How To Put Up A Screen Tent

Assembly Instructions for an Ozark Trail Screenhouse

Ozark Trail manufactures hundreds of tents and shelters for campers, beachgoers, and garden loungers, among other uses. Though other shelters mix the tent and screened enclosure principles to provide you with a variety of options for how to use your shelter, the company’s Screenhouse model is exactly what it claims it is – and it also has a tiny carport as well. When putting together the 10-by-13-foot or 12-by-14-foot models, the same assembly instructions will be used. You should be able to relax in the shade in around 15 minutes.

Make a level surface for your screen cloth nearby.

In order to make your center pole the most elevated, place the two joint portions marked “T” on either side of the pole that will serve as your center pole.

Install one “L” joint and one “R” joint on each pole, and then position them such that they accept poles from the direction of the center pole.

  1. Make two poles, each with a part labeled “5” and “5B,” and join them together.
  2. This will serve as a support in the middle of the shelter.
  3. The end of each “4” portion should have the hole pointed downward so that it may be used with the screen at the other end.
  4. Place the screen fabric on top of the skeleton’s roof and use the linked hooks to join each corner to the bottom of each of the skeleton’s poles.
  • Set up the tent where you want it with the o-rings that come with it, and use the guy lines that come with it to give your shelter more permanent wind resistance.

5 Best Screen Tents for Camping Bug-Free in the Great Outdoors

When it comes to camping, bugs are not permitted to attend the festivities.

Fortunately, we offer screen tents, which are one of the most effective ways to keep them away from your party. But, with so many options available, how can you pick the finest screen tents for camping out of the many options available?

What Is a Screen Tent for Camping?

With a few exceptions, a screen tent functions similarly to a regular tent in which you would sleep. Because the walls are see-through, you may take advantage of the benefits of natural vistas without having to worry about pests bothering you. Screen tent canopies are available with a variety of features, including floors and zippered doors. Some are designed to be simple to set up and take down. Others may require a little more time, depending on the pole system that is being used. You might also choose for a screen that provides total covering, shielding you from both rain and mosquitoes.

Benefits of Having a Screen Tent

There are several advantages to using a screen tent, the most obvious of which is that it keeps those undesirable guests out of your hair–quite literally. Another advantage is that it provides weather protection. A summer rainstorm provides a pleasant opportunity to relax outside and enjoy the fresh air while staying out of the sun and out of the rain. Furthermore, it’s a beautiful spot to set up seats and tables for a quiet meeting space that’s protected from the weather. It provides ample shade as well as a comfortable environment.

Best Screen Tents for Camping

When looking for the finest screen tents for camping, consider what will work best for you and your family. In general, you’ll want one that will last you through several camping seasons while also being simple to set up and take down when the time comes. You’ll also want one that’s lightweight, compact enough to store easily, and provides all of the weather and pest protection you’ll want. Many screen tents are compatible with propane fire pits that are adjusted to a low temperature.

What to Look for in a Screen Tent for Camping

No matter if you’re shopping for your first screen tent or replacing one that you currently own, we thought we’d share some of our best suggestions for selecting a screen tent with you.

When looking for the finest screen tent for camping, you’ll want one that is capable of withstanding practically any situation. The process entails unpacking it, putting it together, dealing with the weather, ripping it down, and packing it back up again, time and time again.

Ease of Use/Setup

Look for screen tents that are easy to set up and take down, and that need no more than a few minutes. Not puzzling out intricate screen tents should take up valuable time that could be spent doing something enjoyable or relaxing. As a result, select one that is simple to operate.

Portability and Storage

Because you undoubtedly already have too much stuff, your screen tent should be large enough to accommodate guests while being small enough to store. The fact that it is portable is also an advantage. A tent that comes with a storage bag is more portable and easier to store than a tent that does not.

Size and Weight

Along with mobility, there is a trade-off in terms of size and weight. A screen tent for camping should be large enough to accommodate six persons while yet weighing less than 40 pounds.

