What Is Coleman Tent Dark Room Technology

Coleman Dark Room Sundome 6 Review

Tip: Never, ever pull your tent across the ground; otherwise, you run the danger of creating countless tiny holes in the ground. If you did, don’t be alarmed; the fabric may be simply resealed.

Performance Comparison

Even if the sun is shining outside, you wouldn’t know it inside the Sundome thanks to Dark Room Technology. Rick Baraff provided the photograph. When the sun is out, you wouldn’t really notice it inside the Sundome, thanks to Dark Room Technology. Rick Baraff provided the photograph.

Space and Comfort

At 100 square feet of floor space, it can rival with any other 6-person tent we’ve tested in terms of overall size and comfort. However, because this is a true dome tent, the headroom decreases as you walk from the center to the edges, from a maximum height of 6’0″ to a minimum height of 5’10”. As a result, it will be quite difficult to fit six adult individuals into the space, especially given there is only one door (as opposed to two on the majority of the others in our review). Mom, dad, and two or three children will certainly feel at ease at the Sundome.

  • However, even with the generous 100 square feet of floor area, it’s best to limit the number of people to four, especially because there is no vestibule for gear or supplies, which means they will have to share the space.
  • Rick Baraff provided the photograph.

  • On the inside, there are just four (one on each side) compartments that are small and compact.
  • However, as we shall discuss more below, this is a more budget-friendly tent, and as a result, the facilities will be limited.

The exact method of measuring this is unclear because different conditions (direct sun, leafy light, etc.) would appear to affect the measurement, but at 9:30 a.m.

Even in direct sunlight during noon, it effectively filters the vast majority of light.

Note that the illumination comes from the camera flash.

“>The Sundome’s interior is unadorned and blacked out (with a fly on it).

Please keep in mind that the light comes from the camera flash.

Besides being energy efficient, Coleman’s Dark Room technology has another major advantage: by filtering out light rays, it lowers the temperature within the room.

As the sun moves across the sky, some heat may ultimately get through, but what the Sundomedoes accomplish is reduce the amount of heat that reaches your face in the morning or the rays that start to scorch your sleeping bag much too early after a late night of ghost stories and cervezas.

Photo courtesy of Rick Baraff”>From the cave-like darkness of the Coleman Sundome, a view out the front door.

Aside from the fact that it is large and has a Dark Room feature, there isn’t much more to say about this tent that is positive.

Depending on where the sun is in the sky, this will provide you with a paltry foot or so of shade, and it will also prevent a few raindrops from penetrating your window when it rains.

That isn’t necessarily a dig at the tent, though it might be.

A great deal, just off the top of my head.

Rick Baraff provided the photograph.

The Coleman Sundome’s mesh ceiling panels extend all the way to the apex, providing excellent vistas as well as a refreshing breeze.

That’s enough about the darkness.

When the fly is removed, there is lots of mesh packed into the tent body, providing broad and lofty vistas as well as delightful breezes when the fly is not in use.

The Coleman Sundome 6P has a lot of mesh on the top, which allows for excellent views of the sky even when the fly is not attached.

Rick Baraff provided the photograph. Despite the fact that there is a lot of mesh on the Coleman Sundome 6P’s top, the sky views are rather pleasant without the fly. Rick Baraff provided the photograph.

Weather Resistance

The Sundome 6’s rainfly performs admirably for a tent that is priced at less than $100. We are convinced that you will remain dry even if there is a mild or passing downpour. But if you’re expecting a whole day of rain or the type of storm that prompts people to start building arks, we might have some reservations about the forecast. Having said that, it does have a thick bathtub-style floor to block water from seeping in from below (bathtub style meaning the panel of material that makes up the floor wraps up the walls and joins the rest of the tent well above the ground where often seams can leak).

All seams are taped to ensure that there is no leaking at the stitching sites.

Despite the fact that these seams appear to be robust and performed admirably during our testing, we have noticed concerns of leaky seams in other web evaluations.

