I was wise in that I went into the year relying on the knowledge of people who had recently taught Adv Alg in the previous year (for me it had been 11 years ago).

  1. I’ve had a lot of first days of school in my professional life, but I’m confident that I can learn even more.
  2. It was her explanation that she utilizes name tents and that during the first week of school, she writes a brief message for each pupil reacting to whatever they have written within the name tent.
  3. We must establish personal connections with pupils.
  4. Students improve more as a result of feedback rather than a numerical or letter grade.
  5. We must ensure that our classrooms are welcoming environments for all students.
  6. Morgan’s objectives for the first week are simple: to establish relationships with her pupils and to foster a sense of community among the entire class.

My request was for them to introduce themselves to the folks with whom they were seated.

This was their first task for the first week of class.

My class consisted of pupils in the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades.

Morgan’s and my objective for the first week was to establish a community of math learners.

As an aside: The process of establishing a sense of community during the first week of school is fairly frequent in middle school; however, it has not been my experience that this is as common in high school mathematics courses.

We continued with our activities from the previous day.

AA The first day of school was a slog.

An additional portion of my day 1 lecture was posted about HERE the day before.

They did so well.

When we were down to the final five minutes of class, I finally got the students to open their name tents and write me a letter in the yellow highlighted box about anything they wanted to about day one.

That afternoon, I composed a response to each and every kid in my class using a response template.

I enjoy the wide range of answers I receive from my pupils.

I made a point of spending 1-2 minutes every day reading what every pupil was thinking and responding to it.

Not only did it assist me in memorizing names even more quickly, but it also provided me with valuable information about my students and their relationship to my class.

Here are a number of things I discovered after implementing name tents in my high school mathematics classroom during the first week of school.

  1. I have homework tasks that I offer to students during the first week of school that require them to write a great deal more about themselves. This does not take the place of them, but it was an excellent addition. With the extra benefit of being able to provide fast response to pupils
  2. After three days of receiving the prompt “comments,” some students were writing very little or just saying something like “It was OK.” During the last minute of class on day 4, I encouraged students to “Ask me a question” instead of making a remark, and I promised to answer any questions they had regarding the class or about myself personally. This was a huge success. I received a large number of excellent questions. I tried to be as honest as possible in my responses to everyone. As an added bonus, I posted some questions on the board for the whole class to see, allowing everyone to obtain feedback on what their peers were asking of me. I’ve created a new and improved Name Tent for this year’s first week of school (see the bottom of this page for more information), which includes the opportunity for kids to ask me questions. Here are some of the questions that students have posed to me. I adore them
  3. Despite reading and replying to kids on a daily basis with what they wrote in their name tents, I was still missing hints that they were sending me. When I went back to the name tents to write this piece, I found some information that my kids had supplied me but that I had overlooked. Consider the following image of the inside of this student’s tent: This was the exterior rear of his tent, and it was very stunning: What I now know about this kid, having missed the first week of class, is that he performed best in math class when we were engaged in more creative activities. This kid completed the least amount of homework and classwork of any student I had this year until about two-thirds of the way through the year, when I completed my Desmos Art Project, and he produced the following in 24 hours: Having reflected on the situation, I wish I had taken notice of his outstanding doodles in week 1 and utilized this as a signal to develop lessons that would engage him sooner. This is something I intend to alter — this year. The name tent this year has been modified to promote sketching instead of replying to me
  4. I understand that many people reading this may say, “Sara, name tents are fantastic, but I just do not have time to put them together.” To give you some hope, I can assure you that the time I invested in them was completely worthwhile. While teaching full-time during the first week of school last year, I would also leave school each day to attend the Minnesota State Fair and work at our Math On-a-Stick exhibit in the evenings, which was a great experience. I had a lot on my plate. I went ahead and did it anyhow, and I’m so pleased I did. In order to hear daily from every student AND for you to give them feedback, I HIGHLY encourage you to consider using these name tents OR doing something else during week 1
  5. I did read my name tents again at the end of September once I got to know my students a little better and I learned a great deal more. This is something I intend to do again this year. If I can figure out a method to do something similar to garner more student comments like this in October or November of this year, I would. For example, every day during week 1 I spent time (5 minutes) making students remember EVERY first name of every kid in the class In fact, I put them to the test on it the next week. Every day, I asked 1-2 groups to step up and introduce themselves to the rest of the class. By day 6, I would estimate that 60 percent of my pupils knew every name, and another 35 percent knew at least 80 percent or more of the names. It fostered a strong sense of camaraderie in the classroom. Later in the first quarter, students expressed their gratitude for the fact that other students recognized their names.

How to Make Meeting Table Name Cards in Microsoft Word

When preparing a meeting, there is normally a flurry of activity, including making reservations, gathering documents, and spreading the news about the event. However, you don’t want to be confronted with a stampede of guests when they arrive. Make use of your Microsoft Word program to provide table name cards to meeting attendees so they will know exactly where they should go. Table name cards, which are also known as seating cards or table tents, are made from a standard-size sheet of paper and are a simple and flexible way to direct visitors to their assigned tables.

Open Word

  • Open a new document in Microsoft Word. Select the “Page Layout” tab from the drop-down menu. Select “Orientation” from the drop-down menu. When you select “Landscape,” Word automatically adapts your page to a landscape orientation.

