Make Your Own Dreamy Canopy Tent

three bundles of low-cost curtains 1 spool of ribbon (about) (you may need 2 if you want to hang it longer) 1 enormous embroidery hoop

The supplies details:

As an example, I chose an off-white ribbon that was 1 1/2 inches wide and 12 feet long for my own project. A local craft store had it, so I bought it there. If you want to hang your lovely canopy tent a bit lower than I did, you may want to purchase two spools of thread instead of one, since I needed one full spool for mine. In addition, I purchased an embroidery hoop from a nearby craft shop. I believe it is the perfect size for me; it is 23 inches in diameter. Ikea LILLwhite curtains served as the backdrop for my photoshoot.

  1. They are ideal for this job in every way.
  2. You may also try searching on eBay or Amazon to see if they are available there.
  3. The dimensions of these drapes are 110 inches wide by 98 inches high.
  4. does that make sense?
  5. Let’s get this party started!

How to Assemble Your Dreamy Canopy Tent

Completely disassemble the hoop component and store the hardware bits somewhere you won’t lose them! A tiny plastic bag may be slipped over the end of an open hoop (with the open end positioned in the center of the bag so that its corners cling to the cloth) and then twisted around an open hoop’s arm arm. As you begin to slide the curtain fabric onto the hoop, the plastic will assist you in a smoother transition. Make sure that the casing seam, which runs along the top of the curtains, is towards the inside of the hoop while installing the curtains.

  • Take the hardware that you took from the hoop at the start of this process and put the hoop together once again.
  • Make certain that the curtains are equally spaced around the hoop before hanging them.
  • However, if you want your hoop to dangle more from the ceiling than I did, you may make your ribbon a little longer.
  • You will place one ribbon per two curtain panels, which will ensure that the curtains are evenly spaced on both sides.
  • Tie them together in a knot like this.
  • Request that your handyman install a hook from the ceiling in a safe location.
  • Then, with two curtain panels stretched apart, you have a door!
  • Watching them perform is like to being in a state of pure bliss!

It’s perfectly OK to toss them in a bag or keep them like way! Simple, enjoyable, and very stunning! I hope you and your children had a good time!

Make a DIY No-Sew Kids’ Play Canopy Tent. in an hour!

A hula hoop, two shower curtains, and an electric drill are all I need! I screamed, unleashing my inner MacGyver to get my point across. Our DIY Kids’ Canopy Play Tent was completed in less than an hour, and my children were ecstatic with it. This isn’t some amazing demonstration of super DIY prowess; the fact is that I’ll do everything to avoid sewing or spending a lot of time (and money) on a DIY project in the first place. While constructing the play canopy is simple, your children will adore the finished product, and you will feel like a superhero for completing it in such a short period of time– and for far less money than retail.

  1. I’d been planning how to create a play tent in my brain for years but had never taken the plunge and really tried it, mostly because I sew like a drunken sailor.
  2. My kid was going through the Land of Nod catalog last week and begged for one of their magnificent canopy type play tents, so I decided to try my hand at making a DIY version instead.
  3. For once, I’m pleased to say that it was successful the first time I attempted it.
  4. After reading the bookSimplicity Parenting, which changed my life, I’m making the transition to simpler toys.
  5. DIY versions may be used as a reading nook, dream space, camping area, ice cream truck, carnival tent, rocket ship, or whatever else the kids wish it to be at that particular time of year.
  6. I’ll take ‘innovative playthings for 100, Alex,’ and choose for the unadorned version of the toy set.
  7. This was so simple to construct that I can’t believe it really worked!
  8. The rugby striped shower curtain from Target (and I have to say, they had a ton of amazing designs) was my favorite, but you could use ANY shower curtain you wanted, from any retailer, at any price range.

Before you begin, you’ll need the following materials: 2 shower curtains are utilized as materials (I usedthis Rugby Stripe shower curtain) a binder ring that is far larger than normal (OR useTarget ring shower hooksas I did below) the hula hoop (I used a smaller size for this project) braided nylon rope (I usedSecureLine Diamond Braid Nylon rope, 40 ft.

feltvelcro is a kind of Velcro that is feel (if making the bunting) illuminations enchanted (optional) heavy-duty ceiling hooks with anchors for securing large items (check the weight limit on the ceiling hooks) drillscissors Directions: STEP ONE: First, drill four holes in the hula hoop with a little drill bit.

