Make sure the steaming water is directly in front of them, on top of the hot pad, and set it up like this: Remind the patient not to put their hands near the hot pot. (Alternatively, you can pour the boiling water into a dish of room temperature water.) Keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t burn themselves, and stay close by if they’re little. Put their faces directly over the steam (beginning slowly) while bracing their arms on the pot on either side of the pot so they can hold their leaning weight comfortably
  3. Now, wrap a large dish towel over their heads and a little over their shoulders so that the material forms a tent for them to sleep in. The steam can be turned down a little, and the oil vapors can be turned up a little more if the vapors are too strong. They can also modify their head position so that they are comfortable with the amount of heat on their face. Initially, they may choose to keep their eyes closed
  4. They are now within the healing tent, which contains healing steam
  5. The patient should remain inside their healing tent until the steam has stopped, which might take anywhere from 15 minutes to 25 minutes. If my kids don’t want to stay under their tents, I’ve *ahem* enticed them by allowing them to watch a movie on my propped-up phone when they don’t want to cooperate. She had a great time, and for the first time in months, she did not wake up coughing in the middle of the night.

I took her back to Bikram yoga several times, and she was able to get rid of her dry cough for good, at least till the next year.

The cough healed up fast when I returned her to Hot Bikram yoga, but I began to wonder: is there a way to replicate the advantages of the hot yoga at home?

I was curious as to what it was about the yoga that was assisting her in her recovery.

As a result, I resolved to recreate a similar setting in my own house.

We all worked together to construct a fort out of chairs and blankets, and we placed a hot vaporizer inside the fort.

I placed a small portable DVD player inside the steamy fort so that she could sit still and watch a movie while I worked.

I gave her a water bottle filled with electrolyte water so she could keep hydrated, and I asked her to sit in the room for 30 minutes, exactly as she did during the yoga session.

Absolutely, this worked like a charm.

She had a dry, persistent cough, so I used the steam tent cure on her twice a day for a few days until her cough cleared up.
