Shelter Tent or Dog Tent

It was built in late 1861 and is referred to as a dog tent or a shelter tent. This was the tent used by the average soldier. In addition to the half-shelter, which was half of the tent, two halves would button together to make a single tent, each soldier received a single tent. Each part of the shelter measured approximately five feet long and four and a half feet broad.

• Soldiers worked in pairs, combining the contents of their half-shelters to construct one large tent that could accommodate two people.
• They were placed vertically into the ground, one in front of the tent and one in rear, to keep them from falling out.
• Soldiers also utilized branches to hold the tent, which was a nice touch.
• Instead, they would camp out beneath the stars with only their blankets and a sleeping bag.
• They would put their tents up if the weather was terrible, or if it seemed like it was going to grow worse.

Soldiers would construct a trench around their tent to collect rainfall and drain it out. It was the hard way for new recruits to learn that if they didn’t bother to do this, they would wake up in the middle of a puddle with all of their equipment soaking when it rained.

Civil War Tents during Winter Quarters

Fighting usually comes to a halt with the coming of the winter season. Soldiers utilized their dog tents to establish a more permanent base of operations in their camp. Walls composed of logs were built between two and five feet high, with mud placed between the logs to seal the holes between each log. The dirt beneath the shelter was occasionally excavated out one to two feet to make room for the shelter. Wooden rafters were constructed to be placed on top of the walls, and the tent halves were then placed on top of the rafters to complete the structure.

Winter Quarters During the American Civil War Chimneys were built inside these shelters out of brick, stone, or wood, depending on the climate.

A fireplace would be constructed beneath the chimneys, which served to keep the shelter warm while also providing a cooking area for the men.

Ground cloths are an item that is sometimes overlooked when trekking or camping, yet they are quite important. You purchase a tent and some form of plastic to put underneath it, and that’s the end of the story. Is a ground cloth, however, required? Does your local outfitter provide any more options beyond the pricey “tent footprints” or the common blue-tarp available at hardware stores?

Is a ground cloth needed for a tent?

There are a plethora of options for the plain ground cloth that you may pick. Is one, however, absolutely necessary? According to conventional knowledge, a ground covering is required to protect the floor from sharp pebbles, twigs, and stones, as well as the possibility of Mole Men digging from beneath the tent and capturing unwary campers and their belongings. A basic ground cloth is a fantastic thing to keep on hand for the hiker who prefers to sleep under the stars and only uses a tarp when the weather is very bad. Place it on the ground, place your sleeping pad and sleeping bag on top, and take in the night sky above. The ground cloth will serve to protect and keep dirt out of your sleeping bag and pad, as well as aid to organize your belongings and shield you from any dew or ground moisture that may occur while backpacking.

From Amazon, you may get a classic: Painters Drop Cloth (Polyethylene). Another tried-and-true classic that is ideal for individuals on a tight budget who want something lightweight but still long-lasting. A t hicker 6mil is a bomber, but it’s also a heavyweight. A2mil ground cloth is incredibly light, but it is not particularly durable, which is a concern for many people. The 3mil thickness appears to be a reasonable compromise between durability and lightweight. For this grade, a 3’x7′ piece weighs around 3 oz.

If you are outfitting a large number of individuals, large rolls of fabric can be purchased (such as a Boy Scout troop).

In the end, it’s nothing more than a piece of fabric that can be repaired with mending tape.

For the ultra-light hiker, consider Polycryo / Window Shrink Wrap Insulation, which is available on Amazon. Polycryo and shrink-wrap Window Insulator are both constructed of polyolefin and are extremely similar in appearance. They are both lightweight (about a fourth the weight of Tyvek and even lighter than DCF) and affordable, making them excellent candidates for ground cloths. This option, while not quite as robust as DCF or Tyvek, is still sturdy enough for individuals who use camp primarily for sleeping and do not intend to spend a significant amount of time in camp.