  1. STEP TWO: Gather the shower curtains together with a single shower ring (or binder ring).
  2. Despite the fact that it is a tight fit, it works!
  3. THE THIRD STEP: Cut four lengths of nylon rope and thread them through the hula hoop’s holes to secure them.
  4. Because ceiling heights and curtain lengths vary, I am unable to provide specific measurements.
  5. FINAL STEPPING POINT: Pull the rope through the top ring in the center of the gathered shower curtains, gathering all eight ends of the rope in the process.
  6. THE FIFTH STEP: Install the ceiling hook in the desired location.
  7. My 7-year-old snapped this picture with my DSLR camera as I was installing the hook, and I couldn’t believe I was posting it on the internet until I looked at it again.

Now this girl comes along and hits it right away.

Yoga pants, on the other hand, are not my buddy.

I made another knot at the very top of the ropes and then used a shower curtain ring to attach it to the hook at the very bottom of the ladder.

Because the shower curtain ring is only capable of supporting a small amount of weight, this may not be the most effective option.

That’s the one to go with.

STEP SEVEN: Putting the finishing touches on it!

Then you may start working on the flag bunting.

If you don’t want to sew, you may connect the flags to the tent instead of sewing them together with velcro instead of sewing them together.

Velcro dots were used to adhere them to the tent after that.

STEP EIGHT: My children enjoy the fact that there are two ‘doorways’ (since there are two shower curtains), but if you just want one access point, use velcro to attach the rear seams together instead.

We didn’t go overboard with the details, so this job was completed in under an hour!

It looks very stunning both inside the tent and at night.

I believe she does as well.

this morning, I could hear them laughing as they pretended to be at “camp,” filling the tent with books and torches and other “camping” supplies.

My children believe that this no-sew kids’ canopy play tent, which costs $130 less than the catalog version, is a winner because it is so inexpensive.

If only I’d summoned my inner MacGyver and created it years ago, when I initially had the idea in my head. THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF WASTE OF TIME. Now, where have all of my duct tape, tennis racquet, and rubber bands disappeared to? I’m building a swingset from scratch!

  • 2 Prepare the space for the canopy by clearing it of debris and laying down the tarp on the ground. Ensure that the area where you will be setting up the canopy is free of any debris. Lie down the tarp flat on the ground in about the location where you want it to be set up
  • The space must be cleared in order for the tarp to lay level on the ground and for there to be nothing underfoot to trip over when you are setting up your canopy.

  • s3 Nylon rope should be used to tie a tent pole to each corner of the tarp. 1 7 ft (2.1 m) tent pole should be placed in each corner with the tips of the poles in the grommets. To hold the tent poles in position, thread one end of a 10 ft (3.0 m) length of 0.25 in (6 mm) nylon rope through each grommet and around the tip of each tent pole, then tie it in a tight knot.

