cancel so that another family can take use of the facility. Repeat offenders are identified and recorded in the system, and the following sanctions may be imposed on them: The first and second no-shows will result in the cancellation of the reservation (with no refund)
The third no-show will result in the cancellation of all bookings for the year (with no reimbursement). 4 or more people: Reservation rights have been suspended. Other Important Information: Sites must be occupied at least once a night. During any 30-day period, the number of days you can camp at a state park is limited to 14. The 30-day term is a “rolling” 30-day period, which means that any two stays within 30 days of each other (in the same park) are not authorized. When outside of the car or camping unit, dogs must be restrained by a leash. Wyo Parks is reliant on visitor fees to survive! 100% of the cash received through visitor fees is reinvested directly into parks and sites to finance new construction, renovation projects, site interpretation, and general upkeep. Outside of automobiles and camping trailers, no glass containers are permitted. Pets must be kept on a leash at all times while on the premises. Dogs are not permitted on the beaches at Sandy Beach, Cottonwood, Sandy Point, or Sandy Cove

Guernsey State Park – a detailed look

Long Canyon Campground is located towards the north end of Guernsey State Park, on the right (east) side of the reservoir, where the reservoir splits. Guernsey State Park is a large state park with a total area of 6000 acres. Of course, when compared to Yellowstone National Park in western Wyoming, which has 2.2 million acres, it’s a speck in the grand scheme of things, but Yellowstone is the second largest National Park in the lower 48 states.

The reservoir is dammed towards the southern end of the park, and –this is important– because to water rights agreements, the dam is fully opened twice a year, and the reservoir is totally emptied each time the dam is completely opened.
Instead, your campsite will be located along the edge of what will eventually become a gigantic mud pit – no swimming, boating, or other recreational activities will be permitted.
There is no fishing in the reservoir as a consequence of this regularly planned action; in fact, the reservoir is not even stocked because the fish would just be sent downstream to Nebraska as a result of this semi-annual emptying!

I’m at the park right now, and I’ll be there in April and May (2020), so an empty reservoir isn’t a concern for me right now.
I’m not camping at the park since it’s restricted due to the infection, but there’s a lot of information about RV camping later in this piece that you could find useful.

The southern end of Guernsey State Park is one of my favorite kayaking places — it is towards the heart of the park and has a great view. Kayaking in Guernsey Reservoir is a calm and inspirational activity that also provides excellent workout. It was an exceptionally peaceful morning on the sea!

Camping in Guernsey State Park

There are a LOT of camping spots available here! To be sure, it’s much in excess of 200. And a LOT of them are on the sea. However, if you have a huge camper, you will need to restrict where you may move inside the park as well as how you access the park. If you want your camper to be able to access certain sites, you must be picky about the ones you choose. Continue reading for additional information on these concerns. Waterfront campsites at Long Canyon Campground – located at the northern end of Guernsey State Park (yes, these campsites can accommodate large campers; however, you must enter by the north entrance!) First and foremost, let us discuss camping – both RV and tent camping.

Some portions of the park are not suitable for campers (of any type!) and there are numerous such locations throughout the park.
Because not all RV parks can accept longer RVs, Reserve America will aid you in determining which sites are ideal for RVers and which ones can accommodate longer RVs.
That being said, there ARE some excellent locations for longer campers (even the 40+ foot behemoths) — I will discuss this in more detail later.
In Guernsey State Park, the majority of the RV campsites are designated as dry camping areas.

Camping Fees in Wyoming State Parks

Wyoming has established a charge scheme that distinguishes between day use and overnight use. To give an example, the summer day-use price in Wyoming is 9.00 (summer rate), and the overnight rate is 16.00 (for the site, if it is a water/electric location, an additional $10./night is charged). An overnight campground costs 25.00 (plus 9+16) for a 24-hour period. If you expect to spend a significant amount of time in Wyoming State Parks, you may save money by obtaining an annual day ticket for 70.

price for a dry camping site. Please keep in mind that the annual pass is NOT a 12-month pass; it expires on December 31 regardless of when you purchase it during the calendar year. Aaah, more kayaking is in order! Yes, it’s a tough life when you’re only a few minutes away from here.

Guernsey State Park – a South and a North Entrance

The South entrance, which is located immediately off U.S. 26 and is the closest to the town of Guernsey, is the most convenient. Guernsey, by the way, is approximately half way between Wheatland to the west and Torrington to the east in terms of distance. Small communities such as Casper (90 minutes northwest), Cheyenne (just under 2 hours south), and Scotts Bluff, Nebraska are the closest significant cities (90 minutes east.) The majority of the park may be reached in minutes from the town of Guernsey, which is literally minutes away.

This is the side of the park that is significantly more accommodating to big rigs than the other.

Lakeside Drive, which is a couple of miles from the entrance, has a 45-foot restriction on the combined length of your car and trailer!

Larger campers will be able to accommodate themselves on the route to Sandy Point and in many of the campsites on the west side.

