Taking Napier Outdoors truck tent on the road for review

Going outside, away from the city, away from the office, and into the fresh air might help you to feel more calm. That is one of the reasons why I enjoy camping. I can switch off my phone, start a fire, and sit outside under the stars and think about life. No fancy RV’s for me; I’ve been a tent camper since the dawn of time! Since I’ve owned a few of different tents over the years, and helped set up even more for tag-along friends and family, I was looking forward to trying out a whole different sort of tent.

  1. The Napier Truck Tent has the following features: The Napier Sportz Truck Tent is designed to fit into the bed of a pickup truck and is held in place by straps that are attached to the truck.
  2. It is also equipped with a tarp for further protection.
  3. A handful of pockets on the interior allow you to store small items in a convenient location where you can readily access them.
  4. In comparison to my usual ground tent, which has only two poles, the Sportz Truck Tent has six poles that must be assembled and inserted before use.
  5. In the middle of the tent, the two main poles (blue) are arranged in a “X,” with each pole sliding into its own color-coordinated sleeves.
  6. Unfortunately, it was a source of annoyance that didn’t seem to get any better with time.
  7. Lifting the tent with each pole in its sleeve and tucking the ends of the poles into little pockets is the first step in setting up your tent.

The final pole to be installed (in black) is placed inside the tent to hold it open, but only after the canvas has been raised and secured in place.

While it is possible to complete the tent by yourself in a pinch, the tent becomes so enormous and cumbersome as it begins to take shape that I believe you would risk injuring it by attempting to complete it one corner or pocket at a time.

Do you want to see how the truck tent is put up or watch a video of this review?

While I conducted a test run with this tent in my yard, my first actual outdoor experience with it took place at Oregon’s Painted Hills National Monument.

While the large amount of air space in the Sportz tent meant that we weren’t as toasty as we would have been in our smaller tent, the Sportz tent kept us completely dry and comfortable.

Another advice I learned is that you’ll want to open some of the windows while you’re pulling the tent down, or else it’ll feel like you’re waiting for a gigantic balloon to deflate, which is not pleasant.

My recommendation to anybody interested in purchasing a tent like this is to get an air mattress that has notches particularly built for truck beds, rather than using a standard-sized air mattress.

In the middle of nowhere, there’s trouble.

One of the pieces of the main folding/articulating fibreglass poles (the enormous green one that keeps the entrance open and much of the front of the tent up) began to crack.

Initially, I thought the pole was an aberration and that I had a defective portion of fibreglass, so I duct taped it together.

When a second pole began to split, it was a source of disappointment for me.

Napier Outdoors has responded to a customer service inquiry.

I was impressed with the speed with which they responded.

The firm stated that occasionally difficulties might develop as a result of poorly putting up the tent, but that they could see from my Twitter feed (@ErinLYYC) that this was not the case in this instance.

For the record, I found Napier’s customer care response to be prompt, helpful, and I was completely delighted with the outcome as a client.

Due to the time limits of this review, I was unable to put the second tent through a comparable series of tests (i.e.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of the Napier Truck Tent One of the most significant disadvantages of this tent is that it prevents you from using your car after it has been put up.

You’ll also need to be prepared to set up and take down your camp every day.

I suppose you could use a Thermarest instead of an air mattress, but you’ll definitely need something to soften the ridged metal truck bed you’ll be lying on.

Another significant disadvantage for me is the poles.

The fact that two poles have cracked after only a few usage gives me severe doubts about the durability and lifetime of the product.

If you have a tonneau cover on the bed of your truck, you can still set up this tent, which I thought was a nice feature.

In addition, having a back window on this tent that opens onto the back glass of the truck’s cab would be considered a plus in my opinion.

Review of the Whole However, while I’d love to see this tent re-invented with more durable materials such as stronger elastic and aluminum poles, I don’t believe this version is ready for prime time.

Even while I liked Napier Outdoors’ prompt and satisfactory reaction to my difficulties, I regret that this isn’t a tent that I would purchase for myself at this time, both because of the poles and because I prefer the convenience of being able to use my vehicle when camping.

In the event that I am given the opportunity to re-evaluate the tent, I will publish an update. The Napier Outdoors Sportz Truck Tent is available from Best Buy.

Truck Bed Tent Pros:

When you go camping, the aim isn’t to keep yourself clean all of the time. The goal is to restrict the amount of dirt you drag inside the tent to a bare minimum while still keeping the tent clean itself. A truck bed tent eliminates the need to worry about setting up your tent in a muddy place and then having to clean it up when you return home from your trip. As long as your truck bed is kept reasonably clean, your tent will remain far cleaner than it would if it were set up on the ground. One of my least favorite aspects of camping is the process of dismantling the camp.