To hold the tent poles in position, thread one end of a 10 ft (3.0 m) length of 0.25 in (6 mm) nylon rope through each grommet and around the tip of each tent pole before tying it in a tight knot
  • During the process of attaching the canopy, keep everyone standing in the corners and hanging on to the poles
  • If you don’t have anybody else to assist you, you may do it alone, one pole at a time. You avoid the poles from falling over when you are stretching out the canopy, be sure to fully press them into the ground.
  • 5 Using tent stakes, extend the ropes from each corner and fix them in place with them. Grab each rope one at a time and stretch them out as far as you possibly can, straight away from the corners of the room. Using a tent stake, drive it into the ground in each location where the ends of the ropes are visible, then attach the ropes to the stakes.
  • Once the ropes have been tied in each corner, everyone may release go of the canopy, which should remain in place. If you are doing this by yourself, take care not to pull the ropes too tight, since this might cause the canopy to topple over.
  • Put one longer tent pole in the centre of the canopy and secure it to the ground using screws. One 8-foot (2.4-meter) tent pole should be positioned below the centre of the canopy so that the tip of the pole raises the middle of the canopy up. Secure the opposite end of the pole into the ground by pushing it down firmly.
  • A) The tension of the canopy will hold one end of the middle pole in place, and b) The ground will hold the other end of the middle pole in place
  • In order for rainwater to flow off of the sides of the canopy, it is necessary to lift the centre of the canopy somewhat using a longer pole. You may use some string lights to illuminate your canopy at night, which will make it more appealing.
  1. 1 Take the time to purchase a canvas drop cloth in the desired size with grommets in the corners. Make certain that it is large enough to cover the area that you like to shady. Make a note of the tarp’s dimensions in case you need to reference them later while drilling holes in the wall.
  • 1 A canvas drop cloth in the size you want with grommets in the corners should be purchased. It should be large enough to completely encircle the area you intend to shade. When you are drilling holes in the wall, make a note of the measurements of the tarp.
  • Secondly, drill two holes in the wall that are somewhat closer together than the length of one side of the drop cloth. Make the holes at least 1 ft (0.30 m) closer together than the distance between two grommets on one side of the drop cloth, and at least 7 ft (2.1 m) above the surface of the drop cloth. As a result, you’ll be able to make a peak in the canopy at the very end.
  • It’s important to use a drill bit that’s just a little bit smaller than the screw eyes or hooks you’ll be screwing in.
  • 3 Screw two screw eyes or hooks into the wall with a screwdriver. Metal screw eyes or hooks should be inserted into the holes you previously bored and tightened with a screwdriver. In order to keep the drop cloth attached to the wall, these will be utilized.
  • On one end of a screw eye is a metal loop with a screw in it. The metal screw eyes or hooks may be purchased at a hardware shop.
  • 4 Strong rope should be used to secure the drop cloth to the screw eyes or hooks. To attach the canopy to the wall, use a short piece of cord to connect the two corners together. Secure each grommet at one end of the cord with a knot, and the other end with a knot around the screw eyes or hooks.
  • Make an effort to secure the drop cloth as near to the wall as feasible.
  • 5 Tie a pole to each of the four corners of the house and drive the poles into the ground. Tie 1 tip of the tent poles to the grommets using 2 new 10 ft (3.0 m) pieces of strong cord, one end of which is threaded through the grommet and the other end which is wrapped around the points of the tent poles. Stretch out the canopy until it is tight, and firmly plant the other ends of the rods into the ground to secure it.
  • You may use aluminum tent poles, bamboo tent poles, or wooden tent poles to construct your structure. Make sure to keep the excess rope tied to the poles since you will be using it to fasten the canopy with tent pegs later on in the process.
  • 6 Extend the two ropes in the front and fasten them to tent pegs in the ground to secure the tent. Using your hands, pull the cords out from each corner as far as they will go, and then put tent stakes in the ground where they will reach the ground. To keep the canopy in place, tie the cable to the posts.
  • If possible, have someone hold the tent poles securely in place as you extend out and tighten the cords
  • This will ensure that the tent is not blown over.
  • If possible, have someone hold the tent poles securely in place as you extend out and attach the cords
  • This will ensure that the tent is not blown away.
  • Alternatively, if you do not want to create a peak, you can drill holes slightly higher than the holes for the poles you are using for the front of the canopy in order to create a slope
  • If you do not want to create a peak, you can drill holes for the backside of the canopy slightly higher than the holes for the front of the canopy in order to create a slope. Rainwater will be able to drain exactly as effectively as before.

A bit of history of canopy beds

Today’s canopy beds are used for their artistic and aesthetic qualities, however, as with many other things, this entire trend began as a result of a practical requirement. Some of you may be wondering what people could possibly use bed canopies for back in the day. There are two primary causes for this.

Canopies offered protection

Before the advent of modern roofing materials, many homes had thatch roofs, which were difficult to keep up with. Those who were unable to afford better living arrangements were forced to make do with less than ideal living circumstances. When the roof started to come apart, dead wasps, bugs, and even rodent droppings began to fall from the ceiling, creating a hazard for everyone within. The bed canopies were used to protect these items from falling on the bed and to keep the rest of the debris out of the room.

Canopies provided privacy and warmth

Other individuals started adding canopies to their beds for a variety of reasons, some of which were quite distinct from the ones mentioned above. Many of the affluent who lived in castles or mansions with a big number of servants had huge bedrooms, and it wasn’t just their owners that took use of this luxury, but also some of their staff. This was done for the sake of ease and for the sake of safety. In this particular instance, the bed canopies provided them with seclusion as well as with heat.

