Material to make a tent window – Help, please!

The Grand Canyon State is represented by Valerie EBPL [email protected] The idea of installing a transparent window in the vestibule fly of my Big Agnes tent has occurred to me. This would allow me to check if the skies are clearing while I’m safely tucked up in my tent. My previous tents with windows were made of a flexible, clear material, which I am aware of, but I have no idea what it is or where I might be able to purchase it. Does anyone have any suggestions? I also recognize that I will be creating a vulnerability in the fly, but I intend to properly and carefully seam seal it – is there any other compelling reason for me to refrain from doing so?

However, I would expect that you would have more options in the United States, as you normally do.

That may not be a problem for you, on the other hand.

Google “clear window pvc fabric” and you’ll come up with several results.

  1. I’d want to have a periscope:) The Grand Canyon State is represented by Valerie EBPL [email protected]
  2. I’m curious if it would enough.
  3. 30 would be the lighter of the two options, so I’m thinking of going with that.
  4. (update to include a link) marc DBPL [email protected] Geographical location: Scotland In terms of producing flaws, I believe that installing a window is not much different from installing a ventilation system.
  5. [email protected] d kBPL d kBPL One of our friends owns a REI windowed tent, however the window has fallen away from the canvas and is now in the ground (not sewn in, apparently, just cemented).
  6. He then asked me about other methods of gluing things back together, which is why this topic caught my eye.

That’s why I wanted one for my Big Agnes – after getting used to not being able to see the sky or rain, I’d lament not having one.

For some reason, I didn’t consider marine supplies (maybe because I’d been in the desert for too long.).

It had a pretty large triangular screened “window” (really vents) towards the top of the tent (SMD Refuge), and it had a horizontal overhang that allowed you to see out both sides of the tent.

Please let us know what type of material you end up using and what your initial impressions are of it.

Thank you so much, everyone — Eventually, I’m going to order a piece of marine window material for this project, and I’ll try to remember to publish a photo when it’s ready.

Gauges for plastic film are the polar opposite of gauges for wire and sheet metal.

The 30 gauge PVC is 50% heavier than the 20 gauge PVC, which is a significant difference.

As a result, for PVC film, 30 gauge equals 30 mil.

Here’s an illustration: When it comes to other types of plastic films (as opposed to PVC), gauge is often equivalent to 1/100 mil.

For example, a piece of 30 gauge PVC film is one hundred times thicker than a piece of 30 gauge Mylar, which is one hundred times thicker still.

d kBPL [email protected] is an email address.

I was, in fact, going by wire gauges, on the assumption that they all operated the same.

Most of the time, I have trouble distinguishing between them.

A piece of PVC film of the same size and gauge as the 20 gauge PVC film should weigh around 2.2oz.

A wide range of optically transparent urethanes and ETFE films, as well as polyester and polycarbonate films, are available in thicknesses lower than 20 mil and with sufficient strength.

For example, a sandwich of 6mil urethane on 3mil polyester film would be plenty strong, more UV resistant than PVC, and weigh only 0.75oz per square foot when constructed.

The information was provided solely with the hope that you would find it useful.

Wow, there is a wealth of technical knowledge available!

Considering my needs (a small tent window that is less than 1 square foot in size), I believe 20 gauge marine vinyl will suffice.

Many, many thanks to all who contributed guidance!

Far North.

Since boat windows/canopies are using 20-30 mil, I’d be looking at 10 mil or thinner for a tent application.

(Stamping anchors on things always makes them cost more).

I’d suggest getting a yard of 10-mil and playing with it.

Consider square windows, rectangular, circular, oval.

The vinyl is rated for cracking to 0F, so good for 3-season use.

Or go with the multiple small windows.

I wish, though, that we had a window facing north visible from the master bed.

I’ve been imagining an oval or a round window…just for the esthetics.

I have a suspicion that the clear pvc for boats may have a UV inhibitor in it and the regular fabric shop version doesn’t.

Thanks for that… The pvc at Ace Hardware is used for windows.

Unfortunately for me, I ordered a small piece of marine UV material last night, so I won’t take you up on your offer. Thanks anyway! (And it’s good to know that an old tent window, stored in the garage for many years, is still fully flexible and in good condition…

Materials Used to Make Tents

A tent, one of the most fundamental of human shelters, is often made of fabric or other materials that are stretched over a supporting structure and secured to the ground in some way. Tents, which have been used throughout history by many nomadic peoples, are now most commonly associated with temporary shelters used for camping or other recreational activities. As a result of natural catastrophes or other situations, where buildings have become unusable or unsafe, they might provide a viable option.