It will be one of the finest screen tents for camping if it can keep its size and weight to a minimum. Tip: Generally speaking, “fast set up” tents are on the heavier side of the spectrum.

Doors, Walls, and Floors

Doorways, walls, and a floor are required if you want to effectively keep those pests out and away from your party. Bugs are small and can creep beneath virtually anything, so with the help of the tips above, you can create a beautiful outdoor place that is free of bugs. The best screen tents for camping will include wall panels that will block the wind and provide a comfortable, bug-free environment for you to relax in while you’re out camping.

Clam Quick-Set Screen Tent: Why You Need One and Which to Buy

Please see our disclaimer for additional information on whether or not this content contains paid links. One of the most often asked questions by novice RVers is what goods they absolutely must have in order to get started. This is a difficult issue to answer because everyone’s requirements and travel preferences are different. Having said that, we did make an attempt to provide an answer to that query in a prior piece. Of course, there will come a point when you have managed to amass all of the necessary items.

Clam Quick-Set Shelters are an excellent solution for a large number of RVers in this situation.

As part of this discussion, we will address some frequently asked questions concerning these canopy tent shelters, as well as the various varieties of Clam pop-up tents available.

Why You Need a Screen Tent

First and foremost, let’s discuss why you would desire a screen tent home if you’re a full-time RVer. There are a number of compelling reasons to devote the necessary time and resources to one of these outdoor canopy tent shelters, and we’ve included some of our favorites below.

Escape the Sun

If you’ve ever camped at a site with little to no shade, you know how frustrating it can be to be unable to get away from the sun while enjoying time in the great outdoors. When you’re on a sandy beach, in an open field, or even just hanging out in a parking lot, you may benefit from a pop-up screen tent, which provides shade and protection.

Keep Bugs Away

Bugs are just another inconvenience that RVers have to deal with on a regular basis. Because we tend to spend more time outside, mosquitoes, no-see-ums, horse flies, and other biting insects are an especially bothersome annoyance in the summer.

When you camp in a screen tent, you will be protected from bugs since the mesh will act as a barrier between you and the pests. Of course, if you want to be protected from even the tiniest of bugs, you’ll want to make sure the mesh is thin enough to keep them out of your home.

Expand Your Home

RVs are quite compact living quarters. There’s no getting past the reality that apartments are small, and they seem much smaller when you’re living in one with children. The good news is that there are several strategies for spreading out and ensuring that everyone has a certain amount of personal space. One of our favorite methods for accomplishing this is to construct a screen tent home. A tent loaded with comfortable furniture may be used as an office space, school room, reading nook, or play area, and it allows you to extend your tiny house without having to purchase a larger vehicle or a larger trailer.

Gather with Friends

When it comes to events, a pop-up canopy tent may be really beneficial. For those of you who enjoy entertaining guests at your home, you’ve undoubtedly already experienced how difficult it is to fit another family into your RV. Instead of a traditional dining table, why not use a screen tent? With plenty of space for everyone and no need to worry about tidying up your itty tiny house before friends come, you can relax and enjoy the festivities.

Benefits of a Quick-Set Shelter by Clam

All of the above-mentioned advantages are really beneficial. Having said that, there’s really no reason why they couldn’t be obtained from a retailer such as Walmart, Costco, or Coleman. Then, why do we expressly offer the Clam shelter tents as a solution? There are really four reasons why we prefer the Clam pop-up screen tent alternatives over those offered by other manufacturers. The names of them are as follows:

Super Quick Setup

It takes less time to set up a Clam pop-up shelter than any other screen tent available on the market. People have reported setting up a portable toilet in under 60 seconds, and taking one down in the same amount of time as setting it up. When you consider the amount of time we all currently spend setting up camp, a quick and simple setup increases the likelihood that the screen tent house will be erected each time we stop by a significant margin. A super-rapid disassembly just serves to enhance the chance of this happening.