Bed canopies began to serve a decorative function during this time as people began to dress them up and make them appear more and more lovely and elegant.

Beautiful DIY Canopy Beds

Take a look at the photo gallery. There are several approaches that may be used to construct the canopy. To create the illusion of a canopy without having to worry about the structural elements, all you need is some chiffon fabric, wall hooks, and some clamps to completely modify your bedroom’s look. Locate the middle of the fabric and secure it using a clamp. Once you’ve decided where you want it to hang, hang the wall hooks in the appropriate locations.

Drape the cloth over the hooks, centered on the hooks. If you wish, you can enlist the assistance of a garland. Creating using KLC is a pretty straightforward project, however if you want further information, please visit their website.

A canopy for your favorite armchair

Take a look at the photo gallery. For a more realistic appearance, it would be preferable to mount the canopy to the ceiling rather than to a wall, as seen in the photo. On making-our-nest, there is a detailed account of the construction process. Even though the little canopy seen here was originally intended for an armchair, the concept is the same. A large embroidery hoop and netting are all you’ll need to make something similar. You’ll also need some ribbon, pom-pom trim, and twine to put it all together.

A hanging canopy made of fabric panels

Take a look at the photo gallery. It is sometimes easier to construct the structure than it is to construct the canopy itself. That has a lot to do with the style and design of your canopy bed, which you’ve picked yourself. For more information on how to construct a canopy out of fabric panels, see huntedinterior.com. As with any project, it’s crucial to be organized and have a clear picture in your mind of what you want the canopy to look like when it’s finished.

Bed canopy that also serves as a headboard

Take a look at the photo gallery. The canopy of this bed serves as both a headboard and a footboard. Design Sponge has a great tutorial on how to create a two-in-one headboard, so if you’re in need of a headboard, you should certainly check it out. Nothing about the project is overly difficult. Fabric, adjustable curtain rods, curtain brackets, and anchors are among the materials that will be required.

Hanging canopy using a repurposed ladder

Take a look at the photo gallery. When you’re making something helpful, repurposing and recycling may be enjoyable activities. Consider the following scenario: you want to make a canopy for your bed. A ladder is an example of something that might be repurposed in this manner. In addition, you’ll need some scrap wood and screws to construct the ladder’s support structures. If you’re interested in seeing how it would work out, have a look at the ladder canopy displayed on the website ChippingwithCharm.com.

Tree branches for a beach-themed décor

Take a look at the photo gallery. The use of a few tree branches to construct a support structure for the new bed canopy you’re about to construct is another option. Utilize a branch to suspend the canopy from the ceiling using chain, as well as two other branches to mold the canopy so that it frames a portion of the bed. I think it’s a pretty interesting design idea, and it would be especially appropriate for a coastal home or beach-themed bedroom décor. The bed canopy seen on Remodelista served as an inspiration for us.

Old lampshade turned into a flower canopy

Take a look at the photo gallery. When it comes to constructing a bed canopy, an old lampshade can only be of assistance. Moreover, it may be customized to have the appearance of a flower. That’s exactly what the instructional presented on skooksplayground teaches in its first section.

To make this project, you’ll need the following materials: an old lampshade, glue gun, green and pink felt, cable, a large paperclip, fabric, and a ceiling hook. If you want a different color scheme for your floral canopy, feel free to experiment with other options.

Simple fabric canopy with dowels

Take a look at the photo gallery. Take a look at the photo gallery. The DIY bed canopy that was shown on lifeannstyle is also quite nice. It’s both beautiful and simple to construct, and it gives a romantic touch to any area in the house. If you want to construct something similar, the most important materials you’ll need are two dowels and some cloth. First and foremost, you should choose a cloth that complements your own style. A light, airy cloth is more appropriate for this project.

Repurposed tablecloth and curtain rods

Take a look at the photo gallery. Instead of going out and purchasing new fabric for the bed canopy you’re about to construct, you could just recycle an existing tablecloth. If you follow the guide on vintageromancestyle, you won’t even have to sew a single thing! Take a thick ribbon and cut it into pieces to use as a sash. Glue them to the back of the tablecloth in the manner depicted. In order to get the desired effect, two curtain rods will need to be put on the ceiling. A symbolic canopy of sheer fabric

Take a look at the photo gallery. However, if you do not want a full canopy, you may just create something symbolic in its place. Not a great deal of equipment is required for this. You should be able to get started with just a few wooden dowels and some sheer cloth. Thumb tacks may be used to attach the canopy to the ceiling; but, if you like something more durable, screws and anchors can be used. You can even replace the dowels with pipes to give your canopy an industrial feel.

