This season, size does important in the fashion world — but not in the way you may expect. With temperatures expected to hit the 20s in the United Kingdom next week, a new larger-than-life dress form is looming on the horizon, attempting to take advantage of the pleasant weather conditions. The cut is not particular, but the tent dress, as it is more often known, is distinguished by three characteristics: its size (it is quite broad), its shapelessness (there is no waist), and the fabric used (natural, such as linen, cotton or calico).
The Met Gala, which took place last week, served as an example, with Lady Gaga and Gwyneth Paltrow ditching the usual flesh flashing for silhouettes with truly impressive girth.
Briefly said, it’s summer attire that’s geared toward women, or at least that’s the intention.
GC Images courtesy of Mark R Milan Photographic Services In the words of Susanna Cordner, a senior research researcher at the London College of Fashion who is interested in “fashions that allow women to take up space in public” – otherwise known as womanspreading – “you might argue that this is a new sort of power dressing.” The way clothes feel is important as well, she explains.
When this style first appeared on the fashion scene in 2013, the New York Times dubbed it the “sheltering dress.” Ditte Reffstrup, creative director of the Danish brand Ganni, which was responsible for bringing it to the high street, describes it as “a loud silhouette.” The internet has coined the term “baggy con” to describe this look.
Professor of cultural studies Elizabeth Kutesko believes that this reframing is “simplistic, or at the very least unconvincing.” When it comes to its capaciousness, she notes, “it’s less a fascinating and intellectual play on space between the body and the cloth than it is a pleasant and breezy option in warmer climates.” One example of the trend is this Zara flower print dress (£39.99), which is available in several colors.
Photograph courtesy of Zara Instead, Kutesko cites Dior’s Trapeze collection from 1958, which she describes as “a fluid liberation of the body from the cinched waist popular at the time,” as well as the designers Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto, who designed clothes in the 1980s that “didn’t fit clothing to the body, but rewrote the body through fashion, calling for a new perception of beauty that many women truly did find empowering.” When it comes to body shape, Kutesko believes that being able to play with clothes rather than hiding it is essential, however she acknowledges that it is difficult to generalize because the history of western European design has been so intimately related to emphasizing the feminine form for centuries.
Nonetheless, it is an intriguing turning point in the conflict between modern fashion and “attractiveness.” That is, without a doubt, the goal of the designers who created the gowns.
In agreement with this, Reffstrup says, “I do not believe that displaying flesh is required in order to be seductive.
In the words of Reffstrup, “Dresses aren’t simply for dressing up.” She believes that loose-fitting dresses worn in the heat are descended from the same evolutionary heritage asfleeces and sneakers. For once, it appears that fashion has been able to co-opt the realm of pragmatism.
Everyone on the Stylist fashion team just turned up to work in this dress
Fashion insiders have adopted tent dresses as a regular item in their wardrobe, and it’s not just because they’re the most convenient thing to have in your closet. As is true with many great things, Copenhagen Fashion Week was the birthplace of the dress trend that has caught the mind of fashion editors all summer long this season. And, when the temperatures increase (again) this week, we are even more enthusiastic than ever about the prospect. Tent dresses are the fashion trend in question.
A colossal, billowing gown that envelops your entire body from head to foot.
The result will be not just something easy to put on, but also something that will truly be pleasant in this hot and humid weather.