Even though Coleman could improve their overall quality (the fiberglass poles are a little creaky, and a number of people have reported that the corner stake points have ripped off, resulting in potential structure failure because you need these to get the poles to tension), it’s a Best Buy in no small part because of its affordable price point.

Ease of Set-Up

When it comes to set-up and take-down, it doesn’t get much easier than the Sundome. There are two poles crisscrossed between two sleeves in this design, which has been around for a long time. Because the connections that join the pole sections are a little thick, they might become caught when they are being inserted into the sleeves, which can create a minor delay in the setup process. The poles are then connected to the stake points using what appears to be a very old-school “pin-and-ring” technique, in which you push a metal pin (linked to a metal ring that is sewed into the tent corner) into the open end of the pole, so “securing” it in place, into the tent corner.

  1. Observe that the majority of other recent models of tents have opted for more secure interfaces, which frequently include insertion of the metal-tipped end of the pole into an eyelet, after which it firmly “clicks” into place.
  2. Rick Baraff provided the photograph.
  3. Rick Baraff provided the photograph.
  4. This also helps you understand how to correctly orient the fly so that you don’t end up with a ring-around-the-rosie when attempting to get it squared up.

Setup is a simple and quick job that can be completed by one person. Rick Baraff provided the photograph. “>Setup is a one-person job that is quick and simple. Rick Baraff provided the photograph.

Durability

This is a low-priced tent. If it were a top-of-the-line tent — if the price were double or treble what it is — we may be a little harsher in our assessment, but the quality of theSundomeis rather outstanding, if not remarkable, for the price. If you’re a frequent camper, do you think this will be the final tent you ever purchase? No way in hell. Nonetheless, as long as you don’t punish it too much, store it correctly, and do even a minimal amount of cleaning and care, you should be able to enjoy many dark and comfortable nights of sleep in this dark chamber.

  1. When you hear the fiberglass poles groan under stress, it might make even the most hardened camper shudder a little bit (as it did us).
  2. If aluminum is bent, it can at the very least be re-bent, however fiberglass can reach a complete failure point and break or shatter if bent to an extreme degree.
  3. Please keep a watch on your children, as they may be tempted to run off with one of the poles in order to see if they can jump across the water.
  4. Rick Baraff provided the photograph.
  5. Rick Baraff provided the photograph.

Packed Size

When it comes to packed size, the most important factors to consider are the total weight, the bulkiness, the ease or awkwardness with which the tent may be carried, and the amount of difficulty in repacking the tent into its carry sack or bag. The Sundome is not going to be considered for a thru-hike on the Pacific Crest Trail, but it is far from being too heavy or large for this kind of trek. There are two handles on the case, which is a modestly-sized, robust, rectangular zippered item with a wonderful extendable part on the bottom that can be unzipped to provide extra space.

However, you’ll have to do a good job of sucking the air out of the tent in order to get it back into the case, but if you fold it such that the door or a window enables the air to escape fast, this shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

The Coleman Sundome is transported in an extendable carry case. Rick Baraff provided the photograph. “>The Coleman Sundome is transported in an extendable carry box. Rick Baraff provided the photograph.

Value

Aside from the allure of the darkroom technology, this is the place where theSundomewill meet some new people. If you’re looking to spend a little extra money on all of the other things that come with camping (we recommend beer, for example), this is undoubtedly one of the finest value tents we’ve ever evaluated. It lacks the functionality and long-term durability of higher-end versions, but it does not carry the higher-end price tag, which is a bonus. The Sundome is an excellent deal for weekend warriors on a tight budget, as well as those who prefer to return to the same sunny, weather-friendly destination or event year after year.