Tent-inspired canopy on three sides of the bed

Take a look at the photo gallery. In a manner, a canopy gives the impression that the bed is a tent. This may lead to some unique ideas and designs, such as the one you can see on theraggedwren. The concept proposed here is that you may use cloth to wrap around the bed on three sides, creating a pleasant, tent-like environment for sleeping. It’s something that the children would undoubtedly like. It’s similar to camping, but indoors and with more luxury.

If you want to create a wonderful atmosphere in your tent, string lights and sheer curtains are a must. Take a look atHandmadetalesfor some inspiration.

Freestanding pipe canopy

Take a look at the photo gallery. A canopy may be added to any type of bed, and it does not need to be attached to any of the walls or the ceiling in order to function. It can be a standalone construction that fits over the bed and can be added at any point in the future if necessary. The usage of PVC pipes and fittings is one of the most straightforward choices in this situation. These may be readily trimmed to fit in order to create a bespoke canopy frame for your needs. All of the details may be found on the website instructables.

Built-in canopy bed frame

Take a look at the photo gallery. Another option is to not only construct a canopy for your bed, but to also construct the entire bed frame from scratch. As a result, the canopy may be integrated into the frame rather than simply affixed to it or to the ceiling as a later addition to the structure. Modern canopy with sheer curtains

Take a look at the photo gallery. Bed canopies that are only ornamental do not need to be able to block out the sunshine or be constructed of a certain sort of cloth in order to be effective. Sheer curtains, such as those exhibited on craftedbythehunts, play a symbolic significance in a room’s design. In this particular instance, it is the canopy bed frame that sticks out and leaves the most lasting impact.

Wood ring canopy

Take a look at the photo gallery. Small, ornamental bed canopies, such as this one, are simple to construct and much easier to install. They may be hung straight from the ceiling and over the bed, and they don’t require a large or elaborate structure to be effective. It is possible to build this one out of a quilted ring and to hang it with a piece of rope. All of the project’s specifics may be found on the website burlapandblue.

These mattresses, which are often four-posters, have cloth draped over the top and over all four sides, and they are sometimes completed with tassels or other decorative features to provide a sense of drama.

What is a four-poster bed canopy called?

Lit à Colonnes (Colonnettes’ Lit) A canopy that matches the shape and size of the bed, whether with or without drapes, is required for the classic four-poster design.

Why did they use bed curtains?

There was a need for warmth and seclusion in shared rooms without central heating, which led to the invention of the canopy bed. When people lived in extremely basic quarters, it was not ordinary to hang a simple curtain across the length of a room to protect the bed from chilly drafts as well as to provide a visual separation between the living and sleeping areas.

Can you make a canopy bed frame?

In terms of bedroom furniture, canopy beds are distinguished by their tall bed posts with a top frame for hanging curtains or drapes.

They are the height of elegance and flair when it comes to bedroom furniture. You can build a canopy bed frame for a queen-sized bed with a little woodworking know-how.

About The Author

Just something about a covered play space inspires a child’s creativity and opens the door to their imagination. In addition to tents and canopies, you can also build forts out of sheets and rope, which are all inexpensive to build and make for great hideouts. However, if you’re looking for something a little more formal to display in your house, this canopy-style tent could be the perfect choice! When I saw this play home at CrateKids, I fell in love with it. However, I wanted to construct a smaller version in a more traditional color scheme so that it could hang in our living room without being too obvious.

If you want to go bigger, you can use any fabric and color combination that you like to make this project.

Materials: -drapes fabric (for the drapes) (6 yards for a large hula hoop, 4 yards for a small one) It’s estimated that I used 2 yards of cloth for the tent’s top (but I used spare fabric and am not sure how many yards I really used.) -hula hoop-velcro closure (heavy duty, non-adhesive type) Hang your tent from the ceiling using the hook provided (I used one ofthese banana hooksI had on hand.) -straight pins are used.