Sandy Point and the west side of the park

When you finally reach the Sandy Point turnoff, you’ll be welcomed by a breathtaking drive that will take you to more than half of the park’s campgrounds, many of which are (again) on the water’s edge. This is important to note since it is the only safe path to go if you have a large camper while entering from the south. There are a slew of additional camping places only a few minutes up the road from Sandy Point — I’d guess that the journey from the south gate to Sandy Point is roughly a 4-mile drive.

That’s a “first come, first served” camping place for the time being (though it may change).
There is no need to make a reservation in advance as long as the location you desire is available.
Cell service (at least for Verizon) is accessible in much of the park, however I did come across a few dead places.
“The Castle” is located at Guernsey State Park.
by “FDR’s workers,” with an estimated cost of around a million dollars to construct something similar now!
It’s a fascinating sight to behold, and there’s an outhouse nearby that was built in the 1930s that’s also worth seeing.

The North Entrance to Guernsey State Park

In order to go from Guernsey (the town) to the North Entrance without ever entering the park, you must first travel from Guernsey (the town). It makes use of roadways that are located east of the park. This road system is clearly large rig friendly, and you would want to take use of it if you intend to camp towards the northern end of Lakeshore Drive. A good camping location near to the lake at Long Canyon East Campground that can handle large rigs may be found in the campground’s eastern section.

RV Camping – Keeping it Afforable

We all attempt to camp on a tight budget, and this is something to which I’ve grown sensitive over the years. According to my own experience, several state parks have recently become too costly to camp at. Costs for dry camping at Wyoming State Parks are on the higher end of what I’m comfortable with, at $16 per night (assuming you have an annual day pass for Wyoming State Parks). Water and electricity are included in the $26 per night cost, which is a competitive pricing. A combination of rustic campsites and water/electric sites may be found in the northwest corner of Guernsey State Park’s Sandy Beach to Sandy Point Campgrounds, which are located in the park’s Sandy Beach to Sandy Point Campground.

Certainly, if you’re a “seasoned citizen,” you should consider purchasing a Lifetime National Parks Pass, which costs $80 and is valid until you reach the age of 62.
It is beneficial for MUCH MORE than only National Parks!

In addition, being able to DRY CAMP (camp without access to electricity, water, or sewer) will allow you to SAVE MONEY!

Guernsey State Park, Wyoming

Sarah Reish is the author of this piece. Camping is one of our favorite pastimes to partake in. We’ve tented in the rain, wind, snow, and on the most beautiful summer day of our lives.

We were fortunate in that the weather on our excursion was excellent, albeit a little gloomy. While visiting Guernsey State Park, we brought our teardrop camper with us, and we investigated all of the campgrounds until we discovered the one that was the ideal fit for our needs.

The Experience

It was a dream come true to have our campground directly on the river and surrounded by trees. After setting up our tent, we headed off to discover the wonders of this beautiful park. We were happy to discover that it provides a plethora of things that kept us occupied despite the fact that we had never been there before. An outside fire pit and picnic table provided the perfect setting for cooking and resting after a long day of exploring. This was a pleasant difference from our usual situation because the position was shielded and we were not fighting the wind at all.

After touring and learning more about the Civilian Conservation Corps, we returned to camp.

Campgrounds

There are 13 campsites within a 10-mile radius of Guernsey State Park. Some provide utilities, but others are more rudimentary in nature. Campers may choose from 192 available campsites, which can be reserved through the website Reserve America. The campground at Sandy Beach has a large number of campsites, and there are waterfront spaces accessible all around the lake. Before making a reservation, do your homework. There are four yurts available for rent for one-night visits or longer stays of up to a week. Decks, picnic tables, fire pits, charcoal grills, ceiling fans, and wood fireplaces are all included in the price of the Yurts. There are two bunk beds in each of these yurts, which may accommodate up to six people. A single night’s stay costs $67, while a full week’s stay costs $469.

Davis Bay

This is one of the smaller campsites, making it ideal for a group of people. There are four locations, one of which is accessible to people with disabilities. Spotted Tail

This park does not have direct access to the water and is one of the first come, first served sites in the area. It is not a waterfront campground. When the other sites are booked, this location provides camping space for tourists. We determined that they are ideal for individuals who prefer to spend their days visiting the sights, hiking, being on the water, or at the beach. This site offers a variety of amenities.

Red Cloud

This is another tiny campground with four different camping spots to pick from. The park does not have power, but it does have picnic tables and is located on the east side of the lake, close to the water. There are portable restrooms available at this campsite.

Black Canyon Cove

This is a group campground that can accommodate a maximum of 20 people at a time. It is situated on its own private beach and has two picnic tables as well as a fire ring for guests. RVs and trailers can be accommodated. While we were wandering, we came upon a campsite that was in use, but the campers who were staying there had their boats tied along the shore. This is an excellent group camping location for individuals who wish to tent while also participating in aquatic sports. There are no amenities available at this campground, which is a shame.

Black Canyon Point

This campsite, which is directly across the street, includes four sites. This campsite is in a rustic state and does not have any amenities. The camping areas are directly on the water’s edge. Campers will be able to use potable bathroom facilities at this campground.