Being off the ground

Keeping clean isn’t the main purpose when you’re out camping. Best case scenario is to restrict the amount of dirt you drag into your tent to a bare minimum while still keeping your tent clean. A truck bed tent eliminates the need to worry about setting up your tent in a muddy place and then having to clean it up when you return home from your camping excursion. Because the tent will be elevated off the ground and will remain cleaner for longer as long as your truck bed is kept clean, this is an excellent option.

Making the decision to pack up my tent knowing that it will not be coated in mud when I return home makes it that much simpler when it comes time to return home.

Flat surface area to sleep on

In my opinion, there are a few advantages to this issue. First and foremost, whether you’re camping on the beach or in a scattered camping area, you won’t have to worry about locating the correct campground. All you have to do is level your car, even if the campground is not level to begin with! Finding the ideal campground becomes that much easier as a result of this. Another evident advantage is the increased comfort you will experience as a result of not sleeping on an uneven and rocky surface.

Cheaper option than a camper shell

Truck bed tents are a far more cost-effective alternative to purchasing a camper shell. Camper shells are excellent since they are entirely waterproof, have the ability to lock, and offer a variety of other functions. As you are well aware, a camper shell comes at a substantial price, as I am sure you are as well. Truck bed tents are hundreds of dollars less expensive than camper shells and allow you to camp in a manner that is quite similar to that of a camper shell. It’s comforting to know that your truck’s ability to provide the finest camping experience is not determined by the money you pay.

The final advantage that I wanted to mention is the fact that these truck bed tents are visually appealing.

With these items, you will undoubtedly attract attention at the campgrounds you visit. This is certainly neither an advantage or a reward for you, but it is entertaining anyway! Any action that encourages you to get out and camp more often will unquestionably be beneficial.

Check out ourrecommended gearpage if you’re looking for tried and tested camping gear I personally recommend to friends and family!

While being elevated above the ground has its advantages, it also necessitates the need to hop or climb into the bed of your truck. If you have a dog, children, or a truck with a lift, this may be more difficult to do! However, I would consider purchasing some type of platform or stool to utilize exclusively for this purpose rather than relying on your cooler as a “step.”

Limited footprint

Generally, the size of a truck bed tent is limited by the footprint of the truck’s bed. At the maximum, you’ll be able to accommodate 2 adults and another 2-3 children. Occasionally, some truck bed tents provide the option of upgrading to an attachment that can expand the sleeping space, but this is practically the same as purchasing a ground tent. It is possible that this is not a practical alternative if you have a very large family and wish for everyone to sleep together in the same tent. In the case of a mid-size pickup vehicle, I wouldn’t expect to be able to fit the entire family in the tent.

When comparing ground tents to other types of tents, the number of various features and brands is far smaller. The characteristics that are most important to each individual are unique to them. When you only have a few options, it might be a little more challenging to choose the appropriate tent for your needs.

Leaving camp

Comparing ground tents to other types of tents, the number of various features and brands is significantly fewer. The characteristics that are most important to each individual differ. The fact that you only have a restricted number of options might make finding the ideal tent a little more challenging.

Unloading the truck bed

There is a good chance that your truck bed is crammed with of camping equipment such as sleeping bags, food, chairs, and other necessities. As opposed to just pulling things out of the truck as you use them, you will need to create a space in the truck bed in order to put up your tent. People who want to travel light should take heart in knowing that this will not be a deal-breaker for them. This, on the other hand, may be a source of frustration for campers who cram their vehicles to the brim with equipment and toys.

Setup process

The method of setting up a ground tent is quite similar to that of a pop-up tent. In certain cases, the corners and fabric just will not match up with the truck bed’s corners and fabric correctly. The process might be time-consuming if you aren’t familiar with how to put up the tent properly. Personally, I want to have the tent set up be as quick and easy as possible before the event. In order to ensure that many individuals have not had set-up or fitting troubles with the tent, read the evaluations.

Is a truck tent worth buying?

Is it really worth it to use a truck bed tent, when all of the advantages and disadvantages that may be expected while doing so are put out for you? It is dependent on your individual circumstances whether you have a large or a relatively small family. Additionally, the location of your camping trip will have a significant impact. If the additional comfort, cleanliness, and peace of mind that comes with being off the ground outweigh the expense and restricted size of a truck bed tent, then it is well worth the investment.

Product Review: Napier Outdoors Sportz Truck Tent 57 Series

A little about myself: I’m an Eagle Scout. I’ll admit it: I’m fairly sure I haven’t been camping since I received my Eagle Scout award. My sleeping arrangements have included a few truck cabs and a few different floors, but I don’t believe I’ve slept in a tent in at least 15 years. Most of the time, it was due to a hectic schedule and travel ambitions that went beyond what I could reasonably drive there, but there was also a lack of discretionary funds to put into purchasing my own camping equipment.

