Reasons to avoid

Regular winding is required; the light is not warm; and the brightness is restricted. Have you ever had a momentary idea about what you’d do if the world ended tomorrow (or, failing that, if the electricity went out)? A wind-up lantern requires no batteries and instead operates on the power of your muscles, making it an excellent choice not just for emergencies, but also for camping vacations and other outdoor experiences when you will not be able to charge your electronic equipment. Our testing revealed that the Mountain Warehouse lantern has three brightness levels and emits up to 45 lumens of light, which we found to be more than adequate to illuminate any size tent.

In either case, opting for a hand-cranked lantern is highly recommended due to the absence of battery hassle and the fact that it is an outstanding environmentally responsible alternative.

There is a slight disappointment in not having a slightly warmer light coming from the lantern, but it is still a fantastic choice for vehicle campers and a reliable backup lantern for the house.

It’s hard to go wrong with Vango’s Lunar 250 Eco camping light if you’re looking for a basic and durable camping lantern for casual camping vacations with family or friends. The eco in the name refers to the fact that this lantern may be recharged in sunlight, and if it’s a cloudy day, it can also be connected to a computer through USB to charge from a power source. Once charged, the Lunar 250 can produce a maximum brightness of 250 lumens, which is sufficient to illuminate some of the surrounding terrain if necessary.

The major drawback is that the lantern’s runtime was only 3–5 hours during testing, which means you’ll have to recharge it frequently, making it less helpful for multi-day vacations if you don’t have access to power and the sun decides to hide.

What to look for when buying the best camping lanterns

There are many other types of illumination solutions available, with lanterns, headlamps, and flashlights all vying for your attention amongst the many other options. However, while headlamps are excellent for use on the path and, together with flashlights, are excellent for providing a focused beam, a lantern is probably your best option for lighting up a bigger space, such as a large tent or your cooking area in the evening or at night. The following are some of the elements you should take into consideration while selecting the finest camping light for your needs and requirements.

Design

The best camping lanterns are available in a variety of forms and sizes, ranging from conventional storm lamps to minimalist orb and square-shaped lights. What style you choose is entirely up to you – the only thing we’d recommend paying close attention to is weight and packing convenience. For those who are wild campers or bikepackers, the answer is straightforward: you’ll want a light that’s as tiny and lightweight as possible in order to avoid it taking up too much space in your pack. We’ve included lanterns in our round-up that weigh less than 100g and are small enough to carry in your pocket, so you’re protected there as well as everywhere else.

Lumens

Lanterns and flashlights with either LED or Xenon bulbs are available on the market, and we found that both performed well in our tests. The most important factor to consider is the quantity of lumens they release – for a lantern that you may wish to use as a flashlight, we recommend going beyond 150 lumens for enough brightness. 100 lumens should be more than plenty for lighting a family tent, a bonfire, or even providing a small amount of reading light in a hammock in the great outdoors. The fact that many of the finest camping lights can be dimmed adds to their convenience in terms of regulating ambient light.

Charging

Charging camping lanterns may be accomplished in a variety of methods – some require batteries, while others can be recharged through USB, while others are solar-powered, and yet others can be manually operated. It all comes down to how far you want to go into the wilderness on your camping vacations and which charging solution is ideal for you. Whether you’re camping for a night or two or need a place to charge your electronics, a USB lantern is an excellent solution (and is a more eco-friendly choice than using batteries).

Having said that, battery-powered lanterns are also a fantastic choice for wild campers and wilderness expeditions, provided you have a large supply of replacement batteries on hand (we prefer to use rechargeable batteries when possible).