Draw a Text Box

  • Select the “Insert” tab from the drop-down menu. On the tab’s ribbon, click the “Text Box” button to insert a text box. Select the “Draw Text Box” option from the drop-down menu. When the cursor switches to a plus sign, draw a text box on the bottom half of the page using the black marker. The card will be able to be folded in the area provided above

Type a Name in the Text Box

  • To enter text into the text box, click inside it. Table 1 or Table A can be designated by typing the name of the person who will be seated at the table or the name of the table, for example.

Change the Font as Desired

  • The text should be highlighted. Select the “Home” tab from the drop-down menu. If you want to change the font, you may do so by selecting a different font from the font option. While the text is still highlighted, select “Font size” from the drop-down menu. Make sure that the text fills the whole text box without hyphenating or continuing onto another line by increasing the size of the font. When there are a lot of letters in a table or a person’s name, the text will be larger or smaller depending on the font.

Save the Table Card Document

  • To access the “File” menu, select “File.” Select “Save As” from the drop-down menu. To save the table card document, provide a file name for it and click the “Save” button

Tip

  1. These instructions are written with the assumption that you are using standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper, which is the most popular choice for tiny, inexpensive printers that are not capable of printing unique table name cards. To alter the paper size, select the “Size” button from the “Page Layout” tab and then follow the remainder of the instructions on this page. Even while printing on card stock is desirable, the printed paper may always be bonded together with other materials to form the tent structure. When you want to create a double-sided table name card that will be doubly useful to table seekers, simply click once on the text box that contains the table name. To replicate the box, hold down the “Ctrl” and “C” keys at the same time. To paste the copy into the document, press the “Ctrl” and “V” keys at the same time, then drag it to the top of the page. The text is now oriented in the incorrect direction. Hover the pointer over the green dot at the top of the text box to see what it says in the box. Twirl the pointer about 180 degrees when the rotate sign appears on the cursor to flip the text box when it appears. Even though the text box seems to be upside down on the Word page, you’ll have a text box that can be read from either way, which is excellent for when you fold the paper down the middle and use it as a tent on the table

How to Make a Tent Card in Word

Depending on the thickness of the card stock, a single fold may be used, or two more folds may be used at the bottom to make lightweight paper more durable. Featured image courtesy of Karin Lau/Hemera/Getty Images Tent cards, which are made by folding a sheet of card stock in half, may be a valuable tool for displaying table numbers or seating assignments at group gatherings and meetings. Using them to describe gift basket contents at an auction, mark food at a buffet, or offer rapid computer set-up instructions in computer laboratories are all examples of how you might utilize them.

Step 1

These steps can be modified to suit your needs if you are generating tent cards of a different size; however, for the sake of this article, we will make a full-page tent card in Microsoft Word 2013.

Step 2

Sites like All-Free-Download, Public Domain Photos, and BigStock Photo are good places to look for free clipart, vectors, and other images on the internet (links in Resources).

Step 3

Design the visuals and text that will appear on your business card. Make some ideas on paper and with a pen, or use your computer to create a few different possibilities.

Step 1

Launch Microsoft Word 2013 and create a new blank document.

Step 2

Make sure that your page’s orientation is Portrait on the Page Layout tab, and that your margins are 0.5-inches wide all the way around.

Step 3

Click the “Text box” button on the Insert tab and then select one of the text box options. Insert two text boxes this way: The text boxes should be positioned and formatted, with any borders removed as appropriate. 8.5 inches for the overall height of the page (after subtracting the two half-inch margins at the top and bottom of the page) divided by two boxes equals 3.75 inches for their heights. For different-sized tent cards, different-sized text boxes will be required, resulting in sets of two cells, each of which represents one side of the folded card.

Step 4

In the bottom text box, type in the wording that will appear on the front of your tent card. Images can be placed anywhere near, around, or inside the text box, depending on your preference. In order for the text box to fit within the visual frames, you may need to move the corners of the text box inward. If the visual is put inside the text box, you may experiment with wrapping the text around the graphic.

Step 5

In the top text box, type the text that will appear on the reverse of the card. When you choose a text box, a rotation icon should appear above it, indicating that it has been selected. To flip the text box upside down, either click and drag the rotation symbol above the text box, or visit the Drawing Tools Format tab and pick “Flip Vertical” from the “Rotate” button drop-down menu. The text box settings will need to be adjusted if your text box flipped but your text didn’t, as shown above. Right-click the text box and select “Format Shape” from the context menu.

Step 6

Insert the visuals for the back of the card next to, around, or in the top text box to make it more visually appealing. You may also reverse the graphics directions by selecting a picture and then clicking on it. Select “Flip Vertical” from the “Rotate” drop-down menu on the Format tab of the Arrange group on the Format tab.

Step 7

You may save and print your tent card as many times as you like.

Tip

Additionally, you may choose tent card templates from the Microsoft Template Gallery to use. Print using card stock paper that is at least 60 lb. in weight to ensure that your card is strong and will not buckle.

Warning

Check that the card stock will work with your printer before purchasing it. When a piece of paper is too heavy for your printer, it might cause it to jam. Consult your printer’s user manual for information on permissible paper sizes and weights.