  • My wife has been urging us to go camping for years, but we’ve never made it a priority in our schedule.
  • In the end, I consented to spend our Fourth of July camping in the eastern Sierras, just west of the Nevada line, because that was the only option left.
  • It was on a recent shopping trip to 4Wheel Parts that I noticed their Sportz Truck Tent 57 Series, and via some odd working of the world, I was contacted by Napier at the exact time I was planned my trip.
  • It appears to be available at nearly every large outdoor shop, as well as at a number of big auto parts retailers.
  • We were fully prepared for a similar scenario, and I’m pleased to say that the Napier tent is shockingly quick and simple to put up compared to our previous experience.
  • Nonetheless, the tent features a total of six poles, each of which is color-coded to match the sleeves of the tent, making it difficult to make a mistake.
  • The fact that we had to push, pull, and bend the tent poles far more than we wished to in order to get them placed might have been because the tent was spanking new and needed to spread out.

Unfortunately, we did detect some strain on two seams towards the top of the tent, which we believe were caused by the weight of the tent.

The other seam looked to have less overlapping material than the rest of the seams, and it appeared to be straining as a result of this.

We tightened the holding straps after we had the poles in place.

An additional three loops are located around the tailgate, and these take a little tinkering to get the buckles through the space between the bed and the tailgate, as seen below.

Because it being July in California, we decided to avoid the latter and instead opt for the former instead.

This exemplifies one of the few disadvantages of using a bed tent.

Although it is theoretically possible to take your belongings out of the tent, unfasten the straps, remove the stakes out of the ground, and place it on the ground, we did not attempt to do so.

If you wish to be able to leave the campground for a day excursion, it is preferable if it is within walking distance of the campsite.

Another point to remember is that truck beds, particularly those used for heavy duty, are elevated above the ground.

As a result, you won’t have to spend too much time cleaning up your truck bed before you leave.

If you have bed boxes like those in our long-term Nissan TitanXD, it will even fit around them, which we discovered on the spot when I didn’t have time to remove them before the trip.

If you plan on sleeping in a truck bed, you’ll need either an air mattress or a very thick sleeping pad because the ribbing on the bed is not particularly comfy.

Once you’ve logged in and set up your account, you can take use of a number of valuable services.

A ceiling hook with a strap hangs from the ceiling, allowing you to suspend a flashlight or lantern, and a retractable cargo net hangs from the ceiling, allowing you to store small objects there.

The side windows are separated vertically by zippers, which allow you to open just half of the window at a time in order to control privacy and airflow in your vehicle.

Once you’ve gotten it all wrapped up and tucked away, it should be easy to slip back into the storage bag.

Clearly, these individuals have tented in the past.

It has a few oddities as compared to typical tent camping, but depending on your point of view, they can be positives.

Overall, it’s a space-efficient shelter that’s a little more difficult to put together, but it allows you to camp anywhere your vehicle stops without having to worry about anything other than whether or not the ground is flat.

Truck Tent Comparison – Napier and Camp-Right

0Flares0Flares× Last Spring, we published a straightforward evaluation of the Napier truck bed tent. The general verdict was that, while there were a few issues we experienced with some elements that could certainly be improved, overall, it was a very useful and well-made tent that gave a comfortable resting place high above the squishy ground below. Due to the fact that hunting season has begun (or is about to begin, depending on your game of choice), we thought it would be a good time to revisit the topic of truck camping.

There are a couple pickup truck tents on the market that are worth looking into if you’re thinking of converting your Tundra into a full-fledged recreational vehicle in the future.

The CampRight, like the Napier, makes advantage of the whole length of your truck bed, as well as the lowered tailgate, to increase the amount of internal space that is accessible to you in your vehicle.

The CampRight even has zippers that illuminate in the dark, making it simpler to get inside your tent in the middle of the night.

– The Camp-Right tent is simple to erect, but where is the floor to lay your feet?

Surprisingly, it doesn’t actually have a floor — the bottom of the tent is fully open, so you can walk around on the ground.

TheCampRight does not have the awning that is included with theNapiertent, which means that the space right behind the tailgate is fully exposed to the elements when used with the latter.

There are two aspects that distinguish the Camp-Right tent from the Napier that make it more attractive than the latter.

The second solution solves one of the most common complaints about the Napier tent: the inability to reach inside the passenger compartment of a truck through the sliding rear window of the vehicle.

For many truck campers, this is a critical feature that distinguishes the tent from the Napier, which has a smaller, more difficult to use sleeve.

Is the ease with which you can get to the windows enough to compensate for the lack of a floor and the absence of an awning?