Conclusion

It is a completely acceptable price for the Coleman Dark Room Sundome 6, which is a basic dome tent with a very specialized, precise, and useful function at a very affordable price. The fact that this is an excellent budget choice means that you won’t have to worry about it while you’re camping with kids, at a concert or at the beach, or in a variety of other settings that can cause some concern with more costly tents. And if the thought of the sun beaming in your eyes while you’re trying to sleep makes you nervous, this Best Buy Winner will become your new best friend.

Coleman Sundome 4 Person Tent Review – Dark Room Tent Model

Dean Anderson’s blog was last updated on June 5, 2019. Despite the fact that camping is a pleasant and unique outdoor experience that can be enjoyed by individuals of all ages and backgrounds, there are a few of things that might annoy first-time campers who are unfamiliar with the activity. One such difficulty is that of temperature control. Camping may be a hot and humid experience during the summer months in many regions of the United States, so it’s necessary to consider measures to lower your body temperature in order to make your surroundings more pleasant.

According on where you camp, a low-cost tent may allow in much too much sunlight, forcing you to wake up as soon as the sun begins to rise.

It is possible for your tent to heat up and allow daylight to enter earlier than you would expect.

This particular model contains dark room technology, and it is this component that will be the primary focus of our evaluation.

Sundome Tents have been reviewed previously, including the conventional four-person type as well as the three-person and six-person variants. Also, if you’re new to blackout tents, be sure to check out our whole buying guide.

Why get a blackout tent?

Tents with blackout curtains are intended to prevent sunlight out of the tent. This helps to keep the interior cool while also blocking out the sun, allowing you to sleep in if you like and enjoy yourself rather than having to struggle with the bright sunshine. Generally speaking, while shopping for a blackout tent, you are seeking for the same things that you would look for when looking for a standard tent. This implies that it must be the appropriate size for you, it must be waterproof, it must be reasonably simple to construct and disassemble, and it must be portable enough to transport with you when it is packed.

What we liked

The Coleman Sundome Tent checks all of these boxes and is large enough to accommodate four people, however four large adults may be a stretch in this case. It also comes with all of the necessary setup equipment, as well as plenty of ventilation, which makes it ideal for keeping the heat out throughout the summer. The only thing that distinguishes a dark room tent from a regular tent is the amount of sunlight it can absorb. In addition to being able to hide 90 percent of sunlight, the Coleman Sundome Tent is also promoted as being water resistant.

Lowers the temperature in the tent and effectively keeps bright light out

On the positive side, it does its stated function admirably, which is to reduce the temperature inside while also blocking out strong lights, allowing you to sleep in a bit longer. During the day, the Coleman Sundome maintains a noticeable temperature difference. The Coleman Sundome dark room tent, which may be found within. Keep in mind that because the tent is dark all of the time, you may occasionally have difficulty locating that important piece of equipment you’ve put in your tent. Make sure you have your torch with you at all times.

What we didn’t like

Unfortunately, the poles and stakes appear to be a touch frail in their construction on the negative side. As a result, if you’re really harsh with them, they may sustain some damage, and if you want to use them frequently, you may want to consider investing in a stronger set. An optional tent footprint, which is essential for safeguarding the bottom of your tent, is not included with the purchase of this tent. Despite the fact that this is maybe to be anticipated at this price range. This indicates that you’ll have to make a tiny additional purchase.

An essential add on purchase

Because a footprint protects an important component of your tent and also prevents water from accessing the bottom of the tent, we do not advocate going camping without one. The Coleman is also touted as being able to accommodate four people, however we believe that this is only true if there are two adults and two youngsters in the group.

Try to squeeze four grown individuals into this area and you’ll find yourself with little room to walk about and stretch your legs. Pros

  • Contains all of the essential accessories for putting it up, such as the poles, rain fly, ground anchors, a mat, and the directions for assembling it. It comes packaged in a convenient bag, making it very convenient to transport anywhere
  • Setup is simple, and the directions are simple to follow. There are several extra organizational features, such as mesh storage and a tiny hole for charging electrical gadgets without having to open the tent’s front door. In the tent, there is plenty of ventilation, which makes it a wonderful choice for summer camping when the temperatures can become a bit too high
  • Because it does not come with a tent footprint, you will need to purchase one separately. Although the stakes and poles are lightweight, they do not appear to be of the greatest quality, and they may need to be repaired if you are hard with them. Because of the abundance of ventilation, it may get cold if temperatures dip too much below freezing at night or if the wind picks up speed. This tent is advertised as a four-person tent, however that is a stretch

Conclusion – Do we rate the Coleman Sundome with Dark Room Technology?