Collapses in Heavy Winds or Rain

When exposed to high winds or heavy rain, every single one of the Clam screen tent alternatives available is designed to collapse safely and without harm. In theory, this appears to be a disadvantage, but in practice, it may well be the most advantageous feature that a Clam tent has to offer. Because, as you may be aware, most screen tents on the market are not designed to collapse in severe weather. That is not to suggest, however, that they do not. Wind and rain will ultimately cause screen tents without this feature to collapse when the conditions get too extreme, but they will do so in such a way that they will be utterly wrecked once they do.

High Quality and Repairable

Aside from having that fantastic collapsible function that helps to minimize damage, the Clam shelter tents are also quite good quality, which means they will last far longer than the majority of other screen tent alternatives on the market. In spite of the fact that the Clam business does not advocate its tents for usage full-time, we have not had any problems with leaving one out for weeks or even months at a time. The polyester that is used in its manufacture is of the highest quality, and the mesh is so fine that it even keeps the no-see-ums away from the user.

All of that being said, accidents can happen, and if your tent is used frequently enough, it is probable that it may sustain some little damage here and there. Fortunately, Clam patch kits and replacement poles can be purchased to quickly and easily fix these tents.

Awesome Accessories

Aside from patch kits and replacement poles, clam shelter tents are also available with a few more accessories. Wind panels, flooring, and rain flys are all available for select Quick-Set shelter types, allowing you to set up camp in your Quick-Set shelter without having to leave it. Lights and fans designed specifically for the Clam pop-up shelter are available as additional accessories.

Types of Clam Quick-Set Shelters

Assuming you understand why you should pick a Clam shelter tent over those made by other companies, let’s have a look at the several sorts of Quick-Set shelters made by this particular firm.

Traveler Screen Tent

It is the smallest of the Clam tent alternatives, and it is called theTraveler Screen Tent. In other words, it’s the smallest and most convenient to keep in your RV. Nonetheless, at 36 square feet, it has enough space to comfortably accommodate four people.

Venture Screen Tent

Do you want to take it a step farther than the Traveler? TheVenture Screen Tentis a little larger, yet it is still tiny enough to be easily stored in a small space. If you want to forego the table, you can easily accommodate six people in chairs inside this screen tent. If you choose not to use the table, you can easily fit six people in chairs within this screen tent.

Escape Screen Tent

TheEscape Screen Tentis the most popular of the many options for privacy. This Clam shelter is even larger than the Venture, and it may simply be placed over a picnic table of normal dimensions. This tent comfortably accommodates eight people, making it a fantastic choice for larger families or those who prefer to have a few friends over for a get-together.

Escape Sport Screen Tent

Do you want anything to take to a sporting event with you? TheEscape Sport Screen Tent is the perfect solution for you. This option is extremely similar to the Escape option that was previously stated. The most significant distinction is that it is designed to be used on hard surfaces rather than dirt, which is the most common. It is also available in a number of more vibrant and eye-catching colors.

Escape Sky Screen Tent

TheEscape Sky Screen Tent, which is yet another choice in the Escape range of screen tents, is a fantastic alternative for those who enjoy stargazing and is available in two sizes. This type is equipped with a screen ceiling, which allows you to let in natural light while also gazing at the night sky. If severe weather threatens, you may close the roof flap to keep your belongings safe and dry. This tent is also available as a part of a camper package if you like. This bundle contains the Escape Sky Screen Tent, as well as a rain fly, wind panels, and a ground mat for your convenience.

Escape XL Screen Tent

TheEscape XL Screen Tent, which is described as an 8-person tent, is available for individuals who want something even larger than the traditional Escape. Having said that, we wouldn’t be astonished if you were able to fit in another person or two. This is an excellent entry-level option for folks who enjoy large parties.

Pavilion Screen Tent

In comparison to the Escape XL, the Pavilion Screen Tent is not significantly larger. Having saying that, it is a little more upscale. This option is fitted with built-in wind panels that can be rolled down to provide protection from the weather for you and your companions. On top of that, the wind panels are equipped with built-in windows, allowing you to let in some light and a smidgeon of breeze even when the panels are not in use.

