HOW TO SET UP YOUR DIY GROW TENT

Currently, my 10 bag seed sprouts are housed in an unused and uninstalled bath/shower stall fixture that was never utilized in an unfinished would-be master bedroom and is currently being used as a workshop. As a result of my worries about lightproofing and my want to have some control over ventilation (I cannot utilize more than 10-15 percent of this area), I was considering going to Home Depot and purchasing a couple lengths of PVC with fittings. I’d want to build a frame out of PVC pipe that’s around 4x5x5 to 6x6x6 (length and width are very realistic, height will need to be about 5-6feet max, I’m attempting to grow using LST, however I’m contemplating scrog) in dimensions. I’d next wrap this frame with a layer or two of black plastic sheeting, utilizing velcro for access flaps and other features, as well as cutting holes for ventilation fans and passive air intake, then coat the insides with either white plastic or mylar to protect it from the elements. To be honest, it was solid enough with plastic and a couple of little cfls, but if you want to hang fans or nicer lights, I’d recommend something different. Alternatively, you might use 1.5″ if necessary.

Basically, we seal off rooms with rolls of plastic that resemble orange tarps to keep the air out. It will be airtight with only that and a little duct tape if you buy thick enough material (8 mil or more). However, if you are concerned that it will become hot enough to catch fire, you can purchase white fire-resistant rolls to protect yourself from this possibility. It isn’t awful to construct a frame out of plastic, provided that the plastic is kept tight and wrinkle-free, and that every seam is double-widely duct taped. Make sure there are no creases in the duct tape, as there should not be any in the plastic.

Although that is based on reasonable pricing, it is possible that the price will rise as high as 70$. If all goes well with the CFLs and DIY, I want to invest in high-pressure sodium lights and a ‘real’ grow tent in the near future.   • Date of joining:June 29, 2011 Messages:15 Likes Received:17 After discovering that I could have Lowes or HD cut plywood into boards that would go through a window, I estimated that a 4x4x5 box would cost around 50 dollars in wood and 20-50 dollars in paint, mylar, and sealant to construct. In a twist of irony, I was working on surface area and dimension calculations for a growbox/tent in an old calculus notebook, knowing I’d need it one day. Using a preliminary estimate, both come out to around 70-100 dollars. Considering that plywood is theoretically much more difficult to put together because of framing measurements, and that pvc is simply cutting and sticking into fittings, then covering in plastic and taping up, and that plywood is much more durable when compared to plastic sheeting, and that pvc can be disassembled for the cost of replacing plastic sheeting and is lighter to move if necessary, I don’t shop till Friday, so there’s still time to think about it. Perhaps I should reduce the size of the grow to 3x3x5 or something like, given that this is my first attempt.

I chose with a tarp wrapped over a PVC frame as my construction method. It will work if done correctly, and it will be light and odor proof as well. However, it is just temporary and will begin to come apart after a few growing seasons. Purchase a genuine tent or construct a wooden cab as a treat to yourself. You will thank yourself when you only have to pay for a grow area once rather than twice or more times, as well as for upkeep on the DIY “tent.” After two growing seasons, I decided to toss the homemade tent since 1) it looked out of place and 2) it began to break apart after being opened and closed several times. I currently have a cab that has been converted into a storage cabinet. I still need to make a screen and a rumple bucket, but they are simple tasks.