For summer camping when temperatures are high and the sun is out for the most of the day, the Coleman Sundome Tent with dark room technology is an excellent choice. It provides good protection from the sun and weather, but it is a little on the tiny side if you are attempting to accommodate the four people that are advertised within. When you’re not bundled up in numerous layers of clothing at night, the room may feel very chilly due to the high amount of airflow. Under a nutshell, this is a great tent that performs admirably in all circumstances.

Two years ago, I took a chance and quit a depressing office job in order to pursue a lifestyle profession that would allow me to combine my passion for the outdoors with my work. To further pursue my interests in outdoor recreation (camping, hiking, and travel), I have started my own little campsite with a buddy outside of Portland, Oregon. Despite the fact that it is for a much smaller sum of money, this has truly been a dream come true, and the running will involve many members of my family and friends.

It takes me a significant amount of time to put up camping equipment for clients and to dispose of the waste items that they leave behind at our campsite.

Consequently, if you want to avoid the duds and spend your money sensibly, you’ve hopefully arrived to the correct location.

Coleman 4-Person Dark Room Skydome Camping Tent Review

With a freestanding construction, this Coleman 4-Person Dark Room Skydome Camping Tent is simple to set up, easy to operate, and extremely economical. It is claimed to block sunlight up to 90 percent. Dark Room Skydome Camping Tent by Coleman for 4 people in a dark room.

Key featuresbenefits

  • Technology for dark rooms
  • Simple to use
  • Extremely steep walls
  • Gear loft included
  • Fiberglass poles
  • Very reasonable pricing

What this is about

This Coleman Skydome 4 Dark Room Tent is a dome-style construction with extremely steep walls, giving it the appearance of a cabin tent in certain ways. They say that it provides 20 percent greater headroom than regular Coleman dome tents, which are currently available. You can see this in the photo below, which displays it without the fly, which illustrates the point. This is the tent without the fly so you can appreciate the steep and straight walls of the structure. For its size, the tent is also extremely tall; the center height is 4 feet 8 inches (142 cm), which is pretty impressive.

  1. Note that the door features a window that is constructed of two layers of mesh and a zippered panel on the inside, which is visible from the outside.
  2. You will not find a vestibule in this building because of the same fantastic characteristic.
  3. This means that you will be able to move about and rotate the tent even after you have added the fly.
  4. The tent is seen from the back side in the photograph below, and you can see that the majority of the tent is completely covered.

The walls underneath the fly are made of the same material as the fly. Take note of the fact that you have a lot of guylines to attach the fly, and that the lower guylines may be positioned such that there is more airflow below the fly. The Skyline 4 tent’s backside is shown here.

Dark rest design

Given that the name of this tent implies something exceptional, black materials were employed in the creation of it. They claim that their Dark Room technology prevents 90 percent of sunlight from entering the room. Coleman is well-known for their dark-rest tents, and you can view theirColeman Carlsbad 4 and also theirColeman Oak Canyon 4tents, both of which are constructed using the same dark rest, dark room, or blackout technology as theirColeman Carlsbad 4tents. Having more sleep in the morning and being able to take a nap throughout the day are two benefits of doing so.

Ventilation

The interior of the tent is dark, so you may not be able to see everything properly in the photographs, but the most of it is made of mesh. Because of this, together with the shallow fly profile generated by the brim poles, you can be certain of always having adequate vertical airflow to allow vapor to escape and condensation to be kept to an absolute bare minimum. Nonetheless, I wish there was a floor vent on the rear side; it’s a shame they haven’t included one here.