  1. -a pair of fabric scissors -fabric pencil (optional) (regular pencil will do) – border template (optional) -sewing machine (optional) Cost: The cost may vary based on the size of the hula hoop you use and the cloth you choose.
  2. First and foremost, you must understand what you are doing.
  3. A center seam will be required to join two of these parts together to form a smaller hula hoop.
  4. Check to see that the pattern matches up at the sewing seam.
  5. Repeat this process for the other side.
  6. They should be 8 inches broad, with a length equal to your hula hoop’s diameter plus one inch for hem allowance, and they should be 8 inches wide.
  7. Using the border pattern you printed and cut out in step two, trace it onto the length of cloth you cut out in the previous step.

The circumference of hula hoop rings varies, therefore I am unable to predict how many repeats of this pattern will fit down your fabric strip.

Place the two pieces of cloth together and cut out the zigzag pattern that you just sketched in the previous step.

Sew the two ends together to form a large circular shape.

Make both strips the exact same diameter as the first.

Sew along the pinned zigzagged edges, about 1/4 inch from the edge of the cloth, to complete step seven.

Step Nine: This will assist your cloth in laying more flat and avoid puckering throughout the following stage.

To get the peaks to stick out to their best capacity before ironing, you may need to use a pointed item.

When the sections are connected to the rest of the tent later, this procedure will prevent them from moving apart when they are connected.

The length of this is determined by the height of your ceiling as well as the length of the hook you choose to hang it from.

As you can see in the photo above, I started with a piece of cloth that was about 24 inches long and 2 inches broad.

The use of a safety pin will allow you to turn the tube right-side out.

Step Thirteen: After the tiny tube of cloth has been turned right-side out, iron it flat.

The size of your triangle is determined by the specifications of your hula hoop.

For symmetry purposes, I folded a triangle in half before cutting out the curve, and then I used that triangle as a template for the remainder of it.

Then repeat the process with the remaining four triangles.

Make careful to attach the tent hanger that you created in steps 11-13 before joining the two pieces together at the joints.

Step Sixteen: Using the hanging strip that was tucked snugly inside the tent top in step fifteen, pin the two parts of the tent top together as shown above.

Eighteenth Step:Place the hula hoop over the finished tent top and trim the edges to form a circle that is approximately 1 inch wider in diameter than the size of the finished tent top.

To do this, you must first collect the drapery fabric.

As I put them together, I was able to relax the gather to the precise circle of the zigzag border, which was a perfect fit.

Now that the draperies and border are joined, you may proceed to attach the tent top to the frame.

Then, using a sewing machine, sew them together to complete the project.

If this occurs, simply pin the border a little more inside the perimeter of the tent top, while remaining faithful to the circle of the tent top.

Check to see that they are pointing in the right direction, as indicated in the above illustration.

I sewed two velcro pieces onto the base of each triangle to ensure that there was plenty of reinforcement.

I opted to cover my hula hoop in white tape so that it would be less obvious from the inside of the tent, which you may have seen.

You may use any hook you choose, but I used a banana hook since it was something I had on hand and because it is long, it provided me with some additional length to allow the curtains to pool a little on the ground.

Due to the fact that my triangles were not quite long enough (I hadn’t figured out the math that I shared with you yet—I had been winging it), my tent top was only just big enough to reach around the perimeter of the hula hoop.

Perhaps yours will be a perfect fit if you follow the method exactly and cut your tent top to be slightly bigger in circumference than the hula hoop at step 17.

When making your tent top, remember to make it slightly larger than you need it.

Oops!

When it was simply a notion in my head, it appeared to be complex.

Yes, it is a little time consuming. However, if you are experienced with pattern sewing in any way, it will be really simple for you to create as well! Mandi Johnson is the author and photographer of this piece. Stella worked with photos from the Signature Collection to edit them.

20 DIY Canopies You Need To Make For Your Bedroom

Just something about a covered play area inspires a child’s creativity and opens the door to their potential. In addition to tents and canopies, you can also build forts out of sheets and rope, which are all inexpensive to build and make for excellent hiding places. Alternatively, if you’re looking for something a little more formal to display in your home, this canopy-style tent might be the perfect choice! CrateKids had a play home that I adored, but I wanted to make a smaller version in an older, more classic color scheme so that it could hang in our living room without being too obtrusive.