Tent Covers and Floors

Tightly woven cotton canvas was traditionally used for tent walls and flooring to keep water out. When lighter, synthetic textiles become available, canvas is being phased out in favor of waterproofed nylon, which is known for its strength, durability, and lightweight properties. Another alternative is rip-stop nylon, which is very resistant to ripping. Polyester is similar to nylon in appearance, but it is more resistant to sun (UV) damage. UV-Tex 5, a more recent synthetic that is quite similar to polyester but has even higher UV protection, is gaining popularity.

Tent Poles, Stakes and Ropes

When designing tent poles and stakes, two important elements are taken into account: strength and weight, with the latter of the two being more important for backpacking applications in particular. A dome tent or cabin tent pole is normally constructed from fiberglass or aluminum, and it is sometimes reinforced with an internal nylon string to aid with shape and stability. Tent pegs are available in a variety of metals, including aluminum, forged steel, and titanium, which are particularly effective in tougher soils.

Alternatively, they can be built of wood or plastic, which is suited for softer or sandier terrain. A nylon or polyester/cotton/nylon combination is used to make tent ropes (guylines), which are commonly used for camping.

Tent Closures and Windows

Tent openings are kept together with zippers, which are normally nylon but are occasionally made of metal (nickel). Velcro tape can be used to close windows and tiny flaps, as well as to secure other items. It is common practice to use small fabric ties (either synthetic or canvas) to assist fasten these smaller components of a tent as well. No-see-um mosquito netting, which is made of fire-retardant polyester and allows air to pass through while blocking insects, is commonly used as window material.

Marmot Tent – Repairing Polyurethane Windows

You’ve probably heard the expression “All good things must come to an end”? Unfortunately, this was the case with my Marmot Limelight 3 polyurethane windows, which were installed in 2010. Her first appearance was in May of 2010. In the course of tearing down a recent camp, I observed that the glue around my tear drop shaped windows had become yellow, flaked, and was deteriorating. None of these things gave me the confidence to continue using the fly, so when we returned to town, we raced to REI to stock up on supplies.

  1. My six-year-old tent was complimented by a woman working in customer service as we walked into REI with a pouty expression in stow.
  2. Thank you very much!
  3. She informed me that this particular design had been discontinued since there were known difficulties with the sealant failing over time.
  4. Instead of exchanging our tent, she recommended that we try regluing the windows.
  5. Fortunately, I was able to locate some instructions, but this was my kid that we were discussing.
  6. I couldn’t just get into this project without thinking about it beforehand!
  7. Here’s what I’ve got: Yellowing of the adhesive is a problem.

Score!

I did the procedure on top of a cutting mat in order to avoid adhesive flakes from accumulating on the ground (found in the sewing section of craft stores) Taking the window out of the frame Seam Grip is called to the rescue.

It was surprisingly peaceful, despite the fact that it was precise.

Exceptionally gratifying I used 70% Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol to wipe up the glass and the tent to make sure they were suitable for glue before proceeding.

When you’re ready to glue, make sure you’re in a well-ventilated location with a fan running, since the scent will be overwhelming otherwise.

I started with the tip and worked my way around the dome end, flattening out the sides as I went.

My first step was to carefully align a tiny portion of the pre-existing seam in the centre.

See also:  How To Build The Tent In Playhut

There are two little brushes included with the sealant package, and I used the smaller of the two to paint the adhesive onto the surface.

I simply used the adhesive to adhere the tent to the ground.

As soon as I had my tent/window in position, I stacked books on top of a piece of wood I had placed over the top of the tent/window.

(It should be noted that the wood came off fairly smoothly, but I had to remove the cutting pad.) After a day or so, I was surprised to see a window on my tent that I had never seen before.

If you have any areas that are sticky, you can sprinkle baby powder on them (this works for your fingers as well, as I can personally attest).

Correct; it has to be corrected. I repeated the process on the second window, and both appear to be in excellent condition. We are going on a trip in two weeks, and it will be her first time using Windows 2.0 during that trip. We wish you the best of luck! ♥ -Mars

verified purchaseReviewed in the United States on September 9, 2017Verified Purchase I wrote a review just after using it for the first time, then when I tried to use it for the second time, one of the poles bent at one end, causing the fiberglass to crumble. After that, I fiddled with it every time I got dressed, losing one or two inches at a time. As a result, my engineering mind went to the hardware shop to look for a substitute for the poles in question. I had considered using an old fishing pole, but because of the way it tapers, I was concerned it wouldn’t be strong enough, so I went to Home Depot instead.

  1. I brought it home and have fallen in love with this product all over again.

I haven’t used it for an extended period of time yet, but it appears to be well-made, and I am looking forward to putting it to use.

Purchase that has been verified The product is well-made, and the elastic banding sewn onto the outer border allows it to hold onto your door.

It was necessary for me to acquire two, one for the left door and another for the right door.