Another tent that may be purchased as part of a camper package is this one. The tent, as well as a floor that is compatible with it, are included in the package.

Excursion Screen Tent

The Excursion Screen Tent is the largest of the Clam tents and is the ideal choice for individuals who appreciate hosting large groups. It has enough space for up to 16 people, which means that large dinner parties with friends will be comfortable, and everyone will be protected from pests.

Cabin Screen Tent

  • 112 square feet
  • Sitting capacity for eight people
  • Sleeping capacity for four people

The Cabin Screen Tent is the last structure. This one was created with overnight campers in mind, and it’s perfect for individuals who plan to sleep in their screen tent during the day. Alternatively, the middle panel may be left open to make a single enormous room, or it can be divided into two distinct areas to create a sleeping space and a living space. Unlike the second half of the tent, which is a screen room with built-in wind panels, the first half of this tent has true polyester walls.

In conclusion, clam screen tent shelters are an excellent choice for RVers who enjoy spending time outside and who need a little additional living space without having to worry with intense sunlight and mosquitoes.

Our Verdict

TheREI Co-op Screen House Shelteris simple to assemble while maintaining the appearance of a traditional camping tent. The size and easily identifiable layout make it accessible to a large number of campers from a variety of backgrounds. When completely closed, the dual-zippered doors provide enhanced pest protection without compromising the open-air sensation that you’re looking for. This shelter, which can be built up over a picnic table, can accommodate up to six persons comfortably. In addition, the fixed material at the tent’s bases presents a trip risk and necessitates the use of a ladder to hoist the tent entirely up and over a picnic table in order to set it up over a table.

Because no guy-lines are supplied with this product, it is dependent on the stability provided by six stakes, making it extremely vulnerable to collapse in windy circumstances. During favorable weather circumstances whether vehicle camping or enjoying a picnic, this shelter is a fantastic option.

This tent, with its 100 square feet of floor space and 7 feet of clearance, is spacious enough to accommodate up to six people while providing protection from the elements and insects. It fits over a 10 foot picnic table at a campground with plenty of additional space on the sides and ends. The light-colored ceiling provides a livelier environment, giving the room the appearance of being larger than it actually is. On the other hand, it does not provide a particularly dark and cold shade. The technical specifications are 120 “120” × 84″ with a maximum height of 120″.

  • There’s enough space for a picnic table and a few folks.
  • There’s enough space for a picnic table and a few folks.
  • When erected over a picnic table, this is beneficial in that it keeps pests out, but it makes getting in and out of the tent a little more difficult.
  • As well as the non-removable material that runs around the outside of the tent, the bottom portion of the entrance is loose and can provide a tripping hazard.

Ease of Setup

Because of the low weight of this tent and the conventional pole arrangement, it is a reasonably simple tent to put together and take down. Despite the fact that this tent may be constructed by one person, it is advised that two people use it since it can be set up in around 8 minutes. The collapsible aluminum poles are placed into the fabric sheath in two locations and connected to the four corners with a ringlet, resulting in a simple six-pole technique that takes little time. In the event that you have prior expertise setting up tents, the process is fairly straightforward and obvious.

Because it is so light and substantial, and because it lacks a strong frame, it is extremely frail and difficult to lift on one’s own.

Wind Resistance

When erected, this shelter appears to be unstable as the wind gathers up speed, and the possibility of it collapsing under strong gusts of wind appears to be quite real. There are six pegs included in the package to hold the corners and edges of the tent, but there are no guy-lines included. The anchoring protection provided by six stakes is insufficient for a lightweight and big canopy. In addition, if you decide to purchase any third-party guylines, there aren’t any handy attachment places for them.

  1. It has a large amount of surface area as compared to its relatively thin poles, and it collapses quite rapidly when blown around.
  2. During testing, we saw corners falling in on themselves, with the possibility of poles bending as a result.
  3. Stakes are quite simple to drive into the ground in various situations.