Who is it for

What you have here is a summer camping tent that may be used for up to two seasons, depending on the weather conditions. The dark-rest technology is designed to shield you from the harsh brightness of the sun. Although a high fly is not the ideal solution for heavy winds, the manufacturer claims that the tent has been tested to resist gusts of up to 35 mph. You have a complete set of pegs and guylines to secure it and anchor it to the ground, as shown in the illustration. All of the components are included in the package.

  1. When there are four people, you have 56 ft2 (5.2 m2) of interior flooring space, which equates to 14 ft2 (1.3 m2) per person in the event of four occupants.
  2. With a 12.2 kg weight, the tent is on the hefty side when it comes to weight (5.53 kg).
  3. The packaged size is 24.7 x 9.4 x 5.4 inches (63 x 24 x 14 cm), which isn’t too shabby either.
  4. I’ve put it in my list of the finest 4 person car camping tents for your consideration.

Materials

There are several distinctive features in this place. The poles are made of fiberglass, however one of the ends has a plastic ball attached to them. The tent’s front corners, on the other hand, include several little pockets where you may store the ends of the poles, as seen in the illustration below. Design of the poles is unique, as are the corner pockets. This design is comparable to the so-called Quick Corners design seen in several of Kelty’s most current tents, such as the Kelty Wireless Tent 4 and the Kelty Late Start 2 person tent, among others.

One-person pitching is made significantly simpler as a result of this.

There is also a difference between the poles’ opposing ends and ordinary fiberglass poles, as can be seen in the photograph below. Each of the pole’s two ends is distinct, and each of them is attached to the tent in a different way.

The fabric

The manufacturer provides very little information about this product. However, they state that the floor is made of a sturdy and thick material, and that their standard WeatherTec system, which includes welded corners and inverted seams, is used here. This is what you’ll find in practically all of the tents made by this company. In addition to the agear loft, there are a handful of mesh pockets on the walls that may be used to store small objects tidy.

Final thoughts, rating, proscons

In conclusion to this Coleman 4-Person Dark Room Skydome Camping Tent review, I would like to emphasize that what you have here is a combination of I some unique characteristics (pole design and attachment to the tent) and ii) certain feature(s) that this brand is well-known for (such as the dark room) (the dark rest design). When you combine all of this with the unbelievable pricing, you realize that you have an amazing piece for outdoor excursions. The combination of capacity and size is somewhat less striking, but this is typical of the vast majority of tents on the market.

Please review the table below to see how I rated this tent in relation to my standard set of criteria that I use for all of my tents to make comparisons simple:

Coleman Sun Blocking Family Tent, 4-Person

Camping is far more enjoyable when you can share the experience with someone else. A family-size tent, on the other hand, allows you to camp in groups, whether you’re traveling with your in-laws, your spouse and children, your closest pals, or a mix of all of the aforementioned. With tents easily accessible to accommodate two or more families, you can make your camping trip a memorable experience for the entire family. It’s unlikely that you’ll want to spend more than half of your trip putting your tent together.

  1. It’s possible to assemble certain family tents in as little as 60 seconds, especially after you’ve got the hang of it.
  2. Even while some tents claim to be able to accommodate up to 12 people, things can become a bit crowded if you have all of the sleeping bags fully rolled out in front of you.
  3. “It’s critical to get a tent that is large enough to accommodate everyone who will be sleeping in it,” says Shawna Newman, editor-in-chief of Active Weekender and an outdoor and camping specialist.
  4. “Are you going camping with tiny children?
  5. “Are you going camping with teenagers or other adults?” Look for a tent with two doors so that you don’t have to go over a lot of people to get out of the tent.” Your tent will not have air conditioning, and it will get suffocating if you have a large group of people in it.
  6. Some tents are also designed to block off the sun’s rays, making them ideal for people who prefer to take midday naps while on holiday.
  7. Preparation is essential for severe weather, which may include rain and high gusts.