There is cross ventilation!

Yes, it was tough to bend the poles, but it was not impossible.

However, between the hours of 8:00 a.m.

The fiberglass pole on the left entrance was the first to fail.

The effect is similar to having an 11-hour self-destruct sequence programmed into them.

It would be fantastic if it were to work.

I agree with many of the other reviews who have stated that the poles are too hard to be used effectively in the ventilation cover.

In order to prevent rips in the fabric, I used leftover 1/2″ irrigation tubing (available at home improvement stores) that I cut to the appropriate length and covered with a bit silver duct tape to prevent fraying of the cloth.

It won’t fit in the backpack, but because you were already packing other items for your camping trip, it wouldn’t be a great issue to include it on your packing list.

The product was reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2017 and was verified as a purchase.

Because you absolutely require two for adequate ventilation, item did not receive a perfect five-star rating.

To obtain some airflow, I had to turn on the car vents for a good ten minutes at a time.

The product was reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2018 and was verified to be authentic.

Even if you wanted to, you couldn’t zip down the mesh since the poles were too rigid and they weren’t joined together.

They have taken note of the feedback since they are far better than they were previously.

I would suggest it to anybody looking for a short and simple weekend escape.

It appears to be of high quality and performs as described!

It is possible that closing the door on it will cause the fabric to deteriorate over time.

It also requires that you unlock the side doors from the inside, or that you unzip both windows and stretch your hand down to the handle, after it is turned on.

Also, like a real tent, it would be beneficial if the screen was on the outside and the solid fabric was on the inside, so that you could Barton up from the inside without letting mosquitoes in.

I was worried that they wouldn’t fit the sliding doors, but they do really fit well. I was pleasantly delighted to see that both the nylon and the screen can be unzipped. I really like the connected bag for transporting and storing the screens.

When you’re traveling and don’t want to deal with setting up a tent, this is a great option. It’s also great if you’re just getting to the point in your lives where sleeping on the ground no longer appeals to you, but don’t want to switch to a full trailer because that means you’ll have to use less private trailer sites. We also do a lot of traveling, so this is SO much simpler than setting up the tent at suppertime just to break it all down the next morning in order to depart early in the morning the next day.

We couldn’t figure out what was wrong because the weather was perfect.

As of right now, we’re going to presume that we received a lemon package.

We received a couple fresh batches of poles yesterday, and we are still pleased with our purchase for the time being.

NOTE: I’ve seen that many other people are experiencing the same problem with poles breaking as I was, so when I contacted roadie, they sent me what I think to be a prototype of their newest pole to try out.

Overall, I’m pleased.

Even with the windows half-way open, the car remained dry.

The second night brought us yet another rainstorm, but this time it was a little more strong, complete with thunderstorms.

It was necessary for me to wait until the rain had ceased before reopening the windows.

The fit is extremely snug.

Otherwise, it will be a hassle.

On March 8, 2020, a review was conducted in Canada.

They work perfectly.

A particularly chilly night of winter camping coupled with a “friendly” visit from a local Coyote prompted us to “upgrade” from tent camping to a more comfortable vehicle.

If you can’t afford a trailer or RV, but yet want the extra comfort and security that tents can’t give, this is a perfect solution for your family.

Despite the fact that our minivan’s doors are rather large, we had no issues with the fit or quality.

The integrated storage pouch is a huge plus, as it makes it extremely convenient to store items. It will be difficult to remember why you ever went tent camping before you use the Roadie! OUTSTANDING PRODUCT!

5.0 stars out of 5 for this product The tent is a fair size and looks beautiful. On July 3, 2020, the United States will conduct a review. First and foremost, the sheer enormity of this tent is mind-boggling. Tall and roomy, this building is ideal for a family or for those who need a place to relax while it’s pouring. Just put it up in my living room before taking it camping; it’s a simple setup that needs no work. It has six poles, one for each corner and an X in the center for the ceiling. The poles appear to be quite durable.

  1. UPDATE!
  2. This tent is the right size, and put up was a breeze the second time around, taking only a few minutes at most.
  3. The floor remained completely dry, which was fantastic!
  4. Overall, I believe you will not find a nicer tent for that price anywhere else!

I’ll update my evaluation once I’ve gone camping at the end of the month to see how well it works.

My rating has been raised to five stars as a result of this.

There was no way I was going to risk getting wet after two strong downpours, which is why the tarp is up yet there is absolutely no water inside that tent!

The main drawback is getting used to the zipper; it takes some delicacy to shut it without the zipper shield getting trapped when the zipper shield reverses direction.

Purchase that has been verified Over the weekend, I made use of this tent.

It easily accommodated my family of four, which included two queen-sized air mattresses.

I’ve already suggested this tent to a couple of my friends and family members who have expressed interest.