  5. While it is difficult, use caution when using a hammer or a rock since they will quickly bend.

The REI Screen House features a style that is reminiscent of a camping tent. Because the poles are exposed to the elements, they are susceptible to damage or bending. This shelter, on the other hand, comes with a splint in case one of the poles snaps, which we believe is a wonderful feature. The fabric is ripstop nylon, which is both sturdy and effective at blocking the sun as well as moderate rainfall. It is made of a tiny enough screen material to keep no-see-ums out while yet allowing for enough ventilation throughout the room.

With a weight of only 12.3 pounds, this tent is far lighter than the other large, heavy, and clumsy camping canopies we have tried. Instead of two carrying handles, the carrying bag is equipped with a single shoulder strap. This is more convenient for shorter traveling durations, however we found the strap to be extremely unpleasant for extended journeys while carrying additional items as well as a backpack. Because it collapses to a size of around 29 “Anyone should be able to complete it in reasonable time.

Best Application

For families or parties of up to six individuals, the Screen House is an excellent choice for providing shelter over picnic tables during pleasant weather. This shelter will provide protection from pests, as well as from light, wind, and a gentle trickle of precipitation. This tent is also a wonderful choice for people of all skill levels because of its lightweight design and simple setup. Because of its light weight, this shelter is ideal for vehicle camping or for setting up after a short stroll in the wilderness.

It’s not the most costly camping canopy available, but we aren’t sure that it is a high-value product. The weight and storage capacity of this tent may be important considerations for you. We would, however, recommend a different model if you are looking for durability, lifespan, and stability.

Lightweight and simple to put up, this tent is ideal for vehicle camping since it provides protection from the sun and pests. It is quite simple to erect over picnic tables and provides enough room to accommodate up to six people in comfort. Because of its low weight, aluminum poles on the outside, and absence of guy-lines, it does not appear to be particularly stable. Its fixed base and unlocked doors provide a tripping danger due to their open positions. Overall, this camping canopy may be sufficient for your requirements on a few trips, keeping pests out of your face and food, but it is unlikely to become your favorite piece of camping equipment if you travel frequently.

How to Use a Screen Tent at a Camp Site

(Photo courtesy of; camp image courtesy of Vasiliy Koval) Screen tents are tents that are totally constructed of a material that is similar to that used for mosquito nets. Due to the fact that screen tents do not provide any privacy or protection against the sun, they cannot be used for sleeping. A screen tent, on the other hand, may be quite beneficial during a camping trip. Depending on the size of your screen tent, it may be used to store objects or to give a more secure area for relaxing.

Step 1

Determine the most appropriate location for the screen tent depending on its intended use. Installing a wide screen tent near the fire pit area will make it easier to get dishes in and out of the tent when you need to utilize it as a temporary eating spot. This is very useful for keeping flies and other insects away from your meals. For those who have a tiny screen tent they may use for naps or leisure in the open air, make sure to put it somewhere shaded so that you don’t get sunburned if you fall asleep in it.

Step 2

If your tent does not have a floor, place it over the picnic table provided by the campground.

Alternatively, if your tent comes with a floor, you may simply put it down on the ground and bring a folding table and chairs with you. Make sure that the feet of the chairs and table are cushioned in order to prevent the floor of the tent from becoming damaged.

Step 3

With your tent, you may turn it into a playpen for toddlers and newborns. It will protect youngsters from pest bites and keep them contained to a limited area so that you don’t have to chase after them all over the place.

Step 4

Make use of the tent as a “entertainment center,” where you can sit down and play a game of cards or a board game with friends. During the night, when a blazing lamp will attract insects to your campground, this method is extremely effective. The screen tent will keep the insects away while still allowing air to circulate, which is something you wouldn’t get if you were to sleep in your sleeping tent.

Step 5

Purchase drapes to connect to the sides of the screen tent so that you may use it as a sleeping tent as necessary. They are available for purchase at camping supply stores and can be a useful alternative for big groups of people who do not want to bring along multiple tents for each person in the party.