If you want to go bigger, you can use any fabric and color combination that you want to make this project with.

Hoops with Velcro are included (heavy duty, non-adhesive type) Hang your tent from the ceiling using the included hook (I used one ofthese banana hooksI had on hand.) pins that are straight -sewing scissors for fabrics -fabric pencil (also known as a fabric marker) (regular pencil will do) Templates for the borders are available here.

  • The velcro and the white fabric were already in my possession, but if I had purchased the white cotton fabric in addition to the striped jersey knit fabric, the total cost of this project would have been approximately $60 to complete.
  • Make two 2-yard sections out of the drapery yardage.
  • It is recommended that you connect three two-yard sections together at their sides to make a larger hoola hoop.
  • Then hem the bottom and sides of this now very large piece of fabric—but do not hem the top.
  • Creating the top of the tent’s border with two long pieces of cloth is step number two.
  • Fabric strips were created by stitching three lengths of cloth together rather than purchasing a large length of fabric and not using the entire width.
  • Make the template near to the previously traced one or further away from it if necessary to get a good fit with the previously traced one.

Simply trace it onto one piece of cloth and then stack the two strips together before cutting them out in the following section.

Finish by folding over and pinning each strip of zigzagged cloth together at the ends (see step five).

Before purchasing, ensure that it will fit around your hula hoop.

Lie the two zigzagged circles you just created face to face with each other (right sides facing each other) and pin them together along the zigzagged edge, as seen in the picture.

Once you’ve finished sewing the two sections together, trim the peaks of the zigzags as shown above, and make a small cut in the valley of the peaks, taking care not to cut into your stitching.

Flip the attached zigzag pieces right-side-out and iron the zigzag edges flat.

Step ten: Using a wide stitch approximately 1/4 inch from the open edge, sew the straight edge of these joined strips closed.

Create a strip of fabric from the fabric that will be used for the top of your tent (mine is white cotton) that will allow the tent to be hung with ceiling hooks in step eleven.

Consider creating it a little on the lengthy side so that you may cut it later if necessary.

Sixteenth step: Iron a strip of cloth in half lengthwise and sew it closed along its whole length, about 1/4 inch from its raw edges (see photo).

The use of a safety pin will allow you to turn the tube right-side-out.

Step Thirteen: After the fabric tube has been turned right-side out, iron it flat with a hot iron.

Hula hoop dimensions are used to determine the size of your triangle.

I started by folding a triangle in half before cutting off the curve to verify that it was symmetrical, and then I used that triangle as a template for the rest of the project.

After that, repeat the process with the remaining four triangles to complete the pattern.

Don’t forget to attach the tent hanger you built in steps 11-13 before joining the two sections together!

As demonstrated in step fifteen, pin the two sides of the tent top together in the manner depicted above while keeping your hanging strip tucked snugly within the tent.

Step Seventeen:Place the hula hoop over the completed tent top and cut the corners to form a circle that is approximately 1 inch wider in diameter than the hula hoop.

To achieve this, you must first gather the drapery cloth together.

As I pinned them together, I was able to relax the gather until it was exactly the circle of the zigzag border.

Now that your draperies and border are linked, you may proceed to attach the tent top to the top of the tent.

Finally, using the sewing machine, stitch them together.

Instead, pin the border a few inches inside the edge of the tent top, keeping the circular of the tent top as a guideline.

In order for them to work properly, they must be facing the correct direction, as indicated in the figure above.

Having additional people is always a plus!

I used a banana hook and heavy-duty glue to hang my tent from the ceiling.

While putting together my tent, I made a mistake that ended up working out OK.

The hula hoop was a little tight, as you can see, but it was still a close fit.

Getting the border and the tent top to fit together exactly without one piece being too big or too tiny for a decent fit is the other difficult component of this project.

This allows you some wriggle space, something I didn’t have when I created my tent top the first time.

“Pway tent,” as Lucy affectionately refers to it, is a creation of mine, and I must say that I’m rather pleased with it.

However, as I set down the procedures, I discovered how straightforward and simple the construction process truly is.

Yes, it is a little time-consuming. However, if you have any experience with pattern sewing, you will find it to be really simple to create as well. Mandi Johnson is the author and photographer for this piece. Signature Collection photographs were altered with Stella.