I can get up and walk about or change clothes since it has enough room for everything I need for two children as well as myself.

The bad news is that the building quality is poor.

Yikes.

Despite the fact that the two gear storage nets on the side walls have been taped together, they are not watertight.

A little amount of water also trickled into my clothing bag at the foot of the bed, which was leaking at the seam of the tiebacks/toggles at each of the windows (good thing I double bag clothes).

Many reviews have expressed satisfaction, so it’s possible that I’ve been the unlucky beneficiary of a quality control failure.

Purchase was confirmed in gray color.

He was able to stand up and walk about in it.

There are no videos for the setup.

Feel sorry for the unfortunate individual who is lacking one.

It only took the two of us 30 minutes, and we are seasoned tent campers.

It’s difficult to zip, and it gets caught at the junction of the two sections of the door when you try.

Windproofing is definitely not an option!

I’m going to return this tent.

Verified Purchase in the color orange The tent arrived in the mail yesterday.

In less than ten minutes, my son and I had the tent up and running.

The second time around, I believe it is fair to expect to spend roughly 5 minutes setting up.

A screen is also installed on the door to allow for better air movement.

The rain fly is roughly a foot below the screen on the roof, which provides some protection.

It includes a roof mesh attachment on the inside, which may be used to keep objects to dry.

All of the screen coverings have the ability to be rolled up.

There are two zippers on the door.

I’m confident that once you employ the tent stakes, everything will go more smoothly.

Extra space in the tent’s corner is ideal for storing soiled clothes and storing other belongings.

According to the manufacturer, this 6 person tent should perform well in the rain.

**********UPDATE ********** My kid and I had helped put up the tent.

We were at Mono Village, which is located in Bridgeport, California.

We stayed for a week in the area.

The tent did not have any leaks at any point.

I did had the tentfly firmly in place.

Inside, there is plenty of airflow.

5.0 stars out of 5 for this product Excellent Tent!

It’s simple to set up!

On April 20, 2021, a review will be conducted in the United States.

The UNP 2 person tent exceeded my expectations, so much so that I purchased their 6 person tent to serve as a base camp while the 2 person tent would be utilized for trekking.

It took us around 4 minutes to put everything away.

The tent has only one door, which is located in the front.

It contains a total of 5 screens, which allows for extremely efficient air movement.

It should provide adequate protection from the rain.

The tent also features two side pockets that are approximately 2 feet above the ground.

If you prefer to keep the entrance open, it may easily be rolled up and secured to the tent with a bungee cord.

They function in the same way as any other tent.

The tent can accommodate up to 6 people, however it is PERFECT for 2-3 people.

The material appears to be of sufficient strength.

Once summer arrives, I’ll provide an update after putting it through its paces in the Sierra Nevadas.

Very simple to put up.

To be more specific, the Twin Lakes.

We received a little rain and thunder, but nothing major.

When the wind picked up, the tent held up well.

The tent has exceeded my expectations.

There is no condensation on the interior.

Blue is the color of choice.

The entire process, from setting it up in the backyard to taking it down (including the rain flap) took me less than an hour.

It appears to be composed of high-quality materials and has a lot of room.

So far, I’ve given it a five-star rating, and in about a week, when I take it on a two-night camping trip, I’ll revise that rating.

5.0 stars out of 5 for this product The room is enormous, and the setup is quite simple.

So far, this tent has left a positive impression on me.

I’d rate this tent as the second most straightforward to erect of any tent I’ve ever used.

I have only one complaint about the rain fly, which fits quite tightly and was a little difficult to put on by myself.

So far, I’ve given it a five-star rating, and in about a week, when I take it on a two-night camping trip, I’ll revise that rating. PS -In the shot, you can see my tarp serving as a front porch; however, that tarp is not included with the tent purchase. The photographs in this review

5.0 stars out of 5 for this product THIS TENT WAS EASY TO SET UP, AND MY WIFE HOLLY DID IT ALL BY HERSELF FROM THE BOTTOM UP ON THIS TENT! On June 24, 2021, the Canadian government will review the document. Gray is the predominant color. Purchase that has been verified SINGLE PROBLEM IS ONE POLE THAT SHOULD BE REMOVED, NOW STICK INTO THE NEXT! WE WERE unable to separate them, and it was necessary to bring them together as well. That took place between June 16th and June 23rd. WHILE THE NEW TENT IS UP, THE WEATHER GUARD ON THE RIPPER CAN BE CAUGHT ON THE DOOR OR UNRIPPER WHEN YOU RIP IT.

THE POLE IS STILL SICK TOGETHER, AND IT HAS BEEN SICK FOR LONGER THAN USUAL NOW FOR, THE GRAY POLE BAG!
