The North Face and R. Buckminster Fuller Special Connection – Part 2

On October 6th, 1975, the first Oval intention rolled off the sewing room floor and into the world. A brief ceremony (see photo) was held in which Hap, Bob Gillis, Mark, Dan Castner, Helen Li, Hisako Haskins, and the sewing machine operators in the tent portion were all there and participated. In order to officially christen the tent, I sprinkled freeze dried chocolate ice cream on the gold and tan triangulated skin of the structure. It was obvious that we were on to something amazing. The Epistemic Tent is featured in the TNF Catalogue for the autumn 1975 season, accompanied with a statement from SYNERGETICS.

Early Praise for the O.I.

It is, without a question, the greatest dome design now available, and that by a long shot. Despite the fact that I haven’t compiled all of the data yet, I am pretty positive that it will be designated as the most impressive tent of the entire group. It sat on the ice for a month, exposed to the elements (wind and snow).

To obtain the necessary geodesic shape, they devised a system of robust, flexible aluminum shafts that could slide through rings on the tent’s surface. This was written about by John Christensen in the “Wisconsin Engineer” in May 1976.

Asking RBF for Permission

After using a passage from Bucky’s recently published book, SYNERGETICS, sub-titled, Explorations in the Geometry of Thinking, copyright 1975, in our Fall 1975 catalogue, I felt it would be a good idea to contact him to ask for permission. Please have a look at Bucky’s letter from December 4th, 1975. Moreover, in that letter, I promised to meet him anyplace on the West Coast to show him the tent on behalf of TNF and to provide him with an official invitation. After receiving his “I am pleased.” letter, which was followed by a visit with him in his Santa Monica hotel room on January 14, 1976, the process was completed.

When Mark and I talked after the meeting, he mentioned how startled he was to discover RBF alone in a hotel room with no assistant, no entourage, and no one else except Bucky.

According to Bucky’s proverb, “ideas are simple, innovations are difficult, and mass manufacturing the invention is the most difficult of all.” While Jim and I were sitting at the table in his room, after signing both Jim’s and my copies of SYNERGETICS, he rapidly sketched the following picture, stating that the four frequency tension tent he was sketching was one that he wanted us to build.

The Now House

Although we were unable to complete the Tensegrity Tent, the January meeting resulted in an offer from Bucky to include TNF’s down sleeping bags in his exhibition, The Now House, in Vancouver, British Columbia, as part of the United Nations “Habitat” – World Conference on Human Settlements. In a letter to Hap dated March 8th, 1976, Bucky stated: “Our show will be an operational demonstration of a self-sufficient living unit for a family of four.” Two geodesic domes with a diameter of fourteen feet will be used to offer a protective covering.

The O.I. was clearly displayed and was seen by a large number of people. For one of Bucky’s numerous interviews, the tent’s aesthetic appeal served as an excellent background.

World Games Workshop

Jim and I drove his BMW 2002ii non-stop from Berkeley to Philadelphia to attend the World Game Workshop a few weeks after the Now House premiered in Berkeley. Beginning on June 27th and running until July 16th 1976, the workshop was open to the public. In recognition of Tony Gwilliam’s involvement with The Now House, we were allowed to take the stage during one of the plenary sessions to deliver the O.I. After spending a long time trying to piece together this tale of the Fuller and TNF link, I stumbled uncovered a cassette recording hidden in the back of a file cabinet drawer titled “Oval History.” Consequently, I transcribed the recording last week, forty years after it was first recorded.

After making a few testimonial remarks, Jim flipped the completed tent upside down and tossed it into the audience, where it was immediately transferred from one person to another over the heads of the ecstatic audience.

The second step in the TNF/RBF connection was made during a Bucky Fuller weekend retreat at the Pajaro Dunes Resort in Northern California in 1998. It was in April of 1977 that this unprecedented encounter took place. Bucky requested something from me at that encounter, and it was this request that resulted in his first visit to TNF in October of that year. What he requested will be discussed in greater detail in Part 3 of this narrative.