Your tent poles should be able to withstand moderate winds without bending or bending over.

As Newman points out, “it’s also critical to have a tent that is suited for the sort of weather you’ll be camping in with your family.” Using a three-season tent is the most adaptable alternative available on the market, according to the author.

Tents of higher quality will have seams that have already been sealed to keep out the rain.

She also recommends opting for a family tent with plenty of internal storage space, such as pockets and ceiling loops for holding water bottles, candles, and other small items.

“You’ll be investing in something that should last you for many years,” he adds.

Only one rule: practice setting up your tent at home beforehand. “The last thing you want is to be wrestling with it at the campground,” adds Newman.

First and foremost, the tent’s interior is extremely black, thanks to the use of dark room technology. It’s also quite simple to set up! When I first took the tent out of the box, I saw a rip in the fabric, which led me to fear that this tent was not very sturdy.

Exceptional Tent This was purchased as a birthday present for our kid. It is a fantastic tent that is simple to set up and take down. The only flaw was that when I opened it, the polls were ripped right where they were attached. So perhaps I’ll be able to return it and swap it.

  • The tent is outstanding. This was purchased as a birthday gift for our kid. Easy to set up and take down, this tent is excellent value. The only flaw was that when I opened it, the polls were pulled out of the seam where they had been attached. So I’m hoping to be able to return it and exchange it for something else instead.

Simple to assemble, and ideal for sunny weather. I go camping or hiking once a year. I purchased this tent in May of last year, and it served me well last year. After a week of heavy rain, the tent began to leak at three of the corner seams and beneath the mesh window, which was the first time this happened. I’m out of luck when it comes to the product warranty.

It’s well-constructed and really dark on the inside! So far, I’m really enjoying my tent! Because it seldom rains where I live, I can’t comment on the leak-proofing, but the tape appears to be in good condition. Because the tent itself is fully screen below the rainfly, I keep it on all of the time and get up before it starts to heat up the inside of my tent. The frame is robust; even when loaded with large packing blankets and hanging on the sides, it does not bow or lean. I’m relieved to see that at least some companies still take pleasure in their production excellence.

Even though they don’t make them (anything) as they used to, I’m delighted I opted with this tent because of the low price point. Also, SCHEEL’S is fantastic; I wish there was a location near me because I would definitely be purchasing from them in the future!

Does it continue to get colder and darker? Over the Memorial Day weekend, I finally had the opportunity to put my tent to use. I was particularly interested in seeing how it stacked up against our other tent in terms of heat reduction. It turned lovely and warm and sunny all weekend, which allowed me to truly put everything through their paces and compare them. Because I believe that the “dark chamber” component of this tent is the most appealing feature, I will concentrate my attention there.

  • Heat – The internal temperature of this tent is considerably lower than the temperature of our previous tent.
  • ), it does not act as an oven when in the sun and there is no wind, as is the case with most other tents.
  • 2.
  • If you want to be able to sleep in the morning, this tent is for you.
  • If you want to play cards in the tent during the day, you should probably find something better to do instead.
  • 3.
  • The process of setting up the tent was no more difficult than setting up any other tent.
  • Overall, this tent is a definite victory in my book.

Thick, easy to assemble, and suitable for the whole family Okay, so it takes around 10 minutes with children. However, it is a really durable tent. As someone who hasn’t had a new one in some years, seeing the new ideas for how you snake the poles is quite exciting. They successfully identified and eliminated all prior rip and break areas, and the new plastic clips provide a strong sense of security. When I initially read the phrase “poles attached,” I assumed it meant across the entire unit.

Setup is pretty much foolproof for moms.

Because of the dark cover, it is simple to avoid being woken up at the crack of dawn.

Also, that was a simple takedown, and I was amazed that it managed to go back into the bag!