The most significant difficulty is that polycryo can shrink by up to 2 inches in width and 5 inches in length when exposed to high temperatures.

Most persons are unlikely to fall within this category.

In the bottom of the tent, sod cloths are a 12 inch strip of canvas sewed inside each wall of each tent’s interior at the bottom. Using a ground cloth in conjunction with a sod cloth creates a tight seal that keeps out the elements such as wind, rain, and pests from entering the structure. If you purchase a tent setup kit along with it, the sod cloth will not be included! When the tent is being constructed, the sod cloth must be sewed on. We just got this piece from a journal that had previously been unpublished. The diary belonged to Henry Campbell, a teenage bugler in the 18th Indiana Light Artillery, which was under the command of Eli Lilly at the time of its writing. The date on this “short” is June 23, 1863. The first day of the Tullahoma Campaign has come and gone. June 23, We have just finished cleaning out and finishing one of the most cheery and pleasant campers we have ever built. Our horses and quarters are constantly in the shadow, as the sun can’t penetrate through the dense greenery that covers our camp and provides shade.

We constructed “bunks” that were superior than the sailors’ hammock.

It worked quite well except for the fact that if one of us got out of bed before the other, it had the unwelcome tendency of dumping us on the ground, or if we rolled around in the night, it stirred up the other side of the house like a wagon on a corduroy road, and it was a pain to live with.

If you have another maker’s shelter half that has been created to the original pattern, our shelter half will button with that one. Our shelter is 65 inches long and 63 inches broad. It is made of wood. It’s composed entirely of cotton drill for maximum comfort.

• All button holes and grommets are manually sewed on by the seamstresses.
• The Schuylkill Arsenal, in fact, accepted shelter sections that had been machine sewed together.
• Each part of the shelter weighs 2 1/2 pounds.
• Our shelter half is built as closely as we can to the original as we reasonably can.

• It is, without a question, the most thorough piece of study that has ever been done on the topic.

HELP WITH SETTING UP A SHELTER The set up kit for the Federal shelter half type II consists of two saplings with forks at the top that are 50 inches long, one ridge pole made from a sapling that is 6 feet long, and six hand hewn tent pegs made from various hardwoods that are 12 inches long and at least 1 inch in diameter, all of which are included in the kit.

For a more spacious bottom area, the upright poles can be reduced to provide a longer space between them.

Remember that the higher the upright, the steeper the angle of your roof; this implies that there will be less “drips” during a rainstorm.

The usage of this approach may be seen in many of the earliest video recordings of wall tents in the field, which were shot in the field.

By creating an overhang, you can keep the sun off your tent for a longer period of time.

This is an excellent method of protecting your tent from the elements.

As though you’re putting up a shade structure everywhere you go.

It will extend the life of your tent by many years.

A fly is far less expensive than a tent.

To set up your fly, just stretch it across your tent, hook your ropes to it, and then pull them out to an angle that raises the fly off the canvas by a few inches, and drive your stakes into the ground.

It will also eliminate the shadow puppet displays that occur when you are changing (or undressing) in your tent at night while the lantern is light, which can be very entertaining.

8 POLE WITH RIDGE

As may be seen in the photograph to the right. This set up kit contains six uprights that measure 2 x 2 inches and are 6 feet long (These are your outer perimeter poles). In addition, there are two upright poles that are 2 X 2 inches in diameter and 7 feet long, each with two long iron pins. The ridge is supported by these poles. In order to extend out the top, the iron pins must pass through the ridge. On either end of the fly, there is a grommet that is designed to fit over this long pin. TIP FOR WINDY CONDITIONS

This trick may come in handy if the wind picks up speed unexpectedly and starts to blow your fly around the room. Simply grab the bottom of the outside poles and pull them inward toward the center of your fly, then tighten your ropes once more. Using this method, you may lower the outside edge of your fly and compel the wind to pass over it rather than beneath. The awning will also help to keep some of the blowing rain at bay.
