After leaving Alanreed, TX, travel 6.5 miles west on I-40 to Exit 128 for the Lake McClellan Recreation Area/Farm Rd. 2477 signage. Keep to the right at the exit sign and go to the stop sign. Turn right onto Rd. 2477 (a small paved two-lane road) and continue for 2.3 miles to the first portion of the campsite (tents only), or 3.1 miles to the campground sign and second section of the campground (combined sites). Turn left at the sign and continue for 0.1 mile until you reach a “Y” junction. Continue straight for 0.3 miles to the campsite.

Camped on June 9th, 2020 (Tuesday night). Due to COVID-19, the facility was open, but the restrooms and showers were closed. There was a vault toilet accessible. When we arrived, there were strong gusts; but, because the campsite was mostly vacant, we chose a site that was oriented into the wind. Our site, as well as a few others, were not numbered. everything felt quite level – we.more Camped on June 9th, 2020 (Tuesday night). Due to COVID-19, the facility was open, but the restrooms and showers were closed.

1. When we arrived, there were strong gusts; but, because the campsite was mostly vacant, we chose a site that was oriented into the wind.
2. We didn’t have to level our camper because everything appeared to be reasonably level.
3. Many pull-throughs and, of course, back-ins can be found on this course.
4. If we had taken into consideration the fact that we would not have showers and facilities, we would have chosen McDowell CG, which featured waterfront sites.
5. Because of the abundance of huge trees, there are spots that provide complete shade to those that receive predominantly sunlight.
6. For electric sites, there was water available through a faucet (not a pump) and a cement pad beneath the site with a drain; for non-electric sites, water was available through the bathroom.
7. However, if the campground were swarming with people on ATVs, it wouldn’t be nearly as enjoyable.
8. Because the lake level was so low, the island was not even partially submerged.
9. Because to COVID, it is possible that this campsite receives minimal attention.

There were three deposit pipes at the self-pay fee station, and two of them were completely full. The VT had trash on the floor (in the woman’s room, at least; there was TP available). The land, on the other hand, had been mowed and weed-wacked.

We were the only campers there the first week of September, but still felt safe. A fine overnight spot, or even a couple days. Convenient to I-40, but far enough away to be quiet. A few easy pull through sites with water and electric that have nice trees. Another RV parking area was not so great looking. Unfortunately,bathrooms and showers were not good. Picturesque little lake and fields. We stayed here in a Travel Trailer.

Quick stop off I40, directions did not say to turn left at road to tents so we missed in the dark (no camping sign either)ended up the not so scenic RV sites in our van. But the fees were low, facilties were decent, we were out of the wind, had the place to ourselves (Nov.)saw deer.

McClellan Creek National Grassland

It is located in the Texas Panhandle and is one of the most visited recreational locations in this region. McClellan Creek National Grassland is one of the most popular places to visit in the area. The grasslands, despite their tiny size (just over 1,000 acres), are home to a diverse range of animal and avian species. There are also a handful of ATV tracks that wind their way across the grasslands’ undulating hills and valleys.
